I find it really difficult getting up in the morning even though I get hours of sleep. I get at least 7 or 8 hours daily.

I work out in the evening (currently p90x / insanity hybrid) eat 3 meals a day with a shake and snack that are relatively healthy, no processed foods except a cliff bar and usually only drink /go out on the weekends. Is something wrong with me? I'm tired as heck right now at work and could totally go back to bed!

P90x and insanity are pretty tough. Maybe your body needs more rest right now to help recover.

Or, you're just someone that needs more than 8 hours a day.

Maybe you have sleep apnea, and you are waking up many times throughout the night but simpy can't remember it.

Does that tiredness go away later in the day? There are literally dozens of conditions that might be at the root of this. I would get a blood work done through my physician if I were you. There are a number of things that could cause this.

In the weekends, when you can sleep in, do you still feel tired after you wake up?

This. When this happened to me, I learned I had hypothyroidism.

Exercising before bed revs up your sympathetic nervous system (SNS) for quite some time afterward, especially with high intensity programs. The SNS is responsible for your fight or flight response and will keep you awake. I had the same trouble going to sleep when I did BJJ at night before bed. Had the same problem with gym workouts. I try not to exercise within 2 hours of going to sleep, which results in me usually trying to get a workout in during my lunch hour or right after work. Try that out - it will likely help.

When you have a rest day, do you get the same tiredness feeling the next day? If not, you could be over-training or just need more sleep as a result of training so hard.

Yeah, they have blood tests & stuff:

http://thyroid.about.com/od/gettestedanddiagnosed/a/testdiagnose.htm

Could be thyroid, could be sleep apnea, could be food allergies. I'm in the latter category - I was always tired my whole life, no matter how much I slept, and I was always groggy in the morning. Root cause was a gluten allergy. Feel great now!

Are you overweight? Sleep apnea usually only exists if you are overweight. Thyroid problems usually have other symptoms too:

What time do you usually go to sleep, and what is your diet like?

I'm normally in bed by 11 and up by 7:30/8. i'm in good shape ( half way through p90x/insanity hybrid after completing p90x and insanity within the last year) about 165 lbs 5'8". Diet... this week I ate at least 3 square meals a day, which normally consists of a muffin with scrambled eggs and cheese that i make myself on the weekends to heat up during the week, lunch was tuna salad with salad and a clif bar to supplement, and dinner was mostly whole roasted chicken with veggies and rice, also what i cooked on sunday for the week. ill also eat a clif bar at work and and a protein shake after my workout and before my dinner. tonight will probably be either lamb or fish because im sick of chicken for a while haha. i normally drink on the weekends, sometimes heavily like last weekend where i had out of town friends visit, but normally just split a bottle of wine on one evening and have a few beers the next.

but now that i think of it, I didnt get as much sleep as i normally do this week. I had to wake up at 3AM on monday to go to work at 4AM and that may have screwed up my week in addition to the fact that i was out till 4AM the saturday before. that's something i haven't done in years. I could used to do that all the time and not be tired, maybe i'm getting old now

Today i didn't go to work and i slept in till about 830, i don't feel tired at all, so i dont know, is it in my head? am i whining or do i have a real problem... not sure. maybe i just need more sleep and need more time to recover especially if i'm out really really late.

As far as sleep goes, when do you usually get tired? My sleep window is around 8:30pm - you know, that time at night when you start getting sleepy but push it off to finish the TV show or keep surfing the net

Anyway, I've found that if I'm in bed when my sleep window rolls around, I can asleep pretty easily & feel great the next day. So listening to your body's clock is a biggie if you're having struggles with being tired. Downside is I hate going to bed early! Haha.

If you feel fine after 9-10 hours of sleep on the weekends, then it's possibly that might just be your natural sleep requirement (there's a good bit of inter-individual variability on that).

Or, as others have suggested, it could be a sleep disorder--apnea, periodic limb movement disorder, etc. A sleep study is the best way to get that checked out.

If you currently have a bed mate (or have had one in the past), you could ask them if your arms/legs twitch or if you snore loudly/choke/sound like you're gasping for air while you're sleeping. The could clue you in that you might want to have a sleep study done.

I have a similar issue and I don't know if it's normal or not. I am 31 now, but almost as long as I can remember myself I need at least 10 hours of sleep to feel fine during an average day. If I get anything less than this 10 hours, I feel like crap, and I only really "wake up" around 11am. That's the time when I want to have breakfast or do anything productive - NOT before. This always creates a problem in school, when the administration doesn't give a damn that I cannot process information at 9am. So basically classes are a waste, and all the actual learning happens at home after work or during night, which results in me being even more tired during the morning.

Funny thing is, even if I go to sleep at 9pm, and I have to wake up at 7am, I STILL feel like crap, unless I can sleep till 10-11am.
