ive got a socket 754 retail 3000+ athlon 64 on a DFI Lanparty NF3 board
ive got a xp-120 with a 120mm panaflo on it.

even at full throttle on the fan, my cpu temp idles at 45c

ive taken the hsf off, made sure it was mounted correctly, and even rotated it 180 degrees.

is this normal? the hsf isnt even warm when i touch it.

my friend has a 3200 and the xp120/panaflow and says hes getting 33c idle temps?

my mobo temp is 31c and system is 28c

with prime95 running cpu temp goes to 50c

Ppl need to realize that even a stock to a high end expensive hsf idle temps wil not change much .....the proof is in the swing...If you idle at 45c and only loaded to 50c then that swing is where the moeny of the xp120 is best spent....

However great as that may sound no modern air hsf will only have a 5c swing from idle to load...I suspect the temps are bunged and something is not reporting right.....

Make sure you let prime test 1 or 2 run for like at least 30 minutes before you call something load.....

have you experimented with changing direction of how the fan blows???

XP-90/120 don't always have perfectly flat bases. Check it with a straightedge... even a slight curvature in the base is enough to create an air pocket and you can't really fix it by using more thermal paste. That can act as an insulator too if it's too thick. I lapped my XP-90 using 200/400/800/1200 grit and finished up with some metal polish - it did *not* have a perfectly flat base out of the box - the nickel plating around the outside came away quickly... by the time the last of the nickel plate in the center of the base gave way to the 200 grit, my arm was getting tired!

Temps are one of those things that are extremely difficult to compare to another. What is the ambient temp of your room? Is the case under a desk with no ventilation? What are your case temps like?

Well, your friend could keep his room at 20C and yours is at 28C. Even a small degree difference in ambient room temps makes a HUGE difference on CPU temps. Unless your friend brings his rig over and sits it next to yours, I don't think you could have a good comparison.
