alternative to winrar?

not looking to spend $35 on something that simply unpacks files, and all the newsbin copies have viruses

Just use the evaluation version. I don't think it ever forces you to buy the program. You just have to click "use evaluation version" every time it prompts you to pay for the software.

I bought winrar years and years ago, is it really $35 now? I don't think I paid anything near that for it. (I'd guess like $20?)

Nowadays I still use WInrar because I'm used to it, but 7-zip is just as good, I think.

If you just want to unpack, isn't the unpacker free?

I bought Winrar just because it's such a great piece of software.

I use 7zip also, but the user interface is a complete turnoff to me.

Not that this thread needs more input, but I'd recommend 7-zip as well.

Though if you can't get past the interface, peazip isn't too bad either. It's built from 7-zip's source.

7zip is not only free indefinitely without any kind of trial window popping up, but it both compresses and extracts faster than winrar on the same computer.
