Am I getting older or does rap nowadays sound bad?

I remember when I was growing up I liked listen to any and all rap from pretty much any artist. Most of the time the rapper in question had a good beat, the words rhymed, and if they cursed, it wasn't overly done and fine. However...

Since 2003ish or so, I have steadily declined listen to rap because now it just seems that they are not even rapping or rhyming. It seems that all the new rap I hear on the radio is just some guy trying to act 'hard' like he owns the world or that he is the ultimate love machine for any woman on the planet. I guess the worst part is the beats are so-so at best and 9 times out of 10 the words don't even rhyme! Am I just too old to appreciate the new style or does anyone else feel this way?

I live in Dallas, TX and they have 97.9 the beat and K104 and after swishahouse music all but vanished I steadily stopped listening to it. (yes I liked Screwed and chopped music somewhat, but I was very picky at which I preferred)

Yes much of it is commercial garbage. the inudstry has changed because instead of encouraging quality albums the industry favors those one hit wonders because they will get the ring tones and downloads and all that stuff.

However There is still real hip hop......check out ghostface killa latest release.

rap sucks ass now. if i listen to rap it's only the old mobb deep, nas, biggie, tupca, gangstar, tribe, etc.

all this new crap is just terrible. its bling this, im rish that, bitches this, crunk that ... blah blah blah.

i honestly think that if biggie and tupac were never murdered that rap wouldn't have gone to the crapper as bad as it has.

EDIT:

i mean when "superman" is considered to be one of the best hip hop songs ... there is a problem.

you might as well just post "rap haters please threadcrap in here" because that's all rap threads ever are. seriously.

IMO there has been good rap since 2003, of course. i won't bother listing who or what i think is good though.

Why not? I'm open to any and all different artists. I'd like to hear something different. If someone bashes you for your taste in music they can go f-themselves. I may not like it but it doesn't effect you what I do and don't like ya?

Most of it is utter shit, now. There is no skill, it's all commercialized. I can lay down a better beat in 5 minutes on my electribe MX than they can pump out of their studio, and a retard could make up crunk-rap lyrics.

i don't mind the new Jay Z. some Kanye is bearable. I have Obie Trice and Dilated Peoples on my iPod right now but that's probably pre-2003... i listen to hip-hop too, female artists like Rihanna and I have even given the new Janet Jackson a spin.... Illmatic, Doggy Style, The Chronic are my staples... plus a bunch of Cypress Hill... i don't know if you consider Gnarls Barkley as 'rap' but that's good too... Beastie Boys have done good stuff since then. anyway that's a sample of what i listen to in terms of rap but i really do try to provide equal time to a broad amount of musical genres. I will sometimes go from listening to Pantera to Norah Jones, stuff like that. The only thing I haven't gotten into yet is country.

Everyone is selling out and signing contracts then they have to produce on the contracts and they don't have anything in them. The result is crap beats and shitty rhymes just to fill the album/contract requirements.

I vote for rap nowadays sounds bad. Rap used to be the poetry of the streets or used to relate the life happenings of those who lived in extremely rough neighborhoods. It also had a better beat IMO and flowed very well.

Rap nowadays just glorifies the riches, b**ches, h**s, and gunslinging lifestyle these wannabe rappers try to convince you that they are living. I'd say 95% of what's out there anymore is written by a professional songwriter who gets royalties, instead of a thug that's relating his life story. Where's my Ice Cube, 2Pac, Dr. Dre, and Notorious B.I.G?

I used to love rap back in the day. Rap used to be the sh!t back in the early to mid 90s when Snoop, Tupac, Wu Tang were out. I can still listen to that stuff cause it never gets old. Even Eminem had some good stuff in the early 2000s. But the stuff that's out these days I can't listen to for a second. It sucks real bad. I like some stuff from T.I. but it's not that great.

more than likely a few years ago you were listening to what was hot on the club scene and much better than what you are getting from canned stations now only playing those that have aligned themselves usually with Clear Channel Media.

Commercialization of any art form tends to diminish quality and creativity. The exception being the concept of commercialization itself as the focus of a work of art.

As for rap, i stopped listening since the "south sound" took over. I still have my favorite artists who I pay attention to like Redman, and there are a few records I've enjoyed the past few years, but even as a fan of rap, I find it harder and harder to pay any sort of attention to it at all anymore.

Hes pretty much the only "recent" artist I enjoy.

So true. Clear channel basically ruined radio and much of the music industry.

I guess I don't understand the correlation to clear channel and bad music. Someone care to explain?
