Am I the only one not looking forward to "Cloud" computing?

It seems to me that our beloved PC's that we love building, storing information, and processing our beloved programs and applications on slowly look like they might fade away some day due to Cloud computing.

Am I the only one that doesnt feel comfortable with all my info stored on a server somewhere? Not being able to back up my personal saved games?

I mean, I understand the use of Cloud computing...but I just feel like too many companies are pushing for it while to little people are saying "no, we dont want/need that"...

Its coming to the point that every piece of software you buy you will no longer have a physical disk for anymore...

I dont know, it just seems like the beginning of the end...I can see everything being limited and controlled with Cloud computing...to me it all gives me that "Big Brother" feeling...

It's Timesharing 3.0 or 4.0, and you're not alone -- you'll have to pry my local storage from my cold, dead hands

Who's forcing you to use cloud exclusively?

Just to name a few now...Steam and EA for one...with newer EA games, all your saved games are stored on their servers...

Now, I know thats not a big list or anything, but looking on tech sites and stuff, more and more companies are pushing it...its not that big of a deal now, and sure one can opt out not to be a part of Cloud computing, but I have a feeling that not too far in the distant future you arent going to have a choice...

Cloud computing is the future, and it's people like you, the neo-Luddites, who complain. You aren't comfortable with the technology because you have simply failed to understand it. You have failed to understand what it means. You have failed to understand its purpose. You have failed to see what the future holds. How does it feel to fail so completely?

To me...that's actually convenient. No more hassle to back up save files and re-install them after a rebuild, or replacing a HDD, or whatever.

I opened a Steam account way back when HL2 was a free coupon with my 9600 XT, or whatever it was. I didn't have steam on the next computer for maybe 4? years, then re-installed on the new one. Everything I had on there is still around! crazy.

well...the games are. Not sure about those saves as I have had 0 desire to install or play HL2 after the first couple of days.

I should also say that for our research lab and the amount of sequencing data we produce and churn through (about 400gb per week, whole genome assembly and analysis), cloud has become essential. several post-docs running all sorts of assembly and analysis processes across the same data sets, simultaneously.

it's the only way we can do it, right now.

It bothers me simply because I hate a crappy internet connection, and sometimes no connection at all.

Sounds pretty damn convenient vs keeping/losing CD-ROMs.

I thought you were worried about storing personal info, i.e. financial documents and child pr0n on a cloud server.

Though it'll suck to be unable to properly play a game if the company that made it goes out of business, or if they simply decide to stop offering online services related to certain products.

lol...nice...

I guess Im the only one that actually likes having physical media...cant keep track of your CD's and DVD's? Sounds more like a personal problem than an actual widespread problem.

And also, what if you are somewhere that has a poor signal or no signal at all? All that data that you have on some Cloud server only god knows where is going to be completely inaccessible...

Im not saying Cloud storage is the worst thing ever, its just a good idea in my eyes...

Yup. Shit happens to big companies all the time, and the consumer is the absolute last thing they give a shit about when things go south. I may be inclined to back my stuff up to a server somewhere, but I want a local copy at all times.

I have no need or desire to store anything in a cloud.

Even if
the morals of the company in possession of my data were unimpeachable and they did not abuse my property in any way, I still could be charged access/storage fees or have access blocked when their data center overheats.

I can just see a future where I have to pay tree-fiddy every time I want to use WordCloud to edit a document, or CloudPoint to create a presentation. Ugh. Of course it's free initially, just to get us to adopt the paradigm.

I hope it never hits to the point where companies don't even release actual software anymore. I like having all my stuff locally, where it does not have to depend on an outside source and I have full control over my environment.

I can see cloud computing having it's uses but hopefully it never takes over.

Cloud computing is as much the future as digital was the future of printed text.

Yet, books and similar material are still irreplaceable today for a variety of reasons.

And local computing, private servers, physical disks will always have its place. You're never going to be able to access your files via the fastest fiberoptic broadband connection as fast as you can access your files on an insane SATA6 SSD.

You have a limited understanding of what cloud computing is, or you're just not getting it...not sure which.

Why would you not want any software you want instantly available instead of having to wait for/keep track of physical media, and loose your access to the software if the media becomes damages?

Why would you not want your information and apps to be available anywhere you go instead of having to wait to get home/to the office to use them?

Why would you not want your software to be patched on download instead of having to seek out the manufacturer's web site and download patches manually?

This reminds me of those arguments in the early 90's where geeks would argue they could use command lines in DOS faster and more efficiently than icons in Windows, so there was no need for a GUI.

Because we don't want our data on a server we cannot control, and we don't want to lose all access if the internet goes down, or is slow.

It's about control. I rather have all my apps and data locally at home in an infrastructure I have 100% control over. If I want to access from somewhere else, then I setup my own VPN, where I have full control over the security and configuration.

Is it possible for the cloud servers to get hacked? What if all the data somehow gets compromised? Just wondering..

Anything can get hacked. All it takes is time and effort.

I just got this bad feeling that once cloud computing really takes off, hackers will focus more of their attention on stealing information from a cloud based server. Cloud computing = more fraud, stolen credit card information, data manipulation, etc etc perhaps?
