The iPhone looks cool, it dropped in price. Neat.

But, I'm not really down with paying $200 + (24 months * $80/month) = $2120 over the lifetime of that phone. What are some Sprint alternatives? My company gets a 20% discount on Sprint service and I would like to utilize that with a nice phone. Features important to me would be ability to play music, use GPS, check Gmail, and use the "intarw3b". I plan on getting the 450 "simply everything" plan. I am also partial to Motorola products

You're describing the Moto Q.
Whatever you do, don't use an iPhone for any reason before you buy it- you'll be absolutely unable to use anything else afterwards. The Q would have been a fantastic smartphone exactly one year ago, but comparing its web browsing experience alone to the iPhones is like comparing Windows 3.1 to Mac OS X 10.5. Seriously.
Besides, you'll pay those kinds of data rates on a smartphone with internet, regardless.

The actual hardware of the iPhone is really nothing all that impressive IMHO. The thing that makes the iPhone superior to just about every other phone on the market (if you want to do more than just talk) is the OS/interface. No other phone even comes close IMHO.

Although the HTC Touch has a nice form factor, it still runs on Windows Mobile. Because of that there is really no difference between it and any other windows mobile phone out there (they all suck). Theres nothing revolutionary about the HTC Touch anyway, just a crappy interface that looks cool on the commerical but you'll chuck it after a week.

Disclaimer: I'm not an apple fanboy, I actually work at MS and enjoy bashing our own products.

You quote the iphone including the cost of the monthly contract...how much will your monthly sprint contract be?

Also, remember sprint is hemorrhaging money (they lost more $ than google made last quarter) and have a worse customer satisfaction rate than verizon (who seem to take sadistic pleasure in abusing their customers).

RIM has a new touch screen BlackBerry coming out code named "Thunder". It's exclusive to Verizon for now, but I guess it could come to Sprint eventually since they both use CDMA networks. Here's a picture of it (Link)

Well, I have about a month to make a decision. Our contract with Alltel expires mid-July. If iPhone was on another carrier, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. AT&T just seems like a rip.

If you're ok with Sprint be sure to try to get that SERO plan (employee rate plan, available for non-employees - see fatwallet) something like $30-$45 a month with unlimited data plan. You'll pay more than twice that anywhere else for a similar plan.

With my 20% employee, it would be ~$250 + (24 months * $56/month) = ~$1594

Thats pretty approximated, though.

Again.

Instinct.

Ok ok, so technically no other phone does come close. But one will. Very soon.

So the question is -- is an iphone worth $500 more? It seems not to you, and that's a totally legitimate decision. Just wanted to make sure you weren't making a lopsided comparison.

x2. I can't wait for this phone.

Or the Bold, but it's not a touchphone so you most likely wouldn't like it.

What do you mean "it's not a touchphone" the Instinct is all touch screen.

he was talking about the bold.

I saw a commercial for the Instinct before You Don't Mess With the Zohan this past weekend and I really wasn't impressed. It's more like a LG Voyager clone rather than anything comparing to the iPhone (which is more of a Smart Phone). Personally, I prefer my HTC phone.
