Get a GTI 5 door.

Safe as hell. Spunky. 4 doors for the family. A hatch for functionality. Better gas milage than the SI.

You can get them for around 21k new.

You can order them. Should be in lots in July. Invoice on the 3 door is 20,500'ish. The 5 door is going for $500 more.

That's 21k at invoice. VW's sales aren't exactly beeming...dealers are really wanting to move cars. You can do it for invoice.

I really don't buy the whole "didn't have money for a performance car" bit. 6k for an Escort? I paid $2500 for my XR4Ti. $2000 for my Rabbit GTI. $200 for my Volvo 242. I could go on and on. If cash is really that tight, why not be a little more sensible and buy a solid classic performance car. People are talking about buying a new GTI. How about one from the late 80s? Reliable, very fun to drive, and great gas mileage. You can pick one up for $1500...

You'll never be able to fully appreciate the car if you make the jump from an Escort to something like the new Civic Si.

My current car is a 1996 Ford Escort 2-door hatchback that I have owned for six years, and is my first and only car I've ever owned.

Thing is, my car goes completely against my personality. I have been obsessed with cars since I was old enough to speak. (My mom has stories of me staring out the window on trips spouting "car! car!" over and over.) Until I was about 12 my dream job was a car carrier driver, and I have a collection of Dodge Viper memorabilia containing over 500 cars. My wife does not understand my obsession. She thinks cars are just for going from point A to point B.

I know in my heart that I NEED something fun and "cool" (to myself at least) and that has power/punch in it. My budget is limited to around the $20K mark give or take a few K. The Civic Si seems to be the shoe-in for the total package of what I want in a car, but will I look like a wanna-be ricer?

Any other options? And how do I convince my wife that a Honda Accord is not gonna cut it for me?

Take it ull love it !

Love it when people suggest cars automatically whenever a person asks a question relating to cars. The man asked whether or not a Civic Si will suit him, not asking for suggestions on other cars. The Si is an extremely fun and enjoyable car. Get it. There are many people out there who are above 30 that have Mazda 3s, M3s, GTIs etc. I've seen many with Mustangs, Beetles etc. It doesn't matter what age you are. If you like a certain car, get it. It is about you being happy, not worrying what others may perceive you as. I really would love to get the Acura RSX, but since it is going out of production, get the Si. Not much of a difference. Test drive first of cource and be patient.

My 20th AE is in great shape and I've never had any dealer probs.

How many VWs have you owned recently?

You're not too old for any car. Unless you're petty enough to give a flying ****** what other people think about you and your car.

I bought the car when I started dating my wife and she lived 4 hours away. I needed something with low miles to drive back and forth every weekend. I don't regret the Escort purchase. It has been rock solid for six years with all the miles I have put on it. I just think now is my last chance to get a nice car.

And part of the reason I like the Si is the size of it. I love small cars. I feel so much more aware of the dimensions of my Escort than I do bigger cars, and it makes me more comfortable to push it more.

if you need 4 doors, get the GTI. Best value for the money imo.

200hp, good interior, 0-60 in under 7 seconds...an auto transmission that shifts faster than manual.

all for $21k.

Again, here we go with the suggestions. I know this is off-topic and people are free to do whatever they wish. But the man asked for a specific question. And why do we assume he will need 4 doors? Going slightly faster from a red light than the other car is not a huge thing. An Si is plenty fast. Excellent handling and we know about Honda quality. I would love a 4 door GTI myself.

Lets answer the man's question. You know, the one he listed on the first page.

I didn't assume he'll need 4 doors...his wife insisted on it. READ THE FIRST POST before you assume that I assume.

You know...the first post listed on the first page.

I suggested it because of the 4 door comment from his wife. Plus the fact that you *can* equip it with a DSG making for a fun drive for hubby, but a functional automatic in the even that wifey has to drive it.

It's a very safe car and it offers far more flexibility than the SI does. It also offers better fuel economy.

If you have to sell a car to the wife, it's easier to do it with the GTI than it is the SI.

If you aren't married, you wouldn't understand.

I don't understand this mentaility, why is it that families will always default to getting an SUV or minivan? For one thing they're atrocious and another, I think there is no use for them in most families. SUVs are infinitely more unnecessary than minivans but then I see these families with like two or three kids and I think, wtf?

Get a nice sedan, at least you're not over compensating for something but at the same time it doesn't scream SOCCER MOM all over it.

You can cram 4 adults in the back of a Hyundai Accent...but do you really want to? It's all about having flexibility.

Minivans, and SUV's to a degree offer that. You can cram far more crap into a Minivan/SUV than you can a sedan. You aren't limited by the space that a trunk offers. You have a factory mounted roof rack that you can slap a space booster or bikes onto. You have 4 captains chairs for comfort. You can take out the seats or fold down the seats for much more cargo room than any sedan could dream of offering.

When you load up two kids, a dog, two adults and a weeks worth of crap for all of them, a sedan just doesn't cut it any more.

For normal driving around town, yeh a sedan is fine. But if they are routinely traveling on the weekends to see family and what not, you really appreciate the extra room.

I think Civic SIs are sweet. Go ahead and buy it, honestly. If you like it, and you want to get it, then get it!

Used RSX-S?

I love my RSX, much nicer interior than the civic imho, and without the cheap rice burner stigma.

Clearly you haven't worked on a lot of cars.

To clarify, I was speaking of newer vehicles. Mainly the 90's because I haven't worked on any Honda's newer then 2000, or any older then 1988 or so. And I've worked on countless other cars, old American cars in all shapes (which are also very easy) but when compared to other cars in the 90's, Hondas are the easiest I've worked on personally - and much easier then the cars I was mainly referencing like the Subaru and Mitsu

But by all means, please tell me what you think is easier to work on. And also what Honda's you've worked on. New cars, no older then 1990 - because cars used to be a lot easier to work on then they are now.

Most manufacturers, namely the European manufacturers, actually go out of their way to make it so consumers can't work on them. That way they rake in more cash on repairs. THis is especially true of VW, and trust me - I know people who not only are mechanics for dealerships (including lead mechanics) but regional people who have told me this verbatim. Its one of VW's business strategies.

I know a guy at work that drives red scion with 18inch wheels. He said that he got a great deal on it and it's limited edition.

He's 70 years old. Never to old..

Too old for the Civic SI...BS We looked pretty close at the Civic SI, but went with a Tiburon GT instead.

I don't think cars have an "age range", the Civic SI is a nice little ride IMO.
