Meh -- I just use Amazon preferred account/card on Amazon. That gives 5% back too (or financing on large purchases)
I'm missing what is special/new about this except the nominal percentages elsewhere.

The old one only had 3% back on Amazon. And it's pretty good to get 2% on restaurants and gas too.

Sweet. Old card members get their card automatically upgraded from 3% to 5%. I rarely buy from Amazon now but free 5% is good. For purchases other than Amazon, there are better cards to use than this.

That article is behind a paywall, is it talking about the Synchrony card?

Chase Amazon Visa gives 3% back and is a Visa card.

Synchrony Bank's Prime card is a "store card" that gives 5% back but is not usable anywhere else.

Amazon probably pays less in processing fees by cutting out Visa from the loop, and Synchrony makes their money from the suckers who carry a balance.

This is Chase Amazon Visa. They're bumping 3% to 5% at Amazon. So it's like having 5% quarterly categories Chase used to do with the Freedom card at the end of the year all year long. It's not good as the 5% Freedom since you earn UA points with Freedom. I don't like Amazon points since it's only good at Amazon or as cash but 5% is good.

Didn't get the upgrade on mine . I'm not the primary Prime account holder though, will have to see if my wife's account possibly got the 5%. Or some other leech on the family account.

Nice, I got the e-mail that they're upgrading my Chase Amazon.com card earlier today and that I should expect a new metal one in the mail. I got the card for the 3% back on Amazon exclusively so the bump to 5% is pretty nice!

I know for a fact that for the last several months my preferred account has been 5% back.
I don't have a physical card though -- I think those are different "offerings"

Yeah I guess this is what I was talking about -- the Synchrony "card" (it's an account really) is what I have been using. Sorry, I'm confusing things

Article is from USAToday and is not a paywall b/c I could access it.

Nice, I get upgraded automatically.

The Sallie Mae 5% card is dying in March. No more 5% Amazon from there, also need to find a card with good % for supermarkets (Amex doesn't count because a bunch of local/ethnic markets don't take it.)

Odd, the first time I clicked the link I got an unskippable subscriber login page. I just clicked it again and now it takes me straight to the story.

"Current Prime members with an existing Amazon Rewards Visa Signature card will be upgraded automatically to the new Prime metal card from Chase, as long as their Prime membership is eligible (criteria include having the card as your exclusive payment method in your Amazon wallet). And those customers will also begin earning 5% back now on their current card until the new one arrives."

What?! That's crap. So I have to delete my other credit cards to qualify? If I delete them now, I wonder if I can qualify, then just add them back.

Well shit, I just deleted my other cards, then noticed this card says 5% now and is shown as a gray color (one in my physical wallet is green).
I probably already qualified and deleted my other cards unnecessarily. Oh well, I rarely used them on Amazon anyway.

Mine is definitely not my only payment method and it upgraded fine automatically.

There is a process outlined on amazon's site to request upgrade if it doesn't happen automagically:

I'm only seeing 3% in my Amazon account. Maybe the 5% only applies if you're primary Prime account holder. I'm piggybacking off my sister's Prime for free shipping account. But I know she doesn't have Chase Amazon card.

You'll need to add your card to her account and then activate the upgrade from there.

At that point your account should have it.

Other possible solution have her add you as a household member.

One new feature I noticed is no foreign transaction fee now for the Amazon card. That's nice perk for no annual fee card. Most cards with no foreign transaction fee have annual fee except for Capital One cards.

Her Prime membership is the old family style. Not the new Prime one. So are you saying I can give her my credit card info and have her add it as payment option. Then activate the upgrade. Then delete the card info from her account? And then it's going to show 5% on my account instead of 3%?

I don't know if you can delete the card from her account, it may need to stay there.

There's a thread going on /r/churning including talk of workarounds for situations that didn't get the auto-upgrade. No mention however of being able to remove the card after that's complete. There is discussion of one prime account only being able to upgrade one card.

Read the thread and it seems non-primary users on old style 5 member Prime accounts are out of luck and stuck with 3%. The new 2 users only Prime account holders can use the household method to activate it on non-primary Prime account. It would've been nice to have the 5% but it's no big deal. I rarely shop and spend much money at Amazon now so the 2% difference is probably like $20 annual difference.

This will pay for half of Prime for me with the 2% difference. $5000 per year would be needed to break even.

Added my card to my wife's Amazon account, then switched the 5% to my card. Logged back in to my Amazon account, and shows 5% cashback on my card. Sweet.
