I've been reading several reviews about aluminum cases and have been thinking of getting on. I was wondering how easy it is to scratch them.

well..aluminum is a lot softer, so if, for example, you drop a screw driver on it, it'll most likely scratch. more likely to dent actually.

but then again...if you are careful, it'll last you a long time.

I take good care of my stuff. I'm just looking for someone who has one to tell me if they are any more easily damaged than a steel case.

I own a Lian Li PC 65 USB, which is of course aluminum. Although it's definately easier to scratch than normal steel cases, if you're careful with it I don't think you'll have any problems. I guess what I am trying to say here is don't be shyed away from buying one because of this.

Annodized Aluminum = harder than plain aluminum If I am correct, most Lian Li cases are clear or black annodized. Annodized aluminum is still not as tough as thick steel, but is pretty hard.

Yup. The Lian-Li cases (at least the PC6x series that I own) have the term "hard anodize" on the box they come in. I haven't noticeably dented or scratched my cases yet but I'm sure that they are not as tough as steel. But at the same time they're very sturdy for how incredibly light they are.

I have been debating getting an aluminum case, but the thought of all my beige/white drives in a nice looking silver case makes me cringe!
I wish someone would finally make aluminum drive bezels!
I saw a site where someone did it, but they arent in mass production or anything.

How about on the inside when you are installing components? I was thinking about using rubber washers on the screws for protection.

Huh? Why does it matter if you hurt the inside? I don't see that screws are going to do much damage.

Just use some metal polish if you get scratches. It can be polished like any other metal or aluminum can be.

This is way off topic, but I was thinking of attempting the case mod which replaces the drive covers with the original drive bay covers. However, has anyone had good results with just painting the covers?

Yes, but it is hard to find a paint that works well. I hear that Rust-Oleum "Brushed Aluminum" looks good, but I have not personally tried it. It would be best to do something like what they did at www.virtual-hideout.net

If you are planning on taking your computer to LAN parties don't get an aluminum case.

As far as scratching or fingerprints go, I have had my Lian Li PC70 for 5 months and there isn't a mark on it. Then again, I don't handle it very often.

It really depends on the alloy they used and how severly you scratch it. I have a plate of 7075 aluminum that's hard anodized. It's very hard to scratch unless I run a sharpened knife across. This 7075 type of aluminum is often used as a 1:10 scale car chassis because of its strength, memory, and light weight.

I also found out anodized aluminum is not conductive unless there's a scratch in it.

But if the Lian li uses a durable grade aluminum than it will be less prone to scratches. To me aluminum seems the most practical metal for cases with its heat dissipation and light weight. Too bad they are a bit expensive.

That can easily be fixed with a can of spraypaint - take a look at my Lian Li PC60 USB case.

I take my Lian Li PC60 to a lan party once a month. Every 2nd week or so, I take it to my friends house, about 20 miles away - my case doesn't have a scratch on it.

All the people (not exclusive to just this thread) who have complained about finger prints on Li-Li's need to learn how to wash their hands. I've had mine for quite some time now and I can't imagine making a finger print on it unless I'm eating something while handling the case.

I have been fidgetting with my lian pc-65 every day for a week and a half... other than a quick wipe with a cloth, no fingerpring issues. Hit it with some windex now & then if it's an issue (haven't had to do it yet, but it works great on aluminum and stainless steel). DON'T use windex on the plastic window though, use a plexiglass cleaner or you will damage it.

I even hauled mine around a couple times this week without covering, wrapping or boxing it and no marks on it.

Get your drives where you want em before you tighten the screws. The screws WILL leave marks in the case. Some fiber washers are not a bad idea, don't use them on the back side (where you won't see the marks anyways) and you will still ensure a good ground path. i wish i had done this when i built mine up.

The hard anodizing (vs color anodizing) is pretty tough. If you signifficantly scratch it, you would have scratched the paint on a normal case down to the metal anyways.at least you can buff the aluminum.

The lian li is surprisingly rigid, and there isn't really anything about it that ticks me off. Not many things in my life i can say THAT about !

Drive color : I tossed around on this a lot before buying... I actually like the way my beige drives look in the case. I have two CDRW's, a DVD and the breakout box from the Audigy Platinum filling all four 5.25 slots. It looks good like that, and even my friends who said the beige drives would look terrible admit they look decent.

I DO plan to paint the floppy bezel silver though, as it looks out of place. I was going to just remove it and plug it in when i need it (didn't use it in over a year anyways) but i'm going to attempt to spray it.
