Yes, Mark Cuban could never have imagined his company being worth some tiny fraction of what it sold for. Here are the dynamics that came together at that time:

Back at that time (pre-Google), Yahoo was the most visited site on the internet. It was worth around $40 billion. The #2 most visited site on the internet was Lycos which was worth about $4 billion — so there was a 10x premium for being #1.

One month before Yahoo bought Broadcast . com, Lycos actually overtook Yahoo and became the #1 most visited site on the internet.

Yahoo saw this coming since Lycos was growing more quickly that Yahoo on a monthly basis. But when Lycos actually surpassed Yahoo, it put their valuation at a huge risk. Arguably if they stayed #2 then Lycos should have the 10x premium over Yahoo. This was the “dot com” era, baby.

Yahoo solved this the next month by buying Broadcast .com for $5.7 billion or approximately $10,000 (TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS) per “active monthly user.” There is hardly any justification that some person who watches a video stream on a site at least once per month would be worth even $10… Think about you watching a video on a website. An advertiser may pay 2 cents or maybe 20 cents to get a message to you… That’s about it. To say you’re worth $10 as a “user” on a free site is a stretch. To say YOU are worth $10,000 as a user on a free site defies all logic. Mind blown.

But the “eyeballs” put Yahoo back into the #1 spot and protected them from the prospect of losing $36 billion in market cap. So, Mark Cuban can thank Lycos for overtaking Yahoo, which meant that Yahoo was DESPERATE to get additional, eyeballs and he happened to have a basic company that could give Yahoo a monthly audience that was incremental. Nothing more. Yahoo closed it down soon afterwards and merged the “eyeballs” into Yahoo. That kept Yahoo at the top of the internet — until this thing called Google came along — but that’s a different story for a different time.

I am just curious to know if my @yahoo.com email will be dead or if everything, archives, contacts, etc will be moved the new system (if they go that way -- same for Yahoo Finance where I track my stocks) .. It would be a real pain to notify all the email newsletters of a change of email. Same for all the personal contacts.

I wouldn't even be slightly concerned about that. Modern data-mining Internet companies see active users as revenue. They wouldn't trash those accounts and email addresses.

Yea, it looks like they're relaunching, but I don't know the details. I don't really trust hosting provided by English speaking countries, but it probably doesn't matter. Regardless of how good *your* email is, the people you're writing to have gmail, yahoo, whatever...

I'd at least stay away from companies that use spying as their only way of making money. That way, the bulk of your mail at rest won't be used to profile you. That means paying for service in some form or another, or a business model that relies on some proportion of users paying(greater storage, advanced features...). If rock solid security/privacy is required, email is probably best avoided.

I use openmailbox as my primary mail, and I'm happy enough with it. It's a free service that relies on donations. I buy storage I don't really need to give support.
