I'm thinking about building another X2 system as well. But, I will definitely wait for two things:

1. The actual price cuts to happen, THEN wait for them to trickle down thru Newegg and the like to see how much the price I PAY gets cut

2. A few comprehensive reviews of C2D chips and their motherboards by reputable review sites. I'm as AMD as the next guy...my only Intel rig is my dual Xeon server! But, if for the same (or less) money, I can get better performance, I know where my money will go. That said, the total PLATFORM (CPU/Motherboard/Memory) has to be the better choice.

I'm in the same boat as you. Nowadays I only trust a DFI board for serious overclocking, although I do realize a good OC'ing board when they crop up elsewhere.

For budget OCing, I find that Epox and Biostar offer several good products.

I was trying to wait for Conroe to appear so I could snatch up a cheap X2 from someone who was jumping ship, but the wait just got too long. I have been waiting (and looking) for the last 3 months for a decent deal, and finally scored a 4200+ for $250 a few days ago. I know I might have been able to get one for substantially less in a month or so, but I found myself becoming one of the "there's something faster just around the corner" crowd. I don't think I'll be regretting the purchase a bit as my trusty 3.0 Northy is retired after two years of constant service. I'm looking forward to seeing a healthy decrease in my video encoding times.

To those saying the X2 3800+ price won't be cut in half: It pretty much has to. The price has to be low enough for people not to shell out the extra cash needed for a Core 2 Duo. And low enough for people not to buy a P-D 9XX CPU instead. Dual core CPUs are taking over and it doesn't make sense to charge upwards 300 bucks for the cheapest model. Especially considering its rather weak per core performance.

Slashing the price to 150 dollars would make me seriously consider going X2 despite Conroe's performance advantage. It has also been hinted that K8L CPUs will be released on the AM2 platform, so AM2 could prove to have a nice upgrade path.

EDIT: I just saw that the E6300 will be introduced at a rather tempting 200 bucks, or so. This may make even a cheap X2 3800+ not so interesting. The fact that a Core 2 Duo will be faster per clock and likely consume less power is worth a little extra.

We're just going to have to wait and see..I'm leaning towards the "high demand, low supply" theory and those Core 2 Duo's will be more expensive than the price charts indicate...however I do believe AMD can supply us with X2 3800+'s in the $150-175 range.

I did notice that Biostar has some AM2 boards for around $75 that look pretty decent (their AM2 Nvidia 550 in particular). I'm thinking it might take DFI a while to get the infinity's out for AM2, since they are a bit delayed with the Lanparty release as it is. I'm just waiting till the end of July, then we will really see.

What about Gigabyte?
Funny, I trust just about every other manu except DFI...

If the Opteron doesn't drop, will the X2 3800 be better to buy? Does the X2 3800 come with the nice heatsink the Opteron does? Or will you have to order one with it?

I'm thinking I may want to jump on a 939 X2 3800+, keep my current Epox board and 1 gig of DDR, and just add another gig of DDR. That'd probably be good for all of 2007 at the least, no?

Why should ATI price the x1900xtx @ $300. NV had to slap 2 gpus together to beat it and it's still has a better image quality. At first I thought you said x1900xt, but x1900xtx @ $300 now is a bit unrealistic.

This is good stuff, though it makes the $390 CND i spent on my Opty seem bad.

Because it would cause a price war thats good for the consumer.

He was saying that ATi and Nv dont seem to get into price wars like AMD and Intel do.
