I recently purchased a DVD that was part of Amazon's pricing games / mispricing error / pricing experiment / something else depending on which CSR you ask. Apparently I have been ripped off, and Amazon apologized by email. The apology goes like this:

Dear potential Class Action Lawsuit participant,

Thank you for your recent purchase. As you are aware, our market-droids recently came up with a plan for ripping off our customers without them being aware of it. As we are desperately out of touch with public opinion, and woefully ignorant of illegal trading practices, we decided to implement their plan. Unfortunately someone spotted this and we're now in some really deep sh!t.

In an effort to place some spin on this situation, we're refunding the money that we ripped you off for. Not only that, but we promise that if you notice us ripping you off in the future, we'll refund that money too.

We value your business and appreciate your trust; after all, without your complete, total and unsuspecting trust we'd never have a snowball's chance in hell of pulling off anything as underhanded as this. We hope that you will continue shopping with us. Really. We need your business, because we're hemorrhaging cash faster than we can possibly hope to sustain in the long term, and sooner or later our Venture Capitalists are going to notice. Please help us protect their false hopes by maintaining your misguided loyalty to us. What would we ever do without customers like you?

Hugs and kisses, Amazon.com

I think everyone who buys at Amazon should use their review feature to post the price that they paid.

*Grin* That was too funny. It'd be interesting if they had sent anything like that. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be illegal, and the most that can happen is they piss off a lot of people..

But they review your review before posting it. Actually I mentioned the price in my review once, and the amount was removed.

Discriminatory pricing is indeed illegal. Amazon discriminates on the basis of which browser you use, and whether you use cookies.

Try doing the same thing based on people's religion or skin color, and you'll find yourself in court faster than you can say "damn Buddhist great person".

Wagner...

Discriminating certain groups in certain situations is illegal...not discrimination itself. I can choose to not sell, change prices, or any other such activity based on most anything (houses and other real property do not allow some discrimination). Where it is illegal is in cases of race, religion, sex, age, or other such groupings, and even then it may not be illegal. Ever try to get a membership at an all female health club? Under your world, I guess people who don't use coupons are discriminated against. How about those that aren't travel agents not getting travel agent discounts? Hey...I get free stuff from work cause I work there...maybe my place of employment is discriminating against the other 250 million Aamericans that don't work at my place of employment. Please, don't try to blow this thing way out of proportion. If these vendors didn't do something to discriminate...we wouldn't get any better prices than the shmucks out there paying full retail. I agree it's shady, but the cat's out of the bag now and the market will react to it. They may continue these practices. If they do, and you don't like it....buy from somewhere else.

I do agree with humerous tone of your original message though
