This seems ultra hot to me.

Get Linksys WRT54GL or Buffalo WHRG54S

click here for the purchase page

In a campaign to increase internet use this company is selling subsidised wireless routers but you must agree to SHARE the connection with neighbors!!

This seems awesome

These routers are $50 on newegg and are among the best-reviewed routers too.

Only have to share for 12 months

for the linksys at newegg

for the buffalo at newegg

edit: $8 shipping charge to Ohio. Still seems hot - $13 for a $50 wireless router (and a quality one at that)

Seems a little scary...if someone else is doing bad things via your connection you'll get the police knocking on your door.....

I don't think this is very hot. In fact, it sounds like a bad deal to me. If you are patient, you will always be able to find a nice wireless router for around that price after rebates. I got my Linksys wireless router for +$5 AR, including tax and shipping.

So basically OD/Linksys paid me $5 to use the router and I don't have to share my connection with anyone or sign up for any extra service.

Its not a matter of sharing it with your neighbors which I am sure a good number of people here have ones they like. It is a matter of someone driving down the road and jumping on your connection... I don't know anyone who would want it open like that...

You also agree to use THEIR proprietary firmware on the router. This will not let you "change WEP key" as someone suggested. It also very likely "phones home". And on top of all of that, it very likely violates your ISP's TOS, which could get your account cancelled/throttled and/or could get you in trouble (e.g. you get a cease-and-desist from the MPAA with your IP address, but you didn't download anything illegal, someone else did through your shared wireless connection)..

Not hot at all.

After you register the router with them can't you just flash the firmware to something else (like DD-WRT)? They are using flashable routers...

Yes, but then they have a right to charge you according to their website. You have to register the router on the FON network, and then leave it that way for 12 months...

But the router is flashable back to original firmware, or HyperWRT or DD-WRT or whatever.

Someone's gonna hack this sh!tty firmware. Mmmm I would flash it to HyperWRt and they can suck it. They can't really tell ur letting other users in unless they hav ea built in proggy that reports who's logged in. More importantly, how would they know? We run like 6 systems in our apartment, so go figure... It "appears" a lot of ppl are on

Maybe as one person on slashdot suggests that with enough of a mesh, Google could run the fiber on it and disconnect from ISPs....

Nice for the conspiracy theorists

Hmmm. I wonder if the "I have a shared wireless router" defense will become viable now.

FON provides clear benefits for ISPs:

Generate additional revenue through sharing Aliens? revenues

Provide free WiFi roaming and a social networking platform at no extra cost

Differentiate their service offer from the competition

Increase broadband penetration especially in small businesses

Use of the FON platform to launch wireless services

Reduce churn and attract new customers by benefiting of the brand association with FON

All this at no extra costs for the ISP!

FON is not about Free Internet for all!

FON increases broadband penetration

FONeros have to have broadband connection to share it

Alternatively, they must pay for usage, and prices are designed to avoid cannibalization of ISP products

FON enhances the value of ISP network by offering global connectivity in all FON Hotspots at no cost for the ISP or the user

FON prevents anonymous access as every session is registered and trackable

If you are an ISP and would like to discuss the benefits and opportunities of reaching a strategic agreement with FON, please contact us at isp@fon.com

the firmware is flashable. no need to be hacked. it's just that there's this heartbeat script that phones home telling them that you're connected to the FON network. someone's written a script to do that already to imitate the heartbeat.

I said ****** it, and just ordered one. Even if the heartbeat script doesnt work, you can still use DD-WRT and have two different SSIDs. The FON service would be active, and you would have an encrypted SSID for your own use. No one can use your network without having a FON username/pass, and if you arent right in the city, almost no one would use it anyway. I'm in a secluded place so it would be fine for me.

The same way you won't know your neighbor hacked your WEP key in a couple minutes.
