I haven't applied yet, but I doubt it, since it says it's a $30 "promotional certificate" which means you can't combine it with anything.

My only concern though is that I keep hearing multiple cards are bad, especially when you are building your credit. I've read advice saying that having only one card is best... what do you guys think?

When building a credit line, it's not good to pay off in full every month either. They look for steady payments.

What do you mean by steady payments? Why would credit cards NOT want timely payments in the full amount? Are you suggesting that I build debt in order to help my credit?

Here is my experience. Last November I obtained one of these cards and got a $30 GC. That card is now the default cc on both my account and my wife's account at Amazon. She got an email this morning offering this deal so she went ahead and applied online. After completing the information the screen said it would be 2 to 4 weeks for approval and noted that the $30 promotional certificate was in the account and would be activated if the cc was approved. So she went into her account and put a new item in a shopping cart and guess what...the $30 promotional certificate showed up in the shopping cart when she went to check out!! (This was just moments after applying!!) So for those who already have an Amazon credit card, this may be a way to get a quick additional $30 promotional certificate even if the second card is not yet (or for that matter is never) approved.

Think about this...The credit card companies don't make any money off you if you don't carry a balance. If you pay off your card, in full, every month, it doesn't do them any good. If you want them to "like" you, pay off your balance in full most months, but occasionally leave $10 (or something) on your card that will earn interest. Yeah, it will cost you a little interest, but the credit card company will love you forever! Then pay off the card the following month. Repeat this every once and a while; it won't hurt your credit. Actually...they would really love you forever if you racked up tons of debt. But DON'T do that!!

Am I correct in what I just said?? Anyone have any comments? I'm planning on doing exactly what I just said this month.

how about cancellation terms ? can you get the $30 and cancel the next month ? (I know it probably won't look too good on your credit but... )

actually i've been using my amazon visa quite a bit there. think about this: you get 3 pts/dollar spent. at 25000 pts you get a $25 gift certificate. that's ~3% back if you use that card soley at Amazon, or ~1% elsewhere (comparable to dividend savings, discover, etc. cept it is for a GF not cash).

BUT, i've placed 3 orders now for ~160 that were both get paid AR deals. so that's 500 points on my way for nothing. yeah, 8000 dollars at amazon is going to be tough but i'll stick it out, it's not like there are fees or anything

The first statement definitely is not true. Credit card companies make money every time you purchase something. Each time you do a transaction with a retailer, the retailer pays the credit card company a small fee.

As for the idea that your credit rating will be BETTER if you pay off your credit sporadically, this idea seems to confuse a couple of different concepts. Credit rating reflects how great or little a credit risk you are. It answers the question: "Can I trust this person to pay back the money I lend them?" . . . NOT "Is this person going to back the money I lend them in a way that maximizes my profit?"

I am fortunate to have excellent credit. Here's the sure-fire way to build it: Every time you borrow money on your credit card, pay it all back on time. Always do this, and you'll be golden.

This practice is simpler than gaming the system, likely no less effective, and it also acts as a safeguard to ensure that you don't spend beyond your means.

I'm not a credit expert, but those are my thoughts on the question you raised.

Got my card yesterday in the mail at my moms house. She verified there was an amazon cc, so I'll pick it up today to see what it says about the $30 coupon.

That's just plain nuts. You build credit by being responsible, which includes making timely payments, watching your credit report, and fixing anything that comes up on it, not by leaving a balance on your credit card.

I think you need to redo your math.
25000 pts = $8333.33 spent
$25/$8333.33 = 0.003 or 0.3%, not 3%.
Nevertheless, this is a good deal for those who need a visa card.

You should be careful when applying for a credit card because it will lower your FICO score which will affect you a lot (by raising the interest rate you get charged) if you are planning to make a large purchase in the near future (car, house etc.). Just a FYI - this is not free money.

You should never carry a balance on your credit card - you will pay huge interest charges that will just pile up if you do not pay the card off in full every month. Credit is not free money - it is a loan (with high interest rates) that must eventually be repaid.

The best way to build a good credit history is to get one credit card and pay it off in full every month. If you can't pay it off in full every month - you are in 95% of the time, spending too much money.

When I charge something to this card I have to pay it off? Damn. I thought it was free money.

yes, you get 3 points for every dollar spend at amazon or 1 point elsehwere. you get $25 amazon 'money' for every 2500 points. this is not as good as toys r us visa. i got around $20 toy r us goofy money for around $1000 i charged to visa. it does not charge taxes on top of these goofy money. we can collect $20 per month if we use visa to pay for every bill we get - food, phone, utilities, cable modem, gas.
