Poltergeist is a good creepy movie. You have that eerie little girls and the weird little old lady to help with the creepiness.

Its sad but there really aren't to many good scary movies made anymore. The only movies that have ever really had parts that scared me were 1. Salems Lot (That boy scratching outside of the window) 2. The Exorcist 3 (The hospital scenes) and 3. A made for tv movie I belive, that was called the haunting (when nobody is home and the house is going freaking nuts). I have to agree though, that the scenes from hell and the video of what happened to the previous crew from the movie Event Horizon was pretty disturbing.

Dark Water directed by Hideo Nakata (director of ringu). This is one of my all time favorite japanese horror films. Very good stuff.

There are only 3 that I consider even CLOSE to being scary...

1) Jacob's Ladder
2) The Serpent and the Rainbow
3) Candyman

I didn't find The Ring the slightest bit frightening for some reason. I couldn't sleep the night following The Sixth Sense though.

You are weird. The sixth sense was about as scary as finding nemo.

Problem with "scary movies" now is they aren't really scary, they more to startle you.
That doesn't scare me.

Now older movies, exorcist, the shinning, etc. Those were scary.

Ive heard Event Horizon is definetly a great movie. Exorcist we've both scene. Amityville Horror isn't really that scary either, plus way to old. Final Destination is not scary at all, cool movie though. Stir of Echoes though, that might be a really good one. I think I saw that a long time ago as a kid, is that the one with the dude that hangs onto the bottom of the car while its moving to follow the people?

The Mothman Prophecies gave me the weebejeebies

Well, Pet Sematary scared me pretty good at the theater. But I was 19 at the time. It doesn't scare me as bad now, but then again, it's not new now. If I saw it for the first time tomorrow, it would probably still scare me. I was about to bolt the theater when I saw it the first time. So much dread...

Candyman is a scary movie. Lots of dark, claustrophobic settings in the ghetto as I recall.

Ringu scared my wife worse than me. She was doing like the backward crab walk over the couch, reeling in horror from our TV. Which only makes sense for that particularly scary scene.

What's so scary about Ringu? With the American version, at least they show the deformed faces of the dead, the Japanese version has nothing that can be remotely considered scary!

I think the sequel should be Cannibal Holocaust 2: Coalition of the Filling

Totally agree here (Like the remake of Living Dead better myself) with the exception of the last one. That movie is an abomination. (Pun intended.) Acting is horrid, special effects are dirt cheap, and the cinematography is just plain piss poor. That movie belongs on a WORST of list. The book, on the other hand, is really quite cool.

If that's the one where the machines try and kill people, I found it way more contrived than scary. Found myself going "This is SOO dumb" during a lot of it :disgust:

Session 9, with David Carusso. Yeah, that was a very trippy paranoia enducing movie. "I live... in the weak and the wounded."

Unless they did some impressive stuff in the extended version of that movie, Salem's Lot was one of the weakest horror movies I have ever seen! I read the book first, thought that was cool, but MAN was that movie bad! WTF was up with that blue master vampire?!

Uh, okay, no. GOD no!! HELL no!!!! That was one of the biggest wastes of 90 min of my life! That thing had the most abisimal, convoluted, idiotic story (if you could call it that) I have ever seen make it to film. Someone MUST have been smoking something to get that thing made. The third in the series is at least reasonably scary, the little, almost unkillable alien vs the marine squad. But the first was something I'd scape off the heel of my boot.

Okay, taste bashing done.

As for what I like, I'm with the crowd that likes the good psychological mindbender.
Alien is a fav.
The Thing is a wonderful thriller
remake of Night of the living Dead as the story is tighter, the makeup is better, and the ending just makes you go "Oh, Fvck!"
The Others. Probably the most recent classic-style horror movie. Builds wonderful tension and has great jump scenes.
the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre is good, though I've only seen it once. Wouldn't mind again.
Stir of Echoes and Session 9 are good for messing with the mind, too, the former more than the latter.

One that hasn't been mentioned is Silence of the Lambs. A bit more thriller than horror, but still strong on the creepy vibes. For the prequel, the remake of Manhunter, Red Dragon, is also a good part of that series. Leave Hannibal out of it, though. That's pure Hollywood splatter, not worthy of its brethren.
The Birds isn't too bad either, if you appreciate a movie that simmers. Anything Hitchcock is a good viewing, IMO. The original Psycho will make you rethink quiet rides in the country

I think that has to be one of the best scary movies to come out recently. Loved some of the shots of empty London. Great movie overall except for maybe the end.

Jacob's Ladder another good movie scary too.

Event Horizon is definitely in my list of scariest movies. I made the mistake of watching it once in a college dorm... over thanksgiving break. So not only was I the only person in our apartment, I was ALMOST the only person in the whole freakin building.

Stupid stupid stupid stupid idea. I must have nearly jumped out of my skin 17 times during the movie, as the movie itself is freaky enough but then little things out in the hall etc would make noise and I'd re-freak-out.

Edit: It is scary, no doubt about it - but to maximize the effect, you gotta watch it in a nice quiet empty house with all the lights off and the volume cranked up... because what happens is that the movie gets really really quiet...and you think something is going to happen... so you get all tensed up.... and then it doesn't happen.. so you relax... AND THEN IT HAPPENS!!! ARGGHGHHHHHH!

I don't understand why everyone is mentioning Event Horizon. It was a mediocre scifi flick that I didn't find the least bit scary. Maybe I'm just too old, who knows. If you want to go scifi, I would pick Pitch Black over that (or a classic like Alien).

Anyway, I've always been fond of a little known flick called The Hitcher.

Event Horizon wasn't so much scary as startling through the use of sound placement (as with most outta-seat jumping scenes).

I thought the The Ring had some really creepy scenes.

I thought Event Horizon was scary....when it first came out and I was 13. I now realize that it is a pretty bad movie. Yah though Pitch Black was cool.
