prom is no big deal. what matters is having a good time with good friends. it's just another event.
if you were to go to prom with someone you didn't know or like, it would be just as dismal as going to any other event with them. it's not like a rite of passage or anything.

there are countless other things you can enjoy with friends or on a date. btw i did go.

Geeks that say they'd rather go to lan parties or play starcraft then hook up with hot chicks (regardless of their IQ) are the kinds of geeks that make the rest of us look bad.

I rented a hotel room for after prom and jam packed the fridge with alcohol of all shapes, sizes and colors. My friends and I had plenty of hotties in the room and we all had a blast.

im not gonna make fun of the op, but that sucks....

im a senior in high school right now, and can honestly say that high school is where i have the most fun, just being loud and obnoxious in the hallways...

prom was the topper, going in there after pre-gamin it for about a half an hour, dancing with my gf and a bunch of other girls for 4 hours, then heading down the shore to get completely ripped, get into fights, and do whatever a guy and a girl do....

all i can say if there is still time for you to go, there is always that one girl who doesnt have a date, grab your balls and ask her

That's is definitely argueable

If you've have money to burn on some snotty biatch.

It's simply not important to me and never was. The crappy immature additude of high schoolers never appealed to me. I already screwed around with the schools network a bit too much amoung other things...

Prom is just a fluf event to make people burn there money and make people think they need to do these useless customs.

Guess what I didn't goto prom, I hang out with my friends when I am not working. I am going to college just like everyone else.

I didn't go and I'm not sorry and I'll tell you why.

There would have been LOTS more people there that I couldn't stand that people that I liked being around
I don't dance, nor do I want to.
I don't enjoy getting dressed up for a night out.
They don't play the type of music I enjoy at events like that... they play the type of music I don't like.

If you don't want to go because you don't want to then don't. But if you want to go but don't because you don't have a date or you're shy or whatever, you'll regret not going.

Dude,

Only you decide if your a loser or not.

Do what feels right for you. I didn't go and I have no regrets whatsoever. I believe the reason for that is cuz I did what I wanted which was not go.

Ok biggest question. Why is prom such a big thing in america. From the look of movies it seems pretty pointless. I dont even understand why americans hold graduation so much dear to their hearts. I didnt go to my high school, undergrad graduation ceremony and I went to my grad school graduation ceremony only after my advisor threatened me that otherwise I wont probably be able to graduate that semmester.

In my experience I have seen people suddenly change attitude when they are nearing graduation and even worse afterwards. Whereas they are just going from being a simple ass to an asshole.

My advice to the OP is that stop feeling bad for yourself grow-up and take control of yourself and your emotions and as far as the money goes never blame your parents for it. You are more capable than you know.

It's simple, just like most decisions in life.....

If you want to go, then go. If you don't, then don't. Will you be a loser for not going? Only in the minds of the mindless drones that wouldn't dare NOT go, because then someone else whose opinion they crave would think they're the loser.

It's all about what's right for you, without breaking any major laws. If you're truly an original, instead of a high school clone (like most of the people that are calling you a loser for saying you don't want to go), don't bother with the tux. Be original, go in a nice shirt and pants, and have fun. Or don't. 25 years later, it won't matter in even the tiniest little bit. If you go, do it for yourself, not for others. If you don't go, it's for the same reason. Either way, it's what's right for you, and what will make you happiest, that's more important than following the crowd.

Besides, you'll be hundreds of dollars (or your parents will be) richer if you don't follow the crowd, right?

Remember, anyone can be a clone. But there's only a few originals left out there.

Not gonna even comment on the fact that they say it sucks or whatever. I feel bad for the kids i saw at my prom last month that we're just sitting there, with that look on their face where they wished someone had a 12-guage so they could /themselves. Personally, i was so opposed to the idea of prom, and i turned down quite a few girls, not to brag, just i was really opposed to going. Then my friend came over, and we talked for a while, and i figured that i didn't have anything to lose.

I didn't want to regret it and wonder how much fun it could have been. I went, and had the best time of my life. But i guess i'm not the anti-social like it seems quite a few people on here are. I guess i float around with different groups -->stoners, preps, emo, g-units lol, hicks, and bunners and whatnot. It's not a matter of being cool or fitting in. It's all about being together with your buddies and having a blast. We had a lotta 1/5s and other mixes so by the time dinner got around it was getting kinda rowdy. Limo driver had to help me into the restaurant and i couldn't pick my head up off the table, lol. Made myself throw up 9 times to get all that vodka outta me. I looked like i got hit by a train. But when i got to the dance it was amazing. They played hella techno music, and i was just flying everywhere. Everyone was having an awesome time, and then we got pics, and just shot the breeze for a while. Hell i thought it was fun.

Then the limo took us up top of the city and we chilled and then he took us to the party and we partied till 5 the next morning. Threw a mad hicktown party, lol.

I'm sure y'all will think i'm an idiot, but i didn't regret it at all, and you'll always make more money, but personally, i'd rather have a great memory than a little money.

At least give it a shot. If you hate it, just become a hermit, and never go outside ever again.

know what man, i wanted to hate on you, but i can't

prom was hella fun for me as well, not when i went as a soph with some random girl, but the 2 years after that were a blast. it's one of those nights in high school where you can really let loose, have a good time, and have pictures to remember it by.

unlike all those other times when you smoked weed, went down on someone, and couldn't remember if it was a guy or a girl.

not that that's ever happened to me or anything

...

I enjoyed going to my HS prom. Went with a good friend and had dinner at McD drive-thru because we had to meet a group at the prom by a certain time. I really dont remember what happened after the dance, for some reason.

People do these "useless customs" because it's fun and, you know, people enjoy fun. You're extremely bitter, it seems. My guess is that you were rejected for a date, which is why you're trying to justify skipping out.

I went and enjoyed it. Some unique events happened at my prom which I will never forget. Most of the people who are hating the prom here are the ones who probably were turned down by several girls or tried to go against the crowd and refused to go. Like the rest of school, there will be memories made at the prom that people will talk about for the rest of your life. I've been out of school for 8-9 years and every time I talk to a former classmate, prom and the graduation parties get mentioned more than anything. My prom cost me about $120-200 total as I went to a cheaper, yet nicer food establishment and I got a deal on my tux. The original question was probably a bad idea asking here in an environment of people who take technology and their ego above real world experiences.
