NYC and other large cities put stipulations on water usage to minimize their water requirements. When my 10+ year old washer started leaking last summer, I talked to the sears guys and asked which models get returned the most.

They explained the front loaders AND high efficiency top loaders with no agitators both perform so-so. I went online and ordered a SpeedQueen AWN542. My wife was happy with the purchase and the way it performs. I can't wait to replace our dryer with a gas SpeedQueen unit.

Top loading washing machine with the agitator or go home. Mine is 30 years old and still gets clothes so clean you can feel the clean on your skin. Clothes feel different when they are really clean, even if you only "minimally soiled" them.

Meh. Agitators wrinkle the hell out of my pants and shirts, and when I used one I had at least one dress shirt ruined per year, when the point of the collar got caught under the agitator and chewed up or soiled. If anything my front loader gets things cleaner and doesn't damage my clothes.

We haven't had any problems with ours that I'm aware of and it's been a good 2 years with our LGs. The biggest problem whenever I pull clothes out of the washer is all the long hair on the rim. My wife sheds like crazy.

Zeze, does the washer have the "Add Super Wash" button? According to LG's manual, this adds an extra 3 minutes of washing and rinsing to the cycles.

Here's what shocked me. Our dinky little appliance store in town had lower prices than the lowest online deal I could find after factoring in shipping (if any). I had researched ahead of time, and I was all prepared to ask for a pricematch to the best online price I found, but they were already lower. And included free delivery and installation.

Wrinkled isn't really damaged though. You'll just have to iron it. I've never had anything caught under the agitator, might be something wrong with the design on the one you had.

If you want to see stories of chewed up clothes, no machine with an agitator, even a bad one, holds a candle to the high efficiency agitatorless top loaders. Just read their reviews on any review site such as Amazon. Negative review after negative review of torn and worn out clothes due to their lack of water and higher RPM spin cycles.

Had front loaders in our apartment in college (first year there was just a single washer and dryer on the bottom floor, both were crap and obviously a pain in the ass, then the landlord put in stacked front load washer and dryer in each apartment), it worked well I thought but then I wasn't exactly getting stuff that dirty. Now have been using a late 90s top loader and its torn holes in half my clothes (jeans and t shirts) on the normal wash cycle. I don't notice my clothes being any cleaner either.

I think with these newer washers you have to use the right settings and for whites the detergent you use probably makes a lot more difference than older models.

Whatever happened to the "closet" style steam washers? I thought they were supposed to be coming up with some new washing/dryer machines that used steam to clean and would help eliminate wrinkles and dry faster. You basically just hang them in there like a closet and then it cleans and dries them quickly, more efficiently.

Getting my wife to iron anything is an excercise in futility. I sure as heck don't have enough time to iron all my pants and shirts either. We love our front loading washers, a whirlpool duet and also now a newer samsung. We use the whitest whites setting for whites and they come out, shockingly white. Every 3rd white load or so we will use bleach but then again, that's what its for.

EDIT.. Clarification. I was not laughing at disappoint, I was laughing because we had a discussion just yesterday about folding laundry and ironing and my wife said she won't iron anything anymore cause she hates it. I don't mind it per se, I just don't like standing there for an hour ironing everything just to get it wrinkeled again.

i dont have any issues with my front loader getting stuff clean, and i have a two kids and a dog. mine has a setting specifically for whites, and except for actual stains, like ketchup or spaghetti sauce or whatever other thing my minions get on their shirts, my whites look nice and sparkly white.

i think it is most likely that the apartment complex went for the cheapest possible units that just don't do as well as a higher end model might do.

I've used plenty of HE washers over the years and never had issues.

I've owned my current washer since '10 and haven't had any issue with it. I forget what brand it was but it wasn't cheap, it also isn't a front loader but is a top.

My girlfriend has a front loader LG HE Direct Drive that works just fine as well. Putting too much soap into it old man?

As everyone else suggested, can you change the settings at all? We have an LG at home and have no real complaints, and rarely have to use anything but the normal mode/settings. When we do - whether it's bulky, heavily soiled, etc - those modes all seem to get the job done.

Have a sammy set. Door to the washer stays open most of the time when not in use and have not have any cleanliness or smell problem. Had to change out the drum in the dryer at about the 3.5 year point, but no issues other than that.

We like our LG but ours is a little different. We read the reviews before purchasing and noticed that the washer does a great job if you push the extra water button. We push the extra water button every time and it works great.

The commercial model the OP is talking about does not appear to have a way to add extra water.

I don't think we would like ours so much if we were forced to run a regular cycle without the option to add extra water.

One thing I really like about our LG is the big, direct drive, inverter controlled, pancake motor that spins the drum. There are no belts to slip or wear out. The large diameter of the motor gives it plenty of torque. High spin speeds help to wring out extra water so drying takes less time. 10 year warranty as well.

OP you might try "super wash" and see if that helps anything.

I'd be half temped to toss in an extra couple gallons of water with a darn bucket if there was no other way...
