Am I dreaming? I want to play the Witcher 3 in 4k

History, my pc is about 5 years old. I have a 2600k cpu, and a gtx680 gpu. I'm looking to upgrade in order to play witcher 3 in 4k at high settings. As I don't upgrade my monitor that often, I'm looking at getting an 4k one. Clearly I need a new GPU, but don't plan on upgrading the CPU until Skylake. Just looking for your thoughts, thanks!

Wait for what though? Clearly what I have won't cut it.

Almost certainly true, but at the same time, we don't know what's needed, nor do we know what other options might appear before the game is released.

Will need at least sli 980 or a water cooler titan x at least to run this game at 4k at 45+ fps (no aa)

I'd either wait another year since we'll see more and improved (and cheaper) 4K monitors or just get a 1440 monitor. I'd take the second option...4K is still a few years away from being prime time anyway IMO.

What about getting one of the 27" 2560x1440 144hz ips panels instead?

That's the sweet spot right now. While it still requires substantially beefy hardware to run that at high framerates, you don't have to deal with scaling issues and such.

1x GTX 970 will run most new games 30-60 fps depending on the game and settings while two will keep you above 60. I find that I get stellar framerates if I use ReShade for SMAA instead of a game's built-in antialiasing settings (often limited to FXAA, MSAA or TXAA which IMO are all blurrier than SMAA).

I have been using a 4k monitor for the past two months now, and I have to say I love it! It's true that if you wait another year or two you'll have some better options, but isn't that always the case? 4k is actually affordable and I would consider the upgrade. Scaling hasn't been a huge issue and in most cases windows does a good job with it.

As for the Witcher 3, there's no way I'll be running it at max. I usually run games at 1440p on my dated 7950, and that may not even be enough for this game. I'll be upgrading soon though, and think that even if you get a 4k monitor and don't have enough horsepower to run the game at 4k, the game will look gorgeous at a lower resolution on it.

It depends then on your school of thought.
A) You guess and purchase graphics cards now in the hopes they run The Witcher 3 in 4K
B) You wait like a reasonable person til The Witcher 3 comes out, see what graphics cards are released in the mean time, see the benchmarks for The Witcher 3, then purchase cards you know are capable of running the game in 4K. It may turn out that there aren't even cards capable of running the game at 4K at decent FPS (unlikely) and that you wasted your money on a 4K monitor/graphics cards that you can't even use to get what you want.

I'm not a guessing man, so I pick B. But some people need to play the game on Day 1, and can't wait that extra 1-2 days, to read a benchmark review and pick the actual best option so I understand if you just HAVE to do option A.

But you don't need to know anything to buy a good monitor. And you don't need to run the game at 4K just because you have a 4K monitor.

OP, the advice to buy a 1440p monitor because "that's all you can run" is dumb. Most people keep monitors for at least 5 years and if 4K panels are good quality and affordable today, then you buy that, because in the near future (1-2 years) you will regret not having done so. Buy a 4K monitor as soon as you have the money for it (because you will immediately benefit in all other usage besides gaming), and then when the game comes out weight your performance and GPU options based on your budget. If you can only afford a GPU that runs the game at 1440p, then so be it. At least when the Witcher 4 comes out, you already have a 4K monitor.

Having said that, if gaming is your primary usage you really need to look at gsync/freesync before you bother with resolution.

It's not just the resolution, but also the IPS 144Hz + freesync/gsync option, that will make it the best all round monitor you can buy at the moment. Personally I doubt that I would find 4K much better than 1440p for gaming.

But most of all I would wait a couple of months to see what new monitors that will show up.
