Races will come and races will go.
Berkeley is the winner. That is the real point.

And like one of your esteemed members has said, it proves to be a tremendous boost in all teams production involved.

Just so you all know, Bandai did belong to the team a good while back. He decided that he would crunch for his country's team for a while, and that he would be back. He kept his promise! He's been a busy boy while he was away too.

Well that's too bad Cobra. I hope they haven't upset you too much! Sometimes squabbles break out for a week or two and then everybody gets back together again. I hope that's the case here.

If you want to be cheeky you could join us for a couple of days before going back. That would cause a heart flutter or two amongst several teams. If you just want to pump a few units our way whilst you are "idling" may I suggest ta-cannibalcows@ragingbull.com as useful email address. That is the address of the Federation, a sub-team comprising members from around the world.

Regards and hope it all gets happy again soon.

Ugggh and OMG I just reread that!!!!!! Holy crap!!!!!

You just lit a huge bonfire Cobra!! Cheeky beggar!!

<< that's so lame. if this race is going to end up being just a recruiting race for people who ALREADY have lots of WU's, then I wonder, what's the point of having a race at all? What's the point of me cranking out my puny 3 WU's a day if we're just going to be recruiting people to change teams? That's ridiculous. >>

I've always felt that way about races. It seems that we should only be measuring NEW WUs crunched, not the ability to recruit. Not that we recruited Bandai. He just returned. People are free to join, but we should only count the freshly crunched WUs.

BTW, DSLR is producing (since the race started) 2,600 new WUs per day, a pretty good average.

I know what you mean Corsairpro I have something like 9 computers in my house at the moment.

The weather is starting to turn colder here in England yet my house is still roasting. Seems I have built my own hot air heating system using CPU's.

I agree that this race is meaningless if it is going to be determined by bringing in users and counting their preexisting WU's. Only WU's produced since the race began should count. This is not sour grapes. It is simply fair play. If the other side doesn't want to play this way, we should withdraw from the challenge.

what gets me is they (DSL Reports) stated how unfair it was to try to recruit the 75k wu guy, even though that thread dates back earlier than the first MENTION of a race between TA and DSL R. Ah well, it matters not, just need to obliterate them with our massive recruiting abilities and assimilation abilities.

I checked the stats this morning and found this totally unexpected. Absolutely shocked at what I saw. I'm with ScottMo on this one. A true race would have been with existing members and only new WU's produced, not transferred. However, with Berekeley monkeying around with the stats, its not always possible to detect new vs. changed members. I can make a small edit to my profile and I'll show up on the DSLR website as a new member.

The race is fun but the real goal for us (at DSLR) is to continue to gain members, increase production and increase our rank in the team standings. Because of this, I see this race as a means to an end and not an end to a means. I would hope Anandtech feel the same. Although, it IS nice to win, this is only a battle in a much greater "war".

CobraIce could join either team for a couple of minutes and the entire race is done. But, he'd be gone shortly thereafter. What good would that do? I'm hoping that the new members we have at DSLR will remain there and are not just here for the "show".

Seaquake--a true race need not be limited to existing members. It needs only to be limited to WU's produced since the race began. Certainly one of the benefits of a race like this is to stimulate overall WU production, to the benefit of the entire S@H community. So if the race stimulates the recruitment of new members, who produce new WU's, or if it stimulates dormant members to resume WU production (as it did in my case), then it is a good thing. But team WU counts that jump up merely because some joins a team and contributes preexisting WU's is meaningless if this is truly to be a race to something.

I dunno how I feel about new members joining with a boatload of WU's. On one side, it kinda taints the race. On the other side, it boosts membership and production. I'd have to say that it's good for everyone though. After all, the end result is more members and production for both teams.

Now lets get at recruiting the 75K guy currently with Microsoft and cobra (if he's really done with the S@N team).

Exactly so. At DSLR, we've seen an overwhelming push by existing members to upgrade, tweak, recruit, etc. I've personally upgraded or added 3 boxes for this race. I've thought from the beginning that the preexisting wu's of new members joining Team Anandtech should be considered meaningless. By my count, taking away all the spikes from TA's new members preexisting wu's, DSLR is leading the race.

Congrats on the new assimilation DSLR!!!!

I agree that the only reason we had a such an early lead was because of our new members. I didn't see anyone from TA complain then.

It was my understanding that the race was for fun and was being done to promote growth for both teams and therefore included both new WUs
and new members.

Remember guys this is for FUN, so relax and enjoy it. This just means we have to work a little harder is all.

Okay, I'm chilling out. I didn't realize we (TA) had also benefited from preexisting WU's. I still think, as a matter of principle, that we shouldn't be counting preexisting WU's. But if everybody is okay with it, who am I to complain?

I just assimilated another computer/cpu. I'm hoping to add one or two more today.

If the race is going to fall to this, I guess we should go ahead and actively try and get the guy from MicroSoft with 75K WU's to join our team. We win. Yay.

I think the new recruits should count. Like someone said earlier, this race was started partly to promote the growth of the both teams(and to flex some TA muscle). Since we can't all afford to buy 2 Palominos and a K7 every month, recruiting is the way to go, right? Having said that, is it ok to send a case of beer to CobraICE?

Poopaskoopa is hitting on the real issue here.....how to get CobraIce to turn traitor to his country and joind Anandtech.

CobraIce is a great guy from what I've seen and his continued interest in our forums, even though there is no longer a race amoung TA and S@N, his massive production, and his way of keeping things interesting by his unsuall dumping style have made him one of the most entertaining people in this project. Crangrats to you CobraIce and I hope you work out your problems with the S@N team and put a scare in Ars Technica.:Q

I've talked to Ameesh, he said the Microsoft guy isn't answering him anymore, so he thinks he's no longer interested. Don't count on that.
