How recent does your purchase need to be to qualify for the gold box? The last thing I bought from them was Empire Earth on Dec 29, 2001

The last time I ordered was in late November/early December of 2001 and my Gold Box works fine. It stopped showing up for quite sometime, but I cleared my cookies and kept trying. It finally showed up when I used another computer at a different location. Go figure. I don''t think there is a time limit on when you last ordered as long as you did indeed place an order at some point.

I also called them today and took them up on their
free 32mb smart media memory card offer. Actually I passed on
the 32 card and had them apply the credit of $29.99 from that
card to a larger 128mb Simple tech brand smart media card. Final price of $27.29
with free shipping for the 128mb. card.

Call Amazon at 1-800-201-7575 you'll need your order number
and they will connect you with the electronics Dept.
The only downside is only the Olympus smart media cards support the
panoramic feature on this camera while the Simple Tech brand
smart media card doesn't....or any other brand besides Olympus.

I called the number and just waited for the first customer service rep. who picked
up the phone after ignoring the choices in the voice menu. I briefly explained that I had heard about
the deal and that also my order had already shipped. He took my order number, verified my address
and asked me a security question (what was one of my previous orders from Amazon)

He then told me to hold while he transferred me to the Electronics dept. While
on hold he apparently told his colleague in Electronics the situation and 30 seconds
later I was talking to "Craig" from the electronics dept. The real issue here is that
the D-40 qualifies for the offer but they normally put the card in the same box as the
camera when shipping and it's suppose to be added at the time of you're original order.
However, I was told that they would make an exception this one time and give me
the deal. It may be a change in policy over the last day or two. I have heard similar
success on FW after posting there too. It's worth a shot YMMV

After receiving my D-40, I drove down to Fry's and bought a 128MB smartmedia for $40. Now I read the above posts, stating that I could have had the 32MB smartmedia for free. #@$%*! :|

I just got off the phone with Amazon. Instead of sending the smartmedia, they are going to credit my amex account $20!! Woo-Hoo!

Geez, I guess I am doing pretty good.

Are everybody else's D-40 pictures a little fuzzy? I took some pictures of mountains, and the sharpness just doesn't seem there. Not like my Fuji or Sony.

There should be no reason for them to NOT give you the card since any order during the last 30 days qualify!!

You might just request the electronics department during regular hours
and ask for "Craig" or "Mike". I have spoken with both and they
are aware of the deal and may give you the discount...

If your referring to the "cutout" rectangle on the top of the box right next to the bar-code, I believe that before you originally opened the box, the Olympus limited-warranty pamplet had been visible through that spot. This pamplet contains a sticker with the serial number of the camera on it. That hole was intentional, if you are referring to another hole, then I don't know, mine didn't have any others.

sorry, i just got a little scared 'cause i sold the camera on ebay and i said it was brand new. the fact that it wasn't sealed scared me a little.

Yea I thought it was suspicious too until I remembered seeing the serial number before opening the box. Repackaging the box after opening makes it seem like something was cutout.

Wow this camera is great! I have been playing with it for a week now. READ the online manual, let me say that again, READ IT This camera has so many features. My pictures are extremely nice on the Point and Shoot auto mode which is great for my daughter and wife, and I get to use all the manual adjustments. Too bad they couldn't have made a better manual just for the options, so I printed out certain pages from the CD manual when testing all the options and it's been a great help.
I bought my charger HERE after reading all the Digi camera sites and they recommend this charger. I also bought THIS camera bag at Amazon HERE.
I also went to this egay site from a battery post from another thread here and order 6 more 1800mAH batteries since I like using the LCD screen alot, you can find them HERE, just scroll through the list and find the Gold Peak 1800mAH ones for $1.70 each and flat shipping for $6 no matter how many you buy.
I got my Sandisk 128mb card for $44 at costco grand opening sale in Fredericksburg VA and now I just need to track down the AC charger and I am all set.
This Camera is so small too, I can take it with me anywhere...the 30sec video feature wow's all my neighbor's and family, I have to carry the billing invoice around to prove I bought this for $252, I am still in shock I got this deal...anyways happy snapping to all those who got lucky on this.
