So they make a hatchback, which people generally purchase for the utility, but decide to destroy the utility. Gotcha.

There's a hatch version of the Civic:

It just gets several mpg less on the highway because of its rear design.

Not sure how they "destroyed" the utility, but the cargo space falls within its class. It's not class leading (that would go to the Golf), but I definitely trust Honda reliability over VW's over the life of the car. I think it's a decent econobox for price/comfort/features/mileage.

Funny thing, when this first came out, many were recommending the older NA 2.0 over the new turbo 1.5 over reliability concerns, and Honda has now recalled a lot of the 2.0's for piston ring issues. No reports yet of any issues with the turbo version.

Yes, the extreme slant in the rear destroys its utility to the point that it is not worth purchasing. Yes they did it for fuel economy reasons. And yes, they fucked up its utility because of it.

To me, the new Civic is very "busy", but not quite ugly.

That's because the roofline is the exact same angle as the 1st generation Insight, a 70mpg car. It's essentially an airfoil. This is how Honda managed to get the highway fuel economy so high on the new Civic.

Related interesting fact is that in the previous major rehaul in 2006, the coupe had .28 cd vs .31 of sedan. But honda's mpg data shows no diff in hwy mileage.

Gearing and the CVT makes a huge difference too. Tall overdrive gears make a huge difference on the highway (assuming it matches the efficient range of your engine).

Even if you drop below the efficient range, higher load at lower revs is almost always better. The only time taller gearing isn't better, is when it's so tall you have to downshift.

If you're curious, I can explain why.

like the look, but agree of the utility being damaged due to the design to optimize fuel economy. make a hatch a hatch!

I keep hearing about how Honda is back in the small car game with the new Civic, how awesome it is, but to me it looks bad. Very bad. Like, not how a car is supposed to look. Ungainly shapes everywhere. Mainly the 4-door, with its bubble-butt. The couple looks a little nicer.

Anyone else agree?
Definitley do, .. I've read hear people saying how it looks good from this angle and that and its growing on them...
Honestly guys and girls first impression is always the most honest and bites reality first .
If your first impression is mmmmm , can't make up my mind, then it definitley doesn't have the " wow factor " for you...Why would you want something that you feel sheepish in driving ..Youve got to love what you drive ,most people spend alarge lump of their lifes behind the wheel....Me personally sorry Honda but its but ugly....

My first impression was that's going to be a real PITA to wash and wax, way too much effort for an economy car.

People don't wash or wax economy cars. At least I think that's what's going on.

At least up here in the land of harsh winters, I don't even see Chevy Cavaliers or Ford Escorts around anymore, and the few first-gen Focuses I still see on the road are rapidly turning into to brown powder. Civics and Corollas fare better, because I think they are made with better rust protection and they're a bit more bulletproof, but the turn-of-the-century jelly-bean looking Civics are still starting to disappear too.

I honestly think people just treat them as disposable, don't take care of them, and scrap them when something expensive breaks. Because when I do see an older economy car, it'll be in absolutely gorgeous shape, without a spec of rust or anything. But that's a rarity. At least along the route of my commute.

YMMV. But our weather eats cars here.

20+ y.o. midsize or large cars, 20+ y.o. trucks, SUVs, minivans, etc., those are all over the place. But people take better care of them from the get-go, IMO.

Tell me about the weather in MN, I had a 1977 Chevy 4X4, bought new. It rusted out in 4 years. I had to redo the cab corners and rocker panels. Replace the front fenders and repair the rear wheel housings

The vast majority of people aren't car enthusiasts. They just want a tool that will get them from A to B with least amount of hassles/cost. Looks are entirely subjective, and this is probably the best econobox in terms of value/features/power. The Corolla desperately needs a refresh, but manufacturers are too busy paying attention to crossovers (gotta focus on what is in demand by people)

I am starting to accept it, but still not a fan. I thought it was hideous when I first saw it.
It looks better in black, so you cannot see that ugly honeycomb blob beneath each taillight.

It was one of the old Top Gear boys that said, "It's like the designers.....just kept designing it"

I think it is more the design and quality of materials that prevents rust. If you live in the rust belt, it is almost impossible to keep slop and road salt off the car. Yes, you can wax the car and protect the paint somewhat, but you will still get rust on the underside and even through the body panels from underneath if the materials and rust protection are poor. I think the problem has been greatly reduced, if not nearly eliminated, in the past 10 to 15 years though, at least for body panel rust.

It also depends on how many areas there are where salt/snow can sit and slowly rot the metal.

Total OT but I just saw a 2010ish Silverado Crew completely done in Rhino liner bumper to bumper. Not sure how long that stuff actually lasts but doing that to an economy car wouldn't cost that much and might keep it on the road for a very long time.

WTH is that? Cars aren't supposed to look like anything.

It’s hideous. I would have a talk with my design dept if I were Honda. It’s so ugly I would sell it if I got one for free rather than drive it. It reminds me of the Prius, oh wait that’s a Honda too. Oof.
