Since correction of this bodes well for users considering this or any cooler, I thought it important to clear up a bit of misconception that seems to be running amok in this thread.

Believe some of the logic is failing when assuming that the word "heatsink" applies only to those devices touching an actual processor. As pointed out far earlier in this post, a heatsink is any device that aids in dissipating heat from any given source. In this case, the source which a few seem to be speaking of is the case itself, including the ambient air within said case. The cooling of case does in fact lead to the cooling of the ambient air surrounding all the components - even if only by a few degrees, or so. Is the temperature of the ambient air important? Of course it is. Any novice PC enthusiast has safely learned this truth. And those few degrees difference can be quite vital to a healthy system.

Case in point - Athlon Xp mobile processors. For the uninitiated, Athlon Xp chips are available in a wide variety of wattages (25W, 35W, etc), where the price of said processors is inversely proportional to the wattage. Belive the logic is apparant that there are certainly cost benefits of say the ability to operate a higher clock speed 35W processor in an original system with a lower clock speed 25W processor. Heat, however, becomes an issue of course. This is where all the "little" changes made in hopes of system wide temperature reduction come into play - using a very high quality thermal paste between the processor heatsink and the processor itself, constructing/modifying a "better" hsf than those typically included in preassembled laptops, modifying the laptop case to provide better airflow, and yes, use of a laptop cooler device made of a well conducting material (with or without the addition of fans included with said cooler device) to aid in dissipating (in this example, drawing away. which yes, is most always far better) away from the case thereby reducing the ambient air inside - again, if only by a few degrees.

In short, if design considerations are foregone, better conducting material based coolers will always function better than those made of lower conducting materials. I think that is the sage point a few have attempted to make.

Do hope this helps.

I think I'm going to give hardwarecooling.com a nasty resellerrating. Bait and switch: discount the product to $13.99 and send someone to sign-up at anandtech to sell the product. Once the ATers start buying, jack the price up to almost twice the amount. As soon as an ATer alerts us the deal is dead, their salesman comes back to alert us that it's been lowered again, but to $2.00 higher than before. Greedy.

Thank for the information. Again, deal is death and I hate them. We are not idiots. Currently $15.99+$7.00(shipping) is not hot.

We'll even at $15.99 I thought that it was worth a go! I ordered some other items to soften the $7.00 flat rate shipping.

My co-worker ordered this last week for this Dell Laptop and it got there so fast. He told me their CS is very good. They even called him on the phone to make sure everything was fine. I am planning on ordering one but does anyone how the plastic type notebook cooler compare to the aluminum notebook cooler? Is there any reviews out there?

Like I mentioned a few posts back, I have both and on my HP they both provide the same level of cooling. Maybe on a different laptop one will work better than the other. I like the plastic one better better because it is quieter and is pulls the air rather than blows it.

I dunno.. I'm kinda inspired o create my own, if not for the lack of a USB -> +5V adapter circuitry. My paramount concern is nose, as I'll be running a boatload of noisy equipment in my dorm, and I don't want to add to it with a laptop cooler... mine is loud enough as is, TYVM. I checked out passive coolers with the same performance as these activeones, only problem is, there are ~$60+. Maye I can make something with a Panflo or what not : /

At least I could cool myUSB 2.0 hub.. that thing gets really warm!

Consider this option: Use one of those USB personal fans and direct the air to the underside of your (slightly elevated)laptop. These little fans move a pretty good volume of air and are very quiet. I use one to move air over 6 external devices (2-HD, CDRW, Modem, 2-USB Hubs).

My $0.02 on the benefits of Aluminum vs. Plastic

...After reading this thread I decided to try one of my wife's stainless steel serving trays (e.g.) as a laptop cooler and it worked! I have a Dell Inspiron and it gets very hot when powered off A/C (too hot to place on my lap). Now I have no problem resting the serving tray with the laptop on my lap -- probably the steel acts as a heatsink to dissipate heat in the air beneath the laptop.

I thought about that, but those are pretty loud. And they wouldn't serve my needs... as is, I have 2 fans in a 'Net box [1/CPU 1/PS], 1 each in external USB 2 enclosures, 2 in my laptop, and 3 in my network switch.

I think I have found my answer: a heatsink/fan for the credit-card USB 2 hub, and a 80mmold fan I have from a 486. By hooking em up in serial and using a 12V adapter, the 80mm is inaudible, and the small fan that goes with the heatsink fo the USB hub as well. Wether this makes my laptop's fans turn off is a different issue.. I'd need heatpipes for that : )
