Amazon has a good deal on the Motorola A630 for T-Mobile. Any idea what the service plan covers? I know that they have an unlimited data plan for the Sidekick II that is only $20/mo. extra on top of your voice plan charges, but the A630 can apparently be used for an internet connection for a laptop as well (via Bluetooth, I think?). I'm very curious to know how fast the upload and download speeds are, and what it costs to use it with a laptop like that. If I could do that for $20/mo. extra, that would be a smoking deal for me. Also, Amazon is selling the phone for much less than T-Mobile is on their own website ($50 AR for Amazon vs. $300 with no rebates available direct from T-Mobile). Even the price before rebates is $100 less at Amazon.

Anyone know? Also, my laptop doesn't have Bluetooth support built-in, so what would I need to support that? I'm guessing a PC Card Bluetooth adapter of some kind?

Connecting to the net via an A630 would use GPRS. Real world speed for a GPRS Internet connection is a little faster than dial up but definately not anywhere near the typical cable/DSL connection.

You missed the best deal of all, you can get a t-mobile sidekick 2 for free plus $25 in your pocket. Was posted a couple of months ago here, but worth mentioning that it's still available.

Update: Amazon just dropped their price on the A630 again, and by a significant amount. The A630 used to be $200 - $150 rebate = $50 AR, but now it's $120 - $150 rebate = -$30 AR, which is insane to me considering that T-Mobile sells the same phone for $300, and there are no rebates available from them at all.

Another thing to consider, however, is that the Amazon rebates apparently take forever to get back. You have to send a copy of your second month's bill showing payment for the first month, and then you have to be active on the account for at least six months total to get the rebate. According to the sales girl at T-Mobile, they have no idea whatsoever how Amazon can afford to sell the phones at those prices with those kind of rebates, and they've gotten a lot of complaints from people about never receiving their rebates. I'm not entirely sure whether I believe her story as far as how hard it is to get the rebate checks, since she obviously has a vested interest in me buying the phone directly from her instead because she wants her commission on the sale. She did tell me that they are more than willing to pricematch to other authorized retailers of their phones, even including consideration of the after-rebate price. They won't pricematch the entire amount of the rebate, but she indicated that "We will usually meet you half-way."

So if you're nervous about having that much money in limbo, you can talk to someone at one of the company-owned T-Mobile stores and see what they'll do for you. She also indicated that they will do in-store trade-ins on defective or broken phones, etc. if you buy directly from them, but that you'd have to mail off the phone to have it fixed if you get it from Amazon. If I can get them to offer me the phone for $50 out the door, I think I'll forgo the extra $80 to not have the hassle.

DONT FORGET the NOKIA 6230 from Cingular. Its FAR, you just need to pay 149 up front. I got this phone, and is much better than those LG, Sanyo, Motorola, and Panasonic phones. I have always love the reliability of NOKIA phones. just my 2 cents.

Final update: I went to the T-Mobile store to get them to try to pricematch to Amazon, and they wouldn't even match Amazon's before-rebate price, feeding me a sob story about how much Amazon gets paid per activation (about $300?!?) and that they get better prices on the phones from the manufacturer... wah, wah, wah. If any of that is true, it's their own fault for paying them too much. What a crock. That is completely different than what they told me before. The lowest they were willing to go was $200. They also changed their story on the rebates, now saying that it isn't that people never get their rebates, it's just that a lot of people forget to send them in because it takes so long to do it. Don't waste your time with the stores. Just order it straight from Amazon and be done with it.
