This trial is for the Italian people, she will never step foot outside the US again.

US won't extradite her because the ultimate result of the first case was innocent. They won't accept a new trials results because of double jeopardy. However, other countries might allow it, so she probably won't ever travel.

Not unless she has a chance to play Borris Spassky in an epic world championship rematch.

I remember reading an in-depth article at the time of the acquittal and being thoroughly disgusted with how much of a botched trial and investigation the authorities over there conducted. Seriously, their plot reads like a cheap dime-store novel in terms of motive and their evidence is so thin as to be ludicrous. Her DNA was everywhere! No shit! She lived there!

Agreed.

This verdict is ridiculous. No fucking way our government should hand her over.

I think read the same article was thought the exact same thing.

Incidentally, when I was still active duty, I knew guys who were stationed in Italy, Aviano Air Base. Pretty much all of them came back with horror stories about how shitty the Polizia were.

BTW that guy is serving time IN JAIL for the murder.

not that it matters. knox is staying put in the US

doubtful. All the evidence is very shady and the fact they also have someone who is in jail and admits to it.

This is not correct. Guede is in jail for concorso in omicidio which translates more or less to "being an active part in a murder" and maintains that Knox and another figure he could not recognize were at the scene.

I think anybody who can read the whole case in Italian would reach the conclusion that all three are guilty and acted together.

However, given that quite a few elements of evidence are not admissible in court because they were collected and/or stored under questionable conditions, the verdict became much more uncertain and eventually it's not at all surprising if they are acquitted. But it's an OJ-Simpson-kind of acquittal.

It's just murder. The US government doesn't care about murder. If it was about copyright infringement, then she'd have to worry.

huh?

It's nearly guaranteed she didn't actually have anything to do with it.

If you were being questioned about a crime you knew nothing of, would your first instinct be to try to frame somebody else for it? Because that's what they did (and have already been convicted of).

That alone should should have you wonder...

I admit, I missed that, or completely forgot that detail.

This trial has been in and out of the news for so long now... I've gone and performed a complete brain dump of the topic. It doesn't impact my life whatsoever, so I truly don't care.

My bad. That detail does raise suspicions. Granted, not at all enough suspicion. Innocent people have dug themselves into nasty holes before.

You did not miss it. Her lawyers did an amazing job at buying publicity and/or selling the story to the media. That part almost never gets mentioned on the American media.

Even when they talk about the time she served, they never mention she was actually serving a sentence for slender for which she had already received a verdict. It always sounds like she was kept in jail for no reason while waiting the end of the murder case. And on that she built her "oh, I suffered for no reason" story, which she repeats at every occasion.

The other part her defense was really good at selling in the US was the anti-American sentiment thingy. As if Sollecito was not even part of the trial.

I think it's quite likely that the two make it out of this story free. But that is only because the police did a terrible job at collecting and storing evidence. Their story however is full of incongruences, and the evidence on them staging the break-in is quite overwhelming.

Before the progress of forensic science investigators and prosecutors were really good at following the stories and spotting obvious incongruences. Now DNA rules supreme and basically unless you have overwhelming scientific proof no amount of obvious lieing makes any impact in court (this is often a good thing though).

So what was the motive, anyway? That's the part that I don't get.

The prosecution is pursuing a different motive in the second stage of the trial, but most likely it was a sex game gone wrong. There was probably no intention to kill but after something went wrong nobody felt like spending 15 years in jail because of it.

yeah, go read up on Silvio Berlusconi. I worked for Italians for over 5 years, I know how ridiculously corrupt their system is.

The Italian judicial system is super-hyper garantista, that is geared towards the defense. If you are familiar with the trials of Berlusconi you know how ridiculously long it took to finally find him guilty despite the monstrous amount of overwhelming evidence, including recordings of him basically admitting to the crimes.

In my opinion it is by far the best country to face charges if you are actually guilty.

This case has now really gotten to the point where it is only annoying, BEYOND entertainment.

* Zillions of Americans "coming out" and claiming they are experts on the Italian justice system. All of a sudden.

I bet that 70% of those people who "know" so many things about how the Italian justice system works wouldn't even be able to know where Italy is on a fricking map.

What does the avg. American know about the Italian justice system to be competent to judge how proper they work?

The entire case is nothing but a cheap tabloid media circus which has everything the media need, sex, murder etc.

People are divided into "she's innocent" or "she's guilty" based on NOTHING BUT subjective opinion or from what they read in a book.

Here are some facts, how I see it:

I read a lot about this case and many other "true crime" cases, serial killers, murderers etc. The majority of those killers, in particular serial killers aka Ted Bundy or those from the 60s (Hindley, Ian Bradley) are ENTIRELY INSANE. Those are people who murdered people and later on even after convicted would still make excuses or see themselves as heroes...or simply claim they are innocent even when ALL evidence speaks against them as clear as day. You cannot compare such people to "normal" people. They are often psychopaths and compulsive liars with an entirely messed up brain.

You cannot listen to such people and assume that what's coming out of their mouth is the truth and form an opinion based on that.

The problem here is that many people make exactly that....they form an opinion on books or interviews...or worse even based on the looks of Amanda Knox.

This is why this entire case is stupid and really starts to annoy me.

Tango,

You have some good points and yes I brought them up multiple times also on different places also.

* The attempt of crime-scene cleanup w/ a mop and cleaning supplies at 7:00am in the morning?? Who seriously believes that someone in their early twenties would get up at 6:00ish am because of a trivial water leak in the kitchen? Seriously....

* The staged break-in

* The framing

* The often bizarre and contradicting statement and lies. (Eg. about their whereabouts at the time of the murder where it was PROVEN that she lied initially...or how it was proven that a computer was accessed at a certain time where she claimed they slept etc...)

Most importantly:

Picture a 20 year old woman....someone was just brutally slaughtered/murdered IN THE ROOM RIGHT BESIDES YOURS in the house you live. What would a normal 20 year old's girl reaction be that a intruder/murderer rooms free somewhere out there, someone who broke into the house and slaughtered your room mate?

I can tell you that the normal reaction for pretty much anyone else would be to entirely freak out, end her trip instantly etc. I would freak out if I knew someone was murdered in my apartment complex and no-one knows why or who. And I am a grown up man. Now think about her reaction and most importantly ACTIONS...after something like that happened...

The problem is with the system...she was questioned for four days, with who knows how much sleep. At that point, I would confess to being the King of England or the Almighty God. Fact of the matter is, we're relying on the testimony of people who have ably demonstrated themselves to be a) incompetent or b) complete liars when it suits their purpose. It was a crazy sex game! Nah, Amanda was just jealous of Meredith! One of those. But Amanda definitely wanted her dead! For what? It sounds like they're throwing shit against the wall to get it to stick.
