I picked up a few of these last month when they had a one day sale on them. Thay are black and have a removable plate so you can make any device removable. I use mine to swap between my tape drive, zip drive and a hard drive.

Shipping seemed reasonable sine UPS raised thier rates again last week.

A mobile rack comes in 2 parts, inner 3.5" caddy, and outter 5.25" body. The whole thing fits in the 5.25" bay, and the inner caddy is removable. Fits most standard size 3.5" HD. Google for mobile rack reviews for more details.

This looks like a great deal since Kingwin, Vantec, and other mobile rack brands usually sells for $25-$40 each.

First it showed $6.xx shipping, now it's showing $8 shipping to CA.
It doesn't add up correctly cuz 8 of them is showing $55... Which kills this deal for me.

What's wrong with 5.75 shipping to VA? I am in CA and it's actually 0.02 more. It's a 3 lb package and the shipping is probably what you would pay if you sent it by UPS yourself.

To send a USPS Priority package to me at 94588 from 90260 (PCLiquidators) is 6.05. They are charging 5.75. I've bought from these guys awhile back and their shipping was always very resonable, about what I would pay if I shipped myself.

Eight of these trays for me is also 55.92 shipped. 47.92 for the 8 trays and 8.00 shipping. Why would that kill the deal for you? The shipping weight for 8 is nearly 20 lbs.

pvt1580 Black ALUMINUM IDE Mobile Rack - Pullout Tray with Fan $5.99 x quantity of 8 = $47.92

T O T A L S
Sub Total $47.92

2nd Day Air $23.60 $71.52
Next Day Air $60.25 $108.17
US Priority Mail $14.65 $62.57

Just curious what you all use yours for? Why would you need 8?
I thought about having one with Win98 and old games.

It looked like $55 shipping + the cost of each bay drive. I'll go have a look and see if $55 is the total for the order shipped.

I don't necessarily need 8 of them. I was planning on grabbling 2 for each of my systems and few for some friends. I like leaving my HD's in the inner part. It would be nice if the sold the inner compartments separately because I only need one swappable for each rig.

so does this include every thing I need or is it just the inside or outside. Also, since I have 2 HDDs I'd like to switch out with each other, do I need to buy 2 of these or could I just pull out the caddy, take the 1st hdd out of the caddy, put the 2nd hdd in, and slide it back in?

Thanks, I'm in for 2. I wanna finally try a Linux OS and plus I wanna install Server 2003 on various drives and swap them in and out.

Any opinions on pros and cons of doing this versus just dual-booting?

Using these trays means you can format your HD without fear of screwing something up. They're also great for doing a backup mirror if you have a RAID controller prior to doing something like installing dual booting. All in all, this is a great way to rapidly do several interesting things easily. Just make sure you have the right drive in the PC before doing anything.

thanks got a pair. my dad actually used this way back when they first came out in the early 90s, after a while got a lot of general failure errors, I don't think he dropped them but apparently there were some issues with having to 'park' the hdd first before removing. i think modern laptop hdd park automatically, anyone know if desktop hdd do this also??

edit:

found parking here

So I guess don't try hotswapping with this, wait for shutdown poweroff before removing the tray unless you manually park it first.

Wish they made a SATA version for this cheap I ordered one for the 300GB IDE drive I just picked up that is in my Dell SC420 media box. The drive runs hot so hopefully the fan might provide a little more cooling. It will be really nice to be able to pull my media drive out (300) for easy transport or lock up.

Just have to remember that these are NOT hot-swappable.... shut down, wait a minute for the drive to stop spinning, then swap...

Not that this kills the deal, just a basic limitation of the equipment. Nice price for anybody who wants 'em...

I was told today by someone that there was some software written for IDE drives to allow you to pull the drive out and initialize another drive without having to shut the system down. has anyone heard of this? it would make life great if it exists!

What are advantages of using this with two drives, one w/ Win98 and other with WinXP, vs. dual booting? Besides the fact of having to have two drives of course.
I want to do one or the other, to be able to play my older games that have problems on XP.

I already have 10 beige ones that I use regularly for swapping file sysyems and stuff. However, I have to admit, I use one for storing screws and extra various crap in my case, than for anything else. Btw I thought this was kinda funny:

Shock:

* W/out a device: 50G or less
* W/a device: the device decides

Be carefull with cheap trays like these. I had about 8 similar devices go bad. The fans in them were *horrible* quality -- after a few months they begin to warble and make your entire system unstable as they draw lots of current (or are fans voltage driven? I dont recall)
