Am I the only one slightly freaked out by iCloud?

First off, with an iMac, unibody Macbook, iPad 2 and iPhone 4, iCloud seems to be the answer to a lot of my prayers. That being said, the recent PSN hacks and whatnot has me worried that with all my data stored on Apple's server, a breach in security could be catastrophic.

Am I the only one who's a little freaked out by this?

Do you have a gmail account? Do you have anything on said gmail account that you would rather not let anyone else have? Do you have an account on really site anywhere that stores your personal data or credit card info?

Apple has had more credit cards on file than Sony for years, and although I think they did have a small breach a couple of years ago I don't think that any useful information got out (CC#s but no names, names but no emails that sort of thing).

It is the 'cost of doing business' as it were, I think they also said that the data is only going to be stored for 30 days on their servers

I was going to post about Gmail as well. Or Amazon. Or Newegg. Or Buy.com. Or Ebay. Or Paypal. Yes, there's a risk to posting it online. But companies are pretty good about refunds and whatnot (monetary & paid service-wise), and I definitely wouldn't keep everything on a cloud (data-wise) without some sort of local backup.

I hear ya, Apple and other sites have kept tight lip about who owns what.

For me, i'm excited about iCloud. It'll be nice to sync contacts between my devices and the apps and music i bought through itunes.

I'm signing up, if for nothing more than getting rid of the ads that go along with Gmail... As far as the cloud, I like Apple's version better than Google's and Amazon's, and combined with local storage of the same data, I'll be pretty comfortable using iCloud.

What I like about cloud is that it doesn't store the data long term. It just help sync your devices.

One big thing I think Apple has an opportunity for is privacy & security. No ads, no selling your data to 3rd parties, etc. They can be the white knight in the industry and really stand out from the crowd if they do that.

But then again, iCloud is free...ain't gonna pay for itself :awe:
