Am I the only one who thought the original John Wick was mediocre at best?

Because it was a bad ass movie where Keanu Reeves kicks ass in. There's no need for deep plot when he does what he did in John Wick. I'd rather much watch John Wick than many other movies that some people love. It's like the first Taken movie with Liam Neeson, no need for a great plot when the action is so well done.

I think its the combination of the letter and dog from his wife in the beginning of the movie creating a strong connection to the character, and then the character being really bad ass.

If you compare JW and other movies such as Expendables to Oscar caliber movies then you would be disappoint. Just take them for what they are, action packed sequences for 2 hours of entertainment.

I like JW movie a lot than the remakes of Spiderman (after Tobie M.).

There isn't many action movie now a day that isn't CGI to hell. JW, Bonds and Cruise's are about the best you get if you want some "good" genuine action movie. Check out some YT footage and see how much work Cruise and Reeves invest into the movies to make it looks genuine.

My wife hates that sort of movie, but in John Wick she absolutely hated the antagonist and cheered the violent deaths of everyone associated with him. (Luckily we did not see it in a theater.)

Didn't care for it much either. The over the top one man kills an army flicks were cool when I was like 13. Just mindless boredom to me now. Same thing with straight shoot em up fps games. Loved those growing up, now boring as shit.

I'd give it an above average rating myself, and that's speaking as someone who normally doesn't bother with movies like Wick.

Couple parts irked me, cheese did make an appearance. But a couple times I was also impressed. I expected total shit honestly. Not sure if I'll check out the sequel.

You have to have the right attitude going into a movie like John Wick. It's not going to be Citizen Kane or the Godfather, it's not trying to be. It wanted to be a brain dead, escapist action flick and it was a brain dead, escapist action flick. If you expected it to be something that was violently entertaining for a couple of hours and then forgotten almost instantly then the movie was a resounding success and was a fine example of the genre. If you expected something more then you were going to be disappointed.
