i just started playing the expanision...i tried playing an online game but the game crashed

can OF and the original players play against each other online? i'm not sure how the online works in these standalone type expansions.

Yes they can. You can only play as the sides your game has, but you can play against any army.
They had a huge (1.5GB+) patch for the original which added the expansion units to play against, and AFAIK the expansion comes with the original's units so it should work.

I never had a chance to play this becuase my old pc couldn't handle the game, but I am tempted to give it a try(heard great things about it). I think I might have to pick this up considering the price.

I play this game when I am stressed out .... I go Axis (using a trainer cheat) using Terror Doctrine and set a pair of snipers holding their fire near the Allied base, then rain down about six V1 bombs on them. Talk about tearing up an offensive push !!
I'll actually play defensive after that, setting up dozens of bunkers, snipers, AT guns and mortar teams and then let the Allies try and break thru .. its my Maginot Line in micro scale !! Easily my favorite game right now, altho I've taken a break from it to plow thru CoD4.
