Overstock has a few sets of the ADA885 speakers left. They are listed at $161, but use a $20 coupon and get them for $141 w/free shipping. These babies come with remote, have 120 watts of power, dolby digital, and are THX certified. Seems like a hot deal to me!

You can get the ProMedias at Outpost.com, just search for Klipsch, as it seems I can't figure out how to link. Also use ebates to get 5% off.

True, the Kipsch are nicer speakers. However, for starving college students or others on a budget where $100+ difference matters, jump on the Altecs...

ARGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! Where was this post a few weeks ago when I bought the 885s from Dell for $260?????? Damn it. BTW, they have many features the Klipsch ProMedias don't, such as a Dolby Digital decoder, a remote and a headphone jack. I could have bought the Klipsch ProMedias, but I went with the 885s instead, and they are really nice speakers. I think outpost.com sells the ProMedias.

I want to know how they can be Dolby Digital 5.1 speakers yet only have 4 channels... I've always wondered about that.

Well.... my order has been placed. $141 doesn't seem so bad, however it does say that they are "Factory Refurbished". WEll, 1year warranty and they better sound BADASS.. (I know they will!)

Thanks for the hotdeals!!!!

Lore: The use of a "phantom" center channel. Basically it tries to mimic a center channel using the left and right front speakers. It sucks compared to a real center channel, though.

Dolemite69, I don't think you will be disappointed, I like these speakers a lot.

Valkore, the phantom center actually sounds very convicing.

Exactly. A phantom center channel - so how is that true Dolby Digital 5.1? I thought DD5.1 specifications called for a center channel.

Outpost still sells the Klipsch promedia. It's a good deal through Outpost because of free shipping and add ebates and get 5% back. These speakers are the best bang for the buck. There is one other brand which supposedly sounds better but only marginally, and they cost about $400.00 more than the Klipsch(don't remember the name of the other brand...somehow "made in Austrailia" rings in my head). Imagine the shipping...ouch!

Don't get me wrong, if you're an audiophile, and have money, always go for "the best"... you'll never be disappointed with the best....ummm at least as long as something better doesn't come along(Caveat w/ disclaimer)

Still, myself an audiophile, I was astounded by the quality of sound reproduction the Klipsch Promedias achieved. Do yourself a favor and go take listen to these speakers before you throw away your money on $150 set of average speakers.

Well I got my Altec 885's in the mail yesterday! WOW.. these sound tight! Here's a question for anyone who has them.... How do you turn 'em off?!? Yea, I see the power button, but the LCD display stays on... Is that supposed to be like that?

Got my 885s yesterday also. These things are awesome!!!!!!!!! And yes, the LCD stays lit when powered off. Anyone still thinking about the Klipsch? Save yourself $100+ and get these. Plenty enough power to shake the walls, and crystal clear sound. Awesome!

Sorry, that's where you're wrong. I have had ADA880, ADA885, sold them for Klipsch ProMedia. The 880 and 885's rear does NOTHING!. It's weak and nothing comes out. As for sound quality, their sound is nice when you stack them up (ie take the speaker from the base in the back <fyi, that's why it sounds so weak> and stick it in the front). Even though it had a remote, and lCD Display. Get the ProMedias, it sounds VERY VERY VERY VERY GOOD. Much better then the ADA (excuse me) crap. But if you're trying to save money, you wouldn't get the 100$ speaker in the first place

I got my ADA885 today, and I'm pretty impressed when I hooked it up with my dvd-rom using the SPDIF connector. However, to my major disappointment, the sub has no bass. I have a Microsoft Digital System (2 speakers with a sub), and even its bass is stronger than the ADA885. Since the ADA885 is THX certified, I can only wonder if I got a defected unit because when I increase/decrease the bass around, it doesn't seem to make much of a difference. Am I the only one to experience this problem?

Sincerely,

Mikey2k

Hey mikey,
where did u order those speakers from? i was thinking about getting them from overstock.com..however i heard that dell had a lot of problems with the power supply on the subs of the ada885. i have the ada880 right now, and im thinking about replacing them with the 885s. dell says that the problem was fixed for speakers after may 8 2000, so your spekaers could possibly be the bad ones....let me know what happens..thanks,
sina
