blessing in disguise, GA banned

I haven't looked in this thread until I read the forum announcement about this, which I just saw. I just thought the OP was mistaken or something. Maybe that's a good thing, I probably would have been tempted to go and read some shit

Are the mods offering a reward to whoever finds GA's new account the quickest?

It is what you did afterwards that caused the banning

Unless he hacked AT somehow to gain access to the forum I don't see how you can justify banning him permanently. Don't get me wrong I won't miss the guy (though I'm sure he'll be back in some way, shape, or other username) but it's kind of like arresting someone because they took money somebody else left in an ATM and using it to have fun with his friends, don't you think? Unless he was "selling secrets" or something this is kind of ludicrous, someone else fucked up and he's banned out of curiosity? Give me a break.

I find the announcement unsatisfactory. In the first sentence it's vaguely explained "an event happened where the secured, moderator areas of the forum were left open" then 2 sentences later "upon investigation, we found several people responsible for the downloading and dissemination of the information" so then, no explanation as to why this happened in the first place? Why not focus on the cause so it doesn't happen again instead of "investigating" people who were just curious? That's all I'm trying to say. In this post-Wikileaks world if something like this happens and information gets public then tough shit, but hey I guess the "perpetrators" will be going to virtual Gitmo now, so justice is served. I guess the mods had to make a point though, I just can't figured out what that point is, don't go where you shouldn't be perhaps, not that there's signs around here categorically saying that.

i have no read the middle part of this thread, so maybe i missed something, but i assumed he catalogued a lot of shit and then distributed it to others. even if he had no malicious intent, it's like someone saying 'hey creepy guy with the mustache, there's some unattended children over there...here, here you go, got one for you.'

You need to keep in mind this forum is like a private club. This has nothing to do with leaking government secrets or Gauntanemo bay legally or illegally detaining people.
We are not talking about enforcing laws that need to conform to US Constitution. And the "punishment" is simply not being allowed to post here for a while. They can still read the forums, and if they stay logged in they can still see 100 posts per page or whatever, just like a normal user.

I hear you, I just like playing devils advocate sometimes.

a better anology would be someone forgot to lock the bank and GA decided to walk in through the door and take the money.

Except this is an internet forum.

Don't want your private areas publically accessable... make sure your permissions are set properly.

Sorry... if someone doesn't configure a forum properly... and someone reads something they shouldnt.... this isnt THEIR fault..

also: "With an event like this, the staff would think that membership would report this “breach” in our security and not actually go into the area to snoop around."

maybe 1 out of 9000 people would do that

(myself included)

That's how I see it. Secure your shit; always. If it isn't secure, what happens, happens. I liked GA, but he could be a real dick. I wouldn't mind seeing him back.

except it doen't matter if it's a bank or a forum

"Don't want your deserted bank publically accessable... make sure your doors are locked properly.

Sorry... if someone doesn't lock a door properly... and someone takes something they shouldnt.... this isnt THEIR fault.."

I'm not really seeing the difference

there isn't a difference.

if your bank manager doesnt lock the front door... doesn't turn on the alarm... and leaves the bank vault wide open.... do you REALLY think something isnt gonna go missing??

and i'm sorry..

Please let me know what fantasy world this occurs in.
It's human nature to be curious. Ever drive by an accident? Do you look?
Of course you do.

Lol i would expect for something to go missing, but i would also expect the person who stole something to get punished, and the person who left the door open to get a reprimand (in private) and a reminder to remember these things. Just because the door was open doesn't mean you can steal and claim, well they expected me to because the door was open.

no, you do. i dont. unless im physically stopped by traffic, im trying to get where i need to go and i dont slow down to rubberneck.

nor do i go look in forums where i know im not supposed to have access. was i tempted? well, hell, ofc i was.

my point is, i dont think it is unreasonable for the mods to have expectations that people do what they thought was the right thing. unfortunately, the 'right' thing is relative to all parties involved, isn't it.

godless astronomer did what he did, the mods did what they did. if you chose to live your life on the edge, you have to be prepared to fall off. its neither right nor wrong, it just is.

Me.. along with a million other people, daily.

listen to your local traffic reports...

rubberneck delays are exactly for that reason. Human nature.

way to miss my point. yes a lot of people do. a lot of people also dont.

so if you forget to lock your door, I get a free pass at stealing all your shit with no reprocussions? doesn't matter if someone forgets to lock a door, stealing is still stealing.

fantasy world or not, if we abolished all rules and laws that conflicted with human nature we wouldn't have any left. Yes I look when I drive by an accident, I look to see if they need help because I have basic medic training from the army, not because of the gore (saw plenty of that in Afghanistan).

GA knew he wasn't supposed to read stuff in the mod forum, but he didn't care and did it anyways, now he has to face the consequences...

but he didn't get banned just for looking, he got banned because he started linking to the mod forum.

yea.. the point was "everyone should behave according to some fantasy we have that everybody always does what's right, and noone does whats wrong"

lol no, read my post again.

the point was, if you chose to do something that you think is ok, but you know others think is not, you must also then chose to be prepared for retribution if it comes to you.

Well, i hope noone here has ever read wiki-leaks... cuz.. you know.. that stuff is classified, and you shouldn't be reading it.

Hopefully you just report the breach in security to local authorities, and don't try to snoop around documents you shouldn't be reading.

No theft occurred here. An area formerly unaccessible to the public was left ungated, so the public went in, and some took pictures. Nothing more, nothing less. I don't see it as a big deal either way. Whoever left the gate unlocked should be pissed at themselves, but they can try harder next time.

I don't, I can't be bothered as I have more important stuff to do.

this whole comparing it to stealing from a bank is crazy. nothing was stolen. this is more like someone leaving their paycheck on the table and someone takes a gander at it while sitting around the table. while they possibly know a bit more about you than you'd like, it in no way would be deemed as an egregious moral blunder. its your own damn fault for leaving it there...
