Am I a close-minded bigot?

I am an analytical thinker and I'm directed by facts, not emotion. I tend to think of things based upon their logic, and debate based upon the facts as they are presented to me. However, I've gotten into disagreements with a couple of people here lately that gave me this label. Is it possible to disagree with someone without being a bigot?
*Edit: threads in question below*
There are a couple of long reads:

Here and here

Reader's digest condensed version:

Do we need an explicitly gay comic hero? My answer: No

15 year-old performs oral sex on a school bus - right or wrong? My answer: Wrong

Don't worry Rebel.....these days people quickly label you a bigot or a racist simply because they don't want to hear any comments contrary to what they beleive, regardless of the facts.

i "believe" that emotions are a fact, and so are opinions, and both of you are controlled by your emotions to state your opinions...

what is a bigot?

One who is strongly partial to one's own group, religion, race, or politics and is intolerant of those who differ.

[French, from Old French.]
Word History: Bigots may have more in common with God than one might think. Legend has it that Rollo, the first duke of Normandy, refused to kiss the foot of the French king Charles III, uttering the phrase bi got, his borrowing of the assumed Old English equivalent of our expression by God. Although this story is almost surely apocryphal, it is true that bigot was used by the French as a term of abuse for the Normans, but not in a religious sense. Later, however, the word, or very possibly a homonym, was used abusively in French for the Beguines, members of a Roman Catholic lay sisterhood. From the 15th century on Old French bigot meant ?an excessively devoted or hypocritical person.? Bigot is first recorded in English in 1598 with the sense ?a superstitious hypocrite.?

hmmm, i think most people are bigots in some respect

look at the "politics" part, there are a bunch of liberals and a bunch of conservatives that are "strongly partial to one's own group" and intolerant of people that don't share their political views

religious bigotry is definetly alive and well in the US, people might be shy of commenting on people's race/ethnicity, but they won't hesitate to bad mouth non-mainstream religions

If you beleive that emotions and opinions are "facts" then you are either female...or an idiot.

I agree 100%. I have been around for 36 years and the only time I have ever been called a racist or bigot is when I posted to this forum.

You could dislike/disapprove someone's action or lifestyle without being a bigot.
I didn't see where you spout off hatred. We can't like or approve of everything
and everyone's actions. Everybody dislikes or disapprove of something or someone,
but that doesn't make them a bigot.

I don't care about my 'rep' on ATOT. But a convincing argument presented that says I'm a bigot would cause me to reconsider my position in the future. Consider it an attempt at "self-help", or confirmation that I'm not doing anything wrong.

I already know your opinion which has in part prompted this thread.

Oh, a sexist to, let's add that to the list... a close minded bigot and a sexist... got more?

I am an analytical thinker and I'm directed by facts, not emotion. I tend to think of things based upon their logic, and debate based upon the facts as they are presented to me.

Almost everyone believes themselves to be analytical and logical. The problem is most people have no logic training (essentially relying on common sense; which is a function of experience). They depend heavily on their worldview which they rarely challenge. To borrow from Thomas Gilovich common offenses include:

Misperception and Misinterpretation of Random Data
Misinterpretation of Incomplete and Unrepresentative Data
Biased Evaluation of Ambiguous and Inconsistent Data (real bad at ATOT)
Motivational Determinants of Belief
Biasing Effects of Secondhand Information
Exaggerated Impressions of Social Support

In sum, the pitfalls of analysis (particularly human logic) are abundant. It is only those constantly willing to challenge closely held beliefs (by seeking credible contradictory information) instead of rallying to expressions consistent with previously held notions that have a fighting chance. Everybody has committed the sin. The question is whether you honestly persue redemption. If not, then you just might be a close-minded bigot. Granted, the odds are high that your accuser may fit the profile as well.

You're mixing up your targets here, SnapIT. Just sort of slinging it in any direction this morning, aren't you?

yes, yes you are.

example of boonerebel logic.

(some)homosexuals have a high rate of hiv infection. therefore (all)homosexuality is bad!!

lets universalize this.

(some)black people have a high rate of hiv infection. therefore (all)black people are bad!!

this is why you get called irrational. your arguements hold no water. if your arguements hold no water and you continue to groundlessly pound away, you are a bigot.

Bigot
Based on the definitions there, would you dispute that no one can possibly NOT be a bigot in some way?

As for analytical thinking, facts and not emotion, I disagree, but as BaliBabyDoc points out "the odds are high that your accuser may fit the profile as well."

You trying to universalize this is what I would call irrational. Fish swim in water. They can breathe in water. I swim in water. Therefore I breathe in water. You are making jumps that defy logic. I simply stated that homosexuals have a higher mortality rate than heterosexuals. How can you go from that to saying that blacks are bad? It's these sort of (il)logical arguments that I take objection to.

that doesn't really fit the definition of a bigot

check the definition i posted up above

the two key points that make a bigot are
1- being strongly partial to a group
2- being intolerant of those outside the group

if boone is strongly partial to non-homosexuals AND
is intolerant of homosexuals

then i think he would fit the definition of a bigot, at least in regard to this group/area -> sexual orientation

"Regardless of whether they are equal or not (OK, I'll go along with "All men are created equal"): Do they need their own comicbook? What's next, a cartoon for three-toed exhibitionist underwater basketweaving serial killers?"

"I think gays are an aberration. Does that make me a bigot? Whether it's a choice or genetic, it's a harmful, high-risk life. It's certainly not a healthy lifestyle, why does everyone feel the need to publicly recognize gays?"

"Whether a serial-killer murders by choice or by genetic abnormality, I think that they're harmful to the human race. The same can be said for gays. So, yes, there is a parallel."

"It's harmful because society as a whole shuns the 'lifestyle', so a homosexual 'partnership' that manages to adopt or otherwise locate a child to rear is only leading that child into a lifetime of abuse. I think it's repulsive because anal sex is unnatural."

"Trying to defend homosexuality as a distinctive trait like blue eyes is ludicrous."

"Despite Moonbeam's apparent feelings to the contrary, no matter how hard you try you are not going to make any babies that way."

"Moonbeam's take is that it is a positive influence on society and I say it's negative, more so than cancer, mental illness, or any other disease. A 100% homosexual society has a 100% mortality rate and will die out within one generation. How can you consider that to be healthy?"

I think you are closeminded and scary when it comes to this issue in general. I don't know if the term bigot works but I do know far too many people throw it around, including yourself when you decided to call moonbeam a bigot against heterosexuals admitting that he must hate himself.

Oh well, keep the hate.
