i am having some problems with a win2k3 server drive and want to get my data out of it. i threw in a live cd of ubuntu 5.04, but i can't get the os to detect my drives. i thought it did this automatically?

i tired mkdir then mount, but no luck unless my syntax is all wrong.

Microsoft licenses and 'protects' it's NTFS technology to make sure that people don't use it outside of Windows. This makes supporting NTFS access very difficult.

Mostly it'll just support it read-only.

The correct syntax would be like this:

mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /mnt

were you replace the /dev/hda1 file by the one for your harddrive and partition you want to mount and the /mnt with the directory to were you want to mount it.

The -t tells it what sort of type to use, by default it tries autodetection which fails to detect the file system accurately sometimes..

If it still fails make sure that you have the ntfs kernel driver aviable.

try modprobe'ing it...

modprobe ntfs

and that should load the ntfs read-only driver that is aviable with the Linux system. Then try the mount command again.

Sometimes it helps if you can see the kernel message output. The kernel makes comments about drivers and such and you can find this stuff out by using the 'dmesg' command.

For 'real' access to ntfs with read-write there are a couple third party tools including captive ntfs (which I think is unmaintained now) and then a commercial product that excapes my mind right now.

If you want to allow more regular access to your ntfs partition you have to edit the /etc/fstab file and then add a entry for your ntfs partition and mount point.

there is a guid option for mount that you can use in the fstab configuration file to were it will allow users that are member of a group of your choosing to gain more access rights to it, also there are other options to allow users to mount the directory themselves. That way you can avoid depending on root account or sudo for everything.

See the man file for more details

man mount

hope that helps

i cannot see the drives at all. both drives contain w2k3. now the wierd part is i can boot into both drives, but when they are on the same ide cable (i was trying to slave the drive i needed to get files out of) i can't detect the problem drive. i can't access my files on bad drive because of a ghosting that went bad, i came back and it windows needed me to reactivate but i couldn't because it cannot automatically detect my internet settings.

I would try knoppix or dsl. The ubuntu live disc, and ubuntu in general is more of a desktop system with server capabilities. I had a mb die, and wanted to back up the drive that was in the comp without having to pull it. I first ubuntu, but I had trouble because of the same ntfs stuff, I then stuck a knoppix disc in, and everything worked perfectly. It automounted my drives and everything.
