Am I an Alcoholic

Hi all,

I recently went through my "routine" and started wondering do other people do this? Is it right? Anyways, here I go.

I didn't drink much before age 21, before then, when I tried alcohol, I didn't think much of it, and wondered what all the fuss was about. When I turned 21, I started drinking a little bit not much really.

Throughout my 20's I started drinking more during the final days of college, then I got a job and the drinking went down a little, but as my career has progressed, I've been in social situations with work more and more often where I go out with clients or visiting co-workers and it's expected to have a couple drinks. I've always done fine here, and never gotten drunk or embarresed myself, I don't worry about that, I've probably driven myself home slightly drunk, but never anything major.

However, my job has become more and more stressful during the last couple years (it turns out that the higher up you go, the more money you make, the more stress you have, the more you worry, etc...)

Anyways, my drinking has always been pretty "normal" I'd drink mixed drinks and beer, jack and coke, bloody marys, etc... But, recently, I discovered Martinis, and the more I drink them, the more I realize, I'm drinking for the buzz and slight numb feeling I get when I drink. Martinis get me there faster.

Let's cut to the last few months. Just about everyday at work has been stressful, sometimes in my situation, not to be egotistical, but I feel like Atlas carrying the earth on him back. Around 3:30 - 4:00 at work, I'm sittiing at my desk, working on the computer, and I start to crave a martini.

So I get home every night anywhere from 5:00 to 7:00 (sometimes later) and go almost straight to the liquer cabinet to start making a martini. Sometomes I don't even take my coat off before I grab the gin bottle. I've had one martini plus 1-3 beers every night for the last 3-4 months. I don't drink till i'm really drink, but I quit after I get a good buzz on.

I can't go on any longer, I have a show to watch, but do I have a problem? Is this normal?

If you find you can't make it through the day without a drink, as you described above, you may want to seek out help, either professionally or maybe an AA meeting.

Edit: When I said AA, I meant that maybe you could find some kind of support group, not necessarily AA.

I don't think that makes you an alcoholic. You might be consuming more alcohol at this time than is healthy, but that doesn't equal alcoholism.

That said, I have a glass or two of wine most nights. I don't have any other vices, and my life is pretty good, so I see regular alcohol consumption as fairly reasonable.

I'm not sure if I would call you an alcoholic yet but the above isn't a good sign.

Personally I prefer the gym for regular stress relief and it's better for me.

I would say it could be the start of a problem. Having drinks every now and then to unwind is normal but with how much you say your drinking every night and that it's been that way for the past 3-4 months seems excessive. Are there other ways that you can dissipate this stress such as other hobbies?

Yeah, I can't really get to the gym and my work is pretty physical to begin with (teaching little kids, there is no sitting still!!!) and my REAL addiction is hot bubble baths every night. Without them, I would be a raging maniac.

A healthy stress relief alternative would be worth checking into!

Don't expect sympathy here, just a warning.......

I didn't catch that part. Don't do that. It isn't worth the potential consequences.

Based on the OP's description of his job being chained to his desk, like myself, I thought it a reasonable suggestion. Whatever works.

Keeps me from getting fat as an added bonus.

Can you make it several days without a drink? If the answer is yes then you are not an alcoholic but this may be the beginning of a future problem. I like to have a few beers or a drink or 2 after work every day but I rarely think about booze while at work.

Change up your routine a little, maybe take a 15 minute break mid afternoon and talk a walk around the office building and relax a bit.

A pattern like that is a classic sign of alcoholism. try not drinking at all for a while, as suggested above. See how that goes and report back.

He's an alcoholic. He starts CRAVING for the martinis while at work. Grabbing the bottle the minute he steps in the door is also another bad sign.

Jadow, get some help and do it soon.

You're an alcoholic. You've identified the problem and I think you know what you need to do. Cut it out, entirely, forever. As others have suggested, find other things, healthier things, to do. Two cents.

I would only go to AA if you are a religious person, otherwise they are of no help.

Maybe another support group.

Or you could try cutting yourself off. If stress is the cause of your drinking maybe try to get rid of the stress. See if the drinking ends with that. Alcoholism is a physical addiction, but I am a firm believer of mind over matter. Make yourself stop drinking, try some new kind of stress release, and see where it gets you...

I dont think hes an alcoholic, but this is definitly the starting point, so yeah, id cut back, or more than likely, you WILL be an alcoholic.

If you keep it up, you'll find that those 2 or 3 drinks arent enough to satisfy your craving anymore, and soon enough, you'll be getting hammered every night, and you wont even realize it.

I drink A glass of wine each night while I relax, but I never let myself drink more than that, unless there is a social function involved, then I dont hold back.

If craving alcohol isn't a sign of alcoholism, what is?

Are you taking any SSRI medications such as Paxil? I used to take Paxil for my anxiety and even though I have been drinking since I was 14 (23 now, oh I'm also Russian ) when i was on Paxil I had an insane craving for alcohol.

If you're worried about it, then you should do something about it. See how you cope going a week without.
