here

seriously, this is one of the best headunits out there. no amp onboard though. its a rebadged denon headunit.

i dont know a lot about it other than if you want the top of the line headunit, you get that one.

yes, it is better than eclipse, alpine, sony, kenwood, everything

I'm not familiar with denon car receivers, but if it is, that's pretty cool. Too bad it doesn't decode mp3's too, otherwise I might be tempted.

That does look pretty sweet, although I would like a built in amp and MP3 decoder...

Can anyone recommend a very good head unit with mp3 decoding and an onboard amp? I'm looking for something to go into my MR2 Spyder, which scarcely has room for the driver, no less a seperate amp

Thats an ugly headunit. I'd say just get a decent headunit, a set of component speakers and a good amp to drive them. That would make any decent headunit sound great.

Check out Alpine headunits, there are a number of models that plays MP3s, and they can be had for a good price on eBay.

I've been very happy with my Pioneer unit - the DEH-7500MP. I have had two Pio units, and both have been reliable. It offers a good deal of adjustments, and a pretty full feature set. Check it out... about $250 online, or $350 if you go Crutchfield or another "authorized" retailer.

lets just say, that headunit. the SQ from it is amazing, it has balanced line outputs, just about every option you could ever possibly want.

as for other good ones, alpine, from ikesound.com nice stuff.

Well, between the constraints on speaker placement in an automobile and the typical acoustics of the passenger space, all the "high end" specs of this unit become overkill, IMO. What you gain in accurate electronics, you lose in the listening environment of a car. I'd venture to guess that there would be no noticeable difference between this HU and my Alpine 9827 (~$200-$250) using the same external amp and speakers in most vehicles. I say save your money and get an HU that will play CD-R's/CD-RW's, MP3's, display CD/MP3 text, control Sat radio, and whatever else you'll actually use. Just my 2.

Look, I've been doing car audio competitions for the past decade+ and let me tell you, for the right set of people, this head unit (well, at least the Denon version) is heaven. Some of the purest sonics I've heard. If you're looking for a casual bazooka tube & coaxials, don't bother, get a crappy Sony that'll die in a year. This is for high end competitions where every little bit of help counts.

MP3 decoding? Not needed on this unit. MP3 is inherantly a degraded signal, audible or not. When going up against RTAs, being audible doesn't matter.

Onboard amp? Anyone shopping for this player has NO need for an onboard amp. In fact, in this bracket, you're purposely looking for head units without amps.

Detachable faceplate? in a few years, the signal degrades from normal wear & tear. Not needed.

This, some Genesis, Brax, or DLS amps, some Rainbow Reference, CDT Eurosports, or Seas Lotus comps, and a nice 13w7 or IDMax, and you have yourself a winner.

That pretty much sums it up. But D@MN that HU is ugly!

If it is a rebadged Denon..the sq on this thing should be awesome. Like someone said...if your looking for a good deck, you want one without a built in amp. TEEZLE is right...that is one ugly ass deck.

I'm pretty sure that the higher end Alpine mp3 decks do not have an amp built-in. I'm not sure about all the entry level ones.

Most all the mid-level and up Alpine head units play MP3 and starting with the CDA-98XX series, WMA as well. The exception is their top-of-the-line CDA-7990 F#1 competition-level head unit.

I'd really like an Alpine HU, but they're too deep for my Alero dash according to Crutchfield's information and I don't know enough about installing car audio to make any neccesary modifications myself.

its a great deal, and if it had 3 sets of rca preouts, i'd be all over - but i really don't want to have to buy a crossover as well as a new head unit, and since i'm running front/mids, rears and sub channels, makes it at least more difficult w/ this thing

This headunit is miles above any entry level headunit from Alpine, Eclipse, or Pioneer. The SQ difference will be noticeable. If compared to mid-upper highend units, it might be better to get one with more features. I chose Alpine because of the time correction, XM capabilities, MP3, etc. If you want something simple that'll just play CD's though, this would be perfect. Also if you compete and have outboard EQ's and crossovers, then look no further.

I have an alpine head with detachable face that plays mp3s. It is a fantastic unit and even has a really great built in eq. stick with alpine.

Might as well go with the 9811. For a few more bucks, you get better looking unit and the flip down version.

It's too bad none of the real high end audio companies get into car audio. The problem is that the car audio world is driven by SPL's rather than sound quality. Most of those "pro" systems are loud enough to blow out glass, but sound like crap. Rockford Fosgate is one of those SPL brand names. Sounds like crap, but gets loud. If it's a rebadged Denon, that's better, but in the audio world, Denon is mid-fi at best.

That being said, most hi end companies know that the three most important things with reproducing audio faithfully is location, location, location. Cars are so limiting, that's probably why more high end companies don't get involved. This and the boom cars or people that are just into mp3's, which are horrible as far as sound quality goes.

Speaking of mp3's, I think it's crap that these companies want to sell their music direct for download for .99¢ each. That's no cheaper than buying an album and the quality is inferior, so why would anyone go for this? Well.. With most pop music, it doesn't matter anyway because it's recorded so poorly.

Anyway...

Sal

PS. That head unit is pretty damn ugly. Heh
