Amazon loses as a Competitor will just come in who will abide by the Law and not use Its' Customers as Pawns.

Sorry, buzzz.... wrong answer. Amazon's customers are not losing anything, nor are they being used as pawns or anything else. If anything, the affiliates are getting jerked around. In the end, the state loses revenues and some jobs, while Amazon loses nothing. Pretty stupid move by the usual tax-and-spend mob if you ask me.

Where the heck was the media to cover this idiocy before it passed??

I think NY is one of the few states that forces Amazon to collect sales tax so now when I buy from amazon i get a 8% or something like that tax, it's awesome. In fact, it goes very nicely on top of the $6k I paid last year in property taxes on a house worth only $200k. Win!

This is a totally different issue. Many states require amazon to collect sales tax as they have a physical nexus (presence) in the state.

This is a completely different issue altogether as it's trying to apply the same principles because you reside in the state as an affiliate and have a link on your page to Amazon.

TOTALLY different from a constitutional aspect based on previous rulings. That's why it's called "The Amazon Tax". Go Amazon!

Basically Amazon/Overstock are telling the states - "If you want to make it that difficult to do business in your state, then we simply won't do it". GO AMAZON! Sorry affiliates as you feel the pain directly but blame your state, not Amazon and other online businesses.

I fail to see how this is a liberal/conservative Democrat/Republican issue.

in general the conservatives have been for internet tax free laws while the progressives grasp for every dime they can claim as their own.

This is just like how the credit card reform act was supposed to help consumers, and instead it forced the credit card companies to preemptively slash credit lines, raise interest rates, and start charging annual fees on many previously free accounts. Now CO loses out on the state income taxes the ex-Amazon associates would have owed and their citizens' income is reduced, further weakening their economic standing. Brilliant!

I suspect Amazon did an analysis of the amount of business that the affiliates bring in, and decided it wasn't worth it for them.

Amazon isn't ceasing doing business in the state. Its only ceasing doing business through their affiliates, but they are still selling to customers that go directly to their site.

Colorado is one of those states that a couple of years ago reported it spent $800 Million on treating and providing healthcare for illegal aliens.

Dumb is as dumb does, and apparently the doing goes on in Colorado. :awe:
Well, technically every state provides health care for illegal aliens. It's actually illegal to turn them away.

Here's what Amazon says:
Items Shipped to New York State
Effective June 1, 2008, Amazon.com LLC will begin collecting sales tax on items shipped to destinations within the State of New York as New York has enacted a new law requiring out-of-state sellers to collect and remit sales tax based on advertising. Amazon has filed a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of this provision. However, as required by the law, we must still begin collecting New York sales tax beginning on that date.

way to go amazon. it would be so much easier to have a flat internet tax paid to the shipping destinations state. actually it would be so much easier not to have to tax it at all if these freakin' polititians could balance the budget instead of giving themselves raises and benefits.

I'm not following... they decide that since they're forced to "voluntarily collect tax" in CO they close them down but do nothing for NY since it's required by law to collect? BTW I thought that lawsuit lost traction over a year ago.

When I read the title I knew that Techs would be one of the first to post, in favor of more taxes of course.

I strongly disagree.
Those states are out of control with their intrusive and abusive laws.
Here's a radical idea for you: why can't those state politicians run a balanced budget with some savings and maybe even lower taxes?
Since they can't, can I get one of those budgets where I spend far more than I make and let someone else pay for it?

regards,
DJ

Techs is in favor of intrusive and abusive laws as long as they were put in place by Democrats.

normally im against anything that benefits government. but this situation with amazon is ridiculous. why the heck shouldnt they have to pay taxes like any other company. i know, i know, it is the buyers responsibility to pay the taxes, but that system is just not fair to other companies that actually have locations within a state, who pay taxes, employ citizens and provide services to the residents. amazon has put almost every new bookstore out of business in my area, largely im sure due to the pricing advantage theyve had for their entire existence because they dont charge tax. im for low/no taxation, but somehow the laws need to be made more fair. and i dont want amazon to have a monopoly on ecommerce.

Wait, you think that Amazon's books are cheaper because they don't pay taxes? Their technical books are usually 30 to 40 percent cheaper than Barnes and Nobles, just how much do you think taxes are?

Good for amazon. There are just too many spenders in government. Democrats want to spend. Republicans want to spend but a little less. When will politicians stop spending taxpayer money like its their own?
I wish they would spend it like their own money... Then they would think about things a bit more (or at all).

amazons prices on new technical books are basically the same as other websites. yes brick and mortar are usually a little more. however most books sold arent $150 technical books. they are cheap books. lets say a books sell for 18 in a bookstore and amazon sells it for 12. if an amazon customer has to pay tax (1.50) and shipping (3.50) their final cost is 17. some bigger bookstore like bn have 10% discount as well. so the price is basically the same, except for an amazon book you have to wait a week to get it. which would you buy? it would be at least a toss up for most people. amazon wouldnt be nearly as dominant and they certainly wouldnt be as profitable (they arent making money selling that book for 12 even with quantity discounts) and they wouldnt be putting every other bookstore out of business. whats is wrong with the largest business paying its fair share of tax? im actually glad amazon is shutting down in some states. that way companies that are willing to pay their fair share will pop up and make the market more competitive. right now amazon is the only decent bookselling site which allows them to overcharge sellers

you know what company i hate even more than amazon? ebay. i hope every state goes after them, rather than raising my taxes or giving me more traffic tickets. i hope someone asks that filthy meg whitman what her position on that issue is in the ca governors race

I love this comment, b/c it makes sense once you see this story:

http://www.ktvu.com/news/22791610/detail.html

wish the video feed was up, should be there somewhere...

So, she basically invites reporters to "press event" where she tours a rail and shipping depot, but the campaign bars all media from the tour.

then, media is never allowed to ask questions, after her and union boss make a statement saying that they are officially in bed together. Cameras are actually forced out of the room by MEG'S CAMPAIGN!

EPIC disaster campaign meltdown!!
