When did Denon get back into Car Audio? It's been a WHILE since I was really into the scene, but they're lower end stuff back in the day was the same shizzle as JVC and they had that one 1000 model (top of the line unit) that had all the bells and whistles that this RF unit does... but that was back in 97 (I remember because the $1000 Denon unit was part of a 3-way shootout in CA&E along with the RF (built by Delco at the time before Sanyo took over) high end unit (8260 or something like that) and the first Kenwood Excelon top-of-line MASK reciever with RDS capability (owned it - halfway decent). Is this some sort of 'leftover' from that Denon model that RF bought and rebadged?

Skywhr, that's awesome! That's the unit I'd buy if I could afford it and wanted the amps in the head unit (I'd get the 7995 on clearance if I wanted outboard amps - what a price).

Do you get the full Alphine warranty buying from Etronics? Did you buy a changer or XM tuner from them? Just wondering if they have any package deals.

Also, any tips on installation (especially when it's not supposed to fit your car)?

I have always found Sounddomain to be very expensive. I would for sure check around.

Sounddomain is usually very expensive, except for clearances.

Personally, I think this deck is gorgeous. It's all opinion.

And Denon never stopped making the deck, they just stopped selling it in the US, because they priced themselves out of the market.

Sound Domain isn't terrible. Their prices beat Crutchfield or any store you can go to locally hands down. This does look like a good deal, but they are right if you're looking for something with an onboard amp this thing is way more than you'll ever need. True audiophile catnip here.
I also use the DEH-7500MP from pioneer and got it for about $250 online. It's got mp3 decoding, multiple rca outs for subs or other amps, the screen is cool too displays full animated clips and the newer ones let you create your own shrort clips for screensavers on the head unit. You just download the pioneer software and capture it from an avi or mpg, then burn it to a cd and the deck will read it and load it into memory! Pretty cool huh? I've got pron on mine, heehee!
I'm still using the factory 6x9's in My Honda Accord because they sound pretty decent and I replaced the front speakers which were like 3.5's with a pair of Pioneer 3's cause they fit and one of the original 3.5's had blown out. For a sub I'm running a dual coil JL 12W4 off of a Cadence A5-HC Class D amp. For 600 watts at 1ohm it sounds pretty darn good.

It is amazing that on a forum of computer hardare enthusiasts, we get posters that don't understand the car audio enthuist market. Most people would think we are nuts for tweaking our computers, overclocking, etc. and I get the same feeling from some of the posters here. True audiophiles don't care about mp3 playback, they wouldn't even think about listening to the degraded sound quality of a compressed audio format. An audiophile would not care about bells and whistles, on board audio, etc. Just as many of us at anadtech don't want onboard video, modems, etc. We want the best of everything.

As for no high end audio in the car audio realm? What about Mcintosh? There is plenty of hi-fi stuff, you just won't find it at Circuit City.

Actually, Haze03, I was about to ask if anyone can recommend a good site to discuss car audio since I am not an audiophile. I have a factory system I've been trying to replace for years but don't have the money to and when I have, I've hit roadblocks. I would just like to listen to CDs in my car w/out my damn discman. I used to want to be an audio snob, but I finally caved and started compressing my music for work (mp3s on the laptop) and travel (MD player for $35 now entertains me on my walks from my car to office in the mornings and on trips). When I put a new head unit in my car, I will get MP3 capability just to have it in case I want to throw in a big compilation disc for a road trip. There's so much road noise in my Alero that I've decided I won't notice the difference.

But anyhow, not all geeks are audiophiles. But some of us try. . .

So, back to the off-topic question I was going to ask. Can anyone recommend a forum for car audio discussion/help? Thanks.

Or Nakamichi, Adcom (are they still in the car audio game? their amps use to be killer). Though there are plenty of car stereo only companies that would blow home audio companies out of the water. Such as Rainbow and Brax.

Is this suppose to be a rebadged Z1? The specs don't match up. And it's not an R1 'cause the R1 has an onboard amp. The Z1 is better on paper, 24bit burr browns vs 20bit and does it have Denon's AL24 processing chip? The face is slightly different, though that could have been easily done at the factory to hide the fact it's a rebadge. If it truly is a Denon in crappy RF clothing, then it's a steal. Used Z1's sell for $600+ and are only available at stores in Japan.

To reiterate my question from before, do you get an Alpine-recognized warranty if you buy from Etronics?

I certainly would before ordering. Just wondered if Alpine was strict like that. When I was shopping for a HT receiver, I know Denon was very specific about only honoring warranties from "approved" vendors. Some others were, too. I'll check their website before I take the plunge. As it is now, I can't install it in my car anyhow. "Too deep" Crutchfield says. So they won't give me the kit and directions with it.

Edit Thanks, Haze03. I hadn't seen your post when I started mine. Sorry.

This is an awsome unit. If you think that anything by Alpine would be better, you have no business messing with high end equipment, and deserve the crappy quality you get.

BTW I like the look

Fah!

Sounddomain was down earlier today...that's why the link may be dead.

That link is to the Titanium colored head...take the ti off of the url and you go to the all aluminum head. IMO this is one of the best looking heads on the market. No frills...just brushed aluminum. Gives it an air of seriousness and robustness that is lost in today's units that look like they are designed by 5 year olds with some crayola crayons.

