Alternatives to Nero Burning Rom

I just did a clean install of W7HP on my notebook and I am thinking twice about installing Nero (Too bloated and takes too long to install and installs CRAPWare along with it)

I mostly burn data DVDS & CDS with the occasional disc (DVD or CD) Image and even an audio CD once in a while

Is there a less bloated preferably free alternative out there

I took the time once to go through pretty much everything out there for this exact reason. I ultimately gave up because even though some of the alternatives seemed fine, they ultimately failed at some operations.
For example: some had the file gathering procedure (what you're going to burn) messed up, others couldn't burn audio CDs from MP3 files, etc.
Ultimately, I just install the Nero burner alone - without all the other media crap. The install is small and not bloated at all. Quite honestly, as long as you skip the media center functionality (and that agent crap), the other utilities don't take much space at all.

So ultimately, at least I am still on Nero.
Edit: Oh, and I also bought me a 1TB external 2.5" drive. I burn extremely rarely now...

Don't listen to that! ImgBurn makes it seem like it's rocket science to burn a DVD video or Video CD, let alone audio CDs. It is only good for ISO images and nothing else unless you are willing to take online courses.

I like you have tried to find an alternative to Nero and have used Ashampoo Burning Studio for a while which is a clean less bloated version of Nero kinda and they even have v6 as FREE. BUT the thing is, it lacks one feature which is a must for me..... the ability to author DVDs/VCDs from video files on your hard disk.

With Nero, once you create a DVD, all you have to do is drag/drop the video files into the burning window, and then Nero (using Nero Vision Express) will convert those files no matter what encoding theywere in into usable DVD files and do all the rest for you.

With that said I have installed Nero 9 but without installing Nero Rescue Agent, Soundtrax, Wave Editor, etc. I just leave Nero Burning ROM, Vision Express, and Nero Start Smart

I also use burnaware, very simple and best of all free.

Just be sure to uncheck the ask toolbar installation.
