Many supposedly bigger towns have tons of distinct identities - you got your beautiful foliage of New England and their picturesque homely charms of villages. Then you got your Tri-state NY/NJ/PA, they're known for their things.

Same goes for the south, easily all the coasts, and all the states that National Parks touch.

So, what does St. Louis do? Because unlike tons of truly unknown towns, this one has a fancy schmancy name and it has a sizable popuation or something.

My hometown Boston has:
1. Boston Commons / Foot Bridge / Esplanade is a world-class city amenity. Just beautiful.
2. Cusine, we dominate - lobstah, chowdah,
3.. alright ill stfu.

Question:
1. What is St. Louis known for in terms of culture, music, cuisine, sports, or anything?
2. Do people justify flying to St. Louis for purely tourism?

St Louis is known for topping pizza with American cheese.

So you are pretty much right.
They have the famous Arch
The Cardinals baseball team is their main sport.

Mississippi river and that arch.

But I'll take you one further, i don't know why anything east of Colorado needs to exist.

I don't know anybody who's flown to St Louis just for the sake of going to St Louis.

The St. Louis airport sucks. You feel like you're taxiing all the way to Kansas City.

St. Louis used to have it's own style of blues but I think that is gone.

WTF you smoking.

From educational perspective alone...
Harvard, Princeton, Yale, you get the idea, all the world-class research and minds that made direct progress to society in math, science, culture, on and on. And that's just NE.

Whether you like NYC or not, it's a world-class influence in many areas of life.

It's not American cheese, it's called Provel.

STL has a couple of excellent universities, Washington University and Saint Louis University. WU is one of the top universities for mathematics. There are a number of data centers here, the US Mint, many insurance companies, Monsanto, and Boeing. Culturally it's bland food, bland beer, baseball, and hockey.

Boeing (used to?) have a presence there. CSB: When I was an undergrad at UM-St. Louis I was one of the RAs for a trio of mathematics & CS department professors doing computational fluid dynamics research for Boeing. They designed the adaptive sensor placement scheme for analyzing air flow over aircraft wings in the wind tunnels. I worked on the visualization software for the sensor grids.

Other than that and the Arch, uh....

Jazz, St. Louis style BBQ, Ted Drewes Frozen Custard (Tasty)

Toasted ravioli...??

Places to take your kid to, include a really nice Zoo that's free to get in, the Magic House and the City Museum. The City Museum is not a museum in the traditional sense. It's a very crazy place that needs to be experienced... https://www.citymuseum.org/

It's ze Gateway to the West ?
My brother-in-law moved there to work for McDonnell-Douglas originally.
I've been to Fitz's, been inside the Arch, been to the Art museum, St. Louis Basilica, Old Spaghetti Factory down near the river, huge cemetery where General William Sherman lies, walked down Del Mar Blvd, airport, some water park, St. Charles at Christmas, etc. Might have tried St. Louis-style ribs once. Ignored Annheuser-Busch and the Cards. Never quite got around to seeing the City Museum.
Been advised to shun East St. Louis.

They have one of the largest lab/chemical/medical research supply companies in the country in Sigma Chemical. Washington University is also a fairly prestigious institution. But yea, the city itself is not much to write home about. I went to college in Springfield, and visited my best friend's house in St. Louis. This was during the 70's and he lived in a nice area, but we drove through miles and miles of trashed, burned out slums to get there. I used to be a big fan of the football Cardinals, but they moved to Arizona.