This is not a R or Z1 - it is in fact a rebadged Denon A1N - the predecessor to the Z1 (the other denons can be found at www.redmountainaudio.com). The history of these units goes as follows (forgive me if there is a mistake in the story, this is off memory and is from a very reliable second hand source). These units were actually for sale in Japan. They didn't sell well b/c you can pay a few bucks more and get the real deal (Denon). If you understand the difference between the Japanese market and the US market, the posts here (while disturbing IMO, make total sense).

The Japanese market realizes high quality and is willing to pay for it. A good example is the Alpine lineup - In Japan, the 98XX series come with a Toslink optical output on them....the only heads in the US with that distinction...the 7996, D900 and 7990!!! In addition, even Pioneers SQ setup in the states (DEQ-P9 and DEX-P9) are not the cream of the crop in Japan where the Carrozoria (sp?) lineup, as it's called, features enhanced components, with an enhanced price tag of course.

The Japanese recognize a quality product, and are willing to pay for it. In north america, we want a huge list of features (that can often degrade sound quality), we want it to be shiny and "pretty", light up like Times Square, and we don't care if it breaks in two years. This is why you get all the requests for on board amplifiers (yuck), MP3 (double yuck) and the like.

The bottom line is that the units never sold (even Phoenix Gold had a few rebadged but scrapped the idea) and they were offered to US distributors at a reduced price. Most of RF doesn't even know that this head unit existed - or at least didn't until just recently. Until this deal, you had to get someone from Japan to import it for you. The tuner was reworked for US frequencies, and basically Sounddomain bought up a ton of these units and are clearing them out at crack head prices.

I'll be the first to say, this unit is not for everyone. I wouldn't recommend it to most general consumers because they can't/won't appreciate the quality of this unit. But to the discerning ear, and to those who just want a transport with a built in DAC, this is one of the buys of the century!!!

From an audiophile standpoint, it's a true competition piece...

One thing to consider is that this unit comes with no "cage" so it will only work in a custom installation (or if you have a Nissan or Toyota) an ISO installation.

As far as sounddomain is concerned...I've had good and bad experiences. First off...they are an Authorized dealer for most everything they sell. Call the MANUFACTURER and ask about warranties before you buy elsewhere. For example, SD is the only autorized Image Dynamics dealer on the net. They sell Xtant authroized as well. These are high end brands that you can't find else where at great prices. If you are happy with the crutchfield brands (I'm not real happy that they sold out and started stocking auto accessories) then stick with them. Crutchfield is a great company who provides good service as well.

Saving a few $$ on an item, then it breaks and you find out you have no warranty coverage....well, this is something I've never understood!! Because of the internet, people have become so price concious that they have failed to realize that when you buy an item, you are paying more for then what comes in the box!!

I would not call sounddomain expensive by any stretch if you consider the value added by their warranty service. They will also price match other dealers and they are not a fly by night operation.

Hope that clears things up, sorry for the long post. I'm in no way affiliated with any of these companies. Just trying to spread some truths about the unit from an audiophile's standpoint.

So that you don't have to look through my long ass post...it's an A1N. A used Z1 goes for around 1000 to 1500 in the states and the R1's are around 600 used as well...

If you compare the faceplates on the RF and the Denon - they are virtually identical. The only difference is the button layouts.

again, www.redmountainaudio.com for photos on the R1, Z1 and the changer that is the "current" denon lineup. As for redmountain...I'm not sure if they are still importing or not...

I bought from crutchfield, go to alpine1.com to see who they recognize as authorized dealers
I have bought from none authorized dealers before and had no problem with warranty stuff.

This is still an ugly deck

that thing sucks... my alpine 7995 is much better... there are some good 9-series kenwood that are 6v... the alpine 9815 is really good too...

btw... an head unit without a built-in amp is better.. less distortion, clearer sound... it's basically the same concept as a receiver for a home theater system... talking high end here... then again, my last 2 systems were both over 1000 watts rms... =)

my system right now:
alpine cda-7995
6.5" polk momo components
6x9 eclipse 2 way
1998 orion amp @ 400watts rms
1999 fosgate amp @ 400 watts rms
and unfortunately, 2002 jbl amp @ 500 watts... the older amps are always better...
and dual 10" alpine type r subs...
optima yellow top battery
2 1 farad capacitors...

and a decent place for car audio is etronics... then again, better to go there for us in nyc... can haggle better... by comparing them to uncle steve's on canal street....

I actually contemplated buying the 7995 but I didnt want to buy an amp right away. No I didnt buy a changer or XM receiver for my 9815 yet.

My set up includes
cda-9815 alpine HU
pair of infinity kappa 60.5cs

pair of infinity kappa 42.5i

4 JL 6W0's

Alpine MRV-F340 amp for the highs

Alpine MRP-M350 for the subs

this is all inside a 02 nissan frontier

I've heard awesome things about RF amps but nothing good about their HU's considering this is a DENON rebage I am sure that the quality and features are there but it is unattractive and doesnt do what most buyers want, it is a COMPETITION deck and the people who want to listen to music on their way to work or out on the town far out weigh the people putting $12,000 into their cars for the sound and look of competition.
