RandomActz, I returned my ADA885 to overstock.com a week after I received them because of its problematic sub. Anyways, you never know what to expect from these refurbished speakers....

As far as recommendation, I've been looking for quality speakers for quite some time now, and here's what I found:

1. Klipsch Promedia: $250 at www.klipsch.com
comment: THX certified, 400 watts, your neighbor will hate you if you get this, great 4 point surround speakers but no AC-3/Dolby Digital.

2. Boston Acoustic 7500: $270 at www.cdw.com
comment: 4 identical flat panel speakers, very cool design, has built in AC-3/Dolby Digital decoder but it's 4.1 not 5.1, great for game/music/dvd

3. Midiland S4 8200: $293 at www.buy.com
comment: has an external AC-3 decoder, does 5.1 AC-3. Great for DVD but not gaming because it lacks 4 point surround support like EAX/A3D

4. Midiland S4 7100: $162 at www.buy.com
comment: step down from the S4 8200, has 4 point surround, but no ac-3 decoder, good speakers at that price.

I've actually listened and tested with these speakers and it just depends what your needs are.

a cheaper alternative might be the Cambridge Soundworks DTT2500. Check them out. Built-in decoder as well. You can get them for ~$165 if you look around.

whew..im glad my ada-885s from overstock.com only came with a missing volume knob...everything else seems to work fine for now.....i've had these for about 3 weeks now and they seem ok..warning, altec does not deal with these at all and they dont seem to honor the one year warranty. i asked them about my missing volume knob and they basically told me "too bad"

since you people have experince with speakers...

have any of you had an oppurtinity to listen to the Altec Lansing ACS-500s?

They were those two large tower units that sat on each end of your monitor... each tower had, I think 4-5 speakers in it.

I recall them selling for $500 when they were on the market.

If anyone has experience with them, please let me know... I have an oppurtunity to get a set for $100, but I don't know anything about them.

These ADA885's have got to be some of the worst speakers going. As noted, poor quality, incredibly weak subwoofers and overall marginal sound.

I too, had to replace my first set due to unexplained, random "crackling".
The second replacement set is not much better due to sub-woofer problems.

Regarding price, you might want to check out the Egghead auctions. I
got mine for a successful bid of $90.00 + about $35.00 shipping = $125.00

However, as noted I would not recommend these to anyone.
