Blinks are always used. You never know who is in your blind spot. I have worked several jobs that are driving intense. Saved my ass plenty of times. I also worked a radius of stamford, ct and nyc so I saw more wreckless driving in one day than most will in months.

Point is.. it will save your life one day.

I lived in the NYC and now in Boston. NYC driving is easier than Boston.

For clarification, I don't recommend people do what I do. I am always 100% aware of my surroundings when I'm driving (this is a benefit and a side effect of always driving faster than everyone else around you... they become part of your rear view mirror so your blind spots don't become much of an issue). When I'm not (like I'm on the phone or something), I stay right and stay in traffic.

Also, if you do not drive a fast or properly handling car, you can not drive like this either. You will get yourself in trouble if you can't keep pace or pass with ease.

I wouldn't say you're an a-hole as much as you are highly irritating. Blinkers aren't just a courtesy, they're for keeping people around you aware of what you're doing. Even people who are three hundred yards away.
In addition to what everyone has said about blind spots and letting it become habit, some cops can get downright anal about that sort of thing, especially if they're bored and you do it right in front of them.

If there is another car on the road that is in your field of vision, you should use the blinker while changing lanes. I don't particularly agree with those who say you should use them at 3 AM on country roads, but there's really no reason not to either. If you're "too tired" or "wasting energy" moving your pinky that far, you shouldn't be driving at that time of night.

People who don't signal makes it harder for those to keep track of where you are and where you plan on going. Like some other posters here, I like to keep a mental graph of where cars are around me and when someone makes their way into my lane without signaling, it's like they are trying to be covert or secret about it.

Whenever I see someone change lanes without signaling, I always call him a jackass or asshole in my mind. Every time. Am I a jerk?

One thing I absolutely HATE is when people come on a highway come up to a point where their lane ends and merges over and they just shift over without a blinker or even looking.

This is the most unbelievably annoying thing I encounter on the highway. Holy shit, it's like people think they're entitled to merge just because their acceleration lane ended; no looking over, no blinker, just mosey on into the right lane of the highway, and cause a massive slowdown for everyone else.

Fuck them. They need to be pulled over. Fuck having state troopers monitoring people's speeds. They need to do figure 8s on and off highway ramps and just pull over people who can't fucking merge decently.

And to that effect, have people forgotten what an acceleration ramp fucking IS? Bitches are merging on the highway at 40 miles an hour in their Camrys. AHH.

This topic makes me mad.

Yes. You ALWAYS use your blinker. I don't care if it's 3am, and you're the only one on the road. You use the blinker. It needs to become routine, so you don't have to think about it, or ever forget. You change direction, you use your blinker EVERY TIME.

This is my counterpoint... If you get in the habit of always indicating no matter what, (some) people (like my mother) will blink for a couple seconds and move over without looking. By not making become only a habit you make sure that it's at the front of your thoughts when you change lanes. You have to make a conscious decision to indicate, have a look around, then change


And no, I haven't forgotten to use my blinker when I'm in a situation I need to. If you have to practice and practice it every time solely to make sure you don't forget, then that's fine, but others have better memory
