Got a chance to play around a little bit with my Fire Stick last night.
(I really think they should just remove the 'TV' from its official name, it differentiates it with the original, the name just simply rolls better and as a bonus it gives excellent innuendo opportunity - if you know what I mean)

Anyway, If I had gone from my Roku (first generation) box directly to the Stick without experiencing the original Fire TV, I don't think I would have noticed the 'small lag' that's been mentioned by several people. But alas, I do have a Fire TV, and as the person operating, because the situation is basically identical (user interface that you see, the feel of the remote in your hand, etc.), there's no way you're not going to naturally compare the experience, and the reality is that the Stick is very noticeably slower. Understandable, of course, considering the difference in hardware inside them and that the Stick is technically less than half the price of the Fire TV, so this is not necessarily a bad thing. On the other hand, it does give you a better appreciation of how truly awesome the original Fire TV is and how exceptionally fast and smooth it operates.

Other than that, the only somewhat negative thing I can say about the Stick is that connection feels really, really, slow with the wi-fi. From the automatic software update right when I turned it on (which took what felt like forever), to the buffering of streaming videos, either from the internet (Netflix, Prime Video) or locally stored video files (on SMB). The Stick actually crashed on Netflix the first time I ran it, and buffered a few times during the first video I watched through XBMC (more on this later). But then the subsequent videos I watched were smooth without any crashes. Note that this could very well be a problem with my wifi network, and that if anyone recall I've mentioned how heavily I am against streaming videos through wifi and always plug everything in whenever I can, so my opinion about this is a little biased to begin with.

Sideloading is exactly the same with the Fire TV. Back with the Fire TV I installed XBMC manually by following the instruction from Fire TV XBMC Wiki page, but this time I just downloaded a helper application that does the same so instead of typing stuff I just had to click some buttons, adbFire (don't forget to allow sideloading and debugging from the Stick's settings). Installation of XBMC 13.2 Gotham with adbFire worked great and everything went smooth without a problem (note that a lot of the features on adbFire only works for the original Fire TV on a certain firmware version). I do like the standard Fire TV UI, so I left it alone, and had XBMC run as an application through a 'dummy app' with the 'llama trick' , which is how I setup my original Fire TV.

Everything else, the experience is exactly the same with the Fire TV, installing apps like Plex, etc. I haven't had a chance to install/play any games yet, but I usually play puzzle-type, no hardware demanding, games like Quell, etc. on it anyway, so I don't see how it will be a problem.

In summary, this does what I expected it to be, and I don't see any reason why anyone wouldn't call this a great steal at $19.99 during the Prime pre-order promo period. At $39.99 retail price, personally I would think a little bit. If it's going to be my only streaming device, I'd probably rather pay twice that price and get the original Fire TV (Amazon frequently discounted and give out promos so you should be able to get it for ~$80 or less), but for the second or third device at your home, the Stick is definitely a great option.

Got both of mine too. I wish I had read about the FireTV limitations with Plex. I largely use my Chromecast for plex streaming and was hoping to replace that with this. It's just more convenient to sometimes use a remote, instead of starting everything from the phone.

For those that don't know... Plex on FireTV doesn't support Dolby or AC3. You're stuck with 2 channel stereo

Aww man :'(

I wonder if a sideloaded version of Plex would resolve that issue...

Really? How much buffering are you experiencing? Mine is as zippy as my Roku 3. I have had it crash once, but it's been fine other than that. GUI is snappy & Netflix/Prime videos load quickly. I haven't used a regular Fire TV for comparison, but the Stick feels just as quick as my Roku 3.

Just wish it had VUDU, then it'd be perfect!

Those who are saying that the TV has a snappy UI are weird to me.

The interface lags like crazy, half the time it's a good 2 clicks behind what I'm doing. The hulu app is the worst piece of software in the world.

NICE, thanks for the Llama link! I'll try that out this weekend!

Mine responds instantly. It's as fast as using PLEX on my HTPC. Strange, sounds like I'm in the minority here.

I watched some more stuff during the weekend and the buffering was non-existent on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, but really apparent on XBMC streaming (let's say on average of 5 second buffering every minute or so, which makes things unwatchable). I looked it up and it turns out it's a common issue with Android sticks, so I used the tips to edit XBMC's advancedsettings.xml from here, and everything was good after that. I only watched about 40 minutes or so of movies after that, but no more buffering.

Are you talking about the Stick or the original Fire TV? The original Fire TV does not lag at all, and the UI is amazingly fast and snappy. I don't have Hulu account though, so I have no idea about the app.

Personally I hated my chromecast and found that its was always better to have a remote than have to use my phone esp when it comes to simple things like pausing and resuming.

Also the firetv is a pretty new product so its codec support is pretty limited... I would be shocked if they don't release an update in the next few months to add support for atleast some of those codecs. Seems what most expect to happen on the plex forums.

Yeah, same. I never liked using my phone as a remote (wake up, slide to unlock, wait a second for the app to reconnect as a controller, send signal, go blind in the dark from looking at a bright screen, and miss part of the movie because you had to fiddle with your phone just to pause it), despite how cool it was to be able to actually do that.

I think for Christmas, I'm going to pick up the Harmony Smart Remote, which includes a dumb remote, but can be programmed for ALL your gear: (plus has a phone app as an alternative control option)

You'll love the remote, I have two of them I like it so much.

Yeah, I had a couple of the older Harmony remotes (color screen & whatnot) and honestly, I like the dumb remotes better. My favorite remote ever is the peanut-shaped Tivo remote...each button was a different shape, so you could easily & quickly location the function you wanted in the dark (like record or pause). I'd love for them to have that available as a controller option, like a universal Tivo remote. Hmm, I wonder if the Logitech Smart Control base could accept one...

That's what I am using. It is pretty good but not quite perfect. I'm still happy with it however and being able to use any WiFi device when you lose the remote is pretty sweet.

Still waiting on mine...does this thing have an official YouTube app?

One thing that pisses me off is when Amazon puts out a chart showing the Chromecast doesn't have AIV when it is them blocking that feature (buy once, play everywhere my ass...Amazons anti-competitive nature with Google has actually caused me to buy less from them, and I used to have 100-150 orders a year)

If Google actually developed an official YouTube app for this they are retarded if they didn't use that as leverage to get Chromecast AIV support.

The UPS driver just dropped mine off about 15mins ago. It's pretty cold out today so I'm letting it warm up before I mess around with it.
I'm going to try it out on an older Samsung 50" plasma that is a "dumb" tv. I purchased this with the intent to get Netflix HD streaming and Amazon Prime Video. I hope it works. Here's a couple pics.

Anyone else having buffer issues with the Netflix app? My prime video works good but Netflix is unusable...:/

EDIT:Looks like I just needed a system update. Netflix works good now.

No official YouTube app on Amazon App Store, and in fact, the dozen or so third-party clients that are available (and worked perfectly with the original Fire TV), have not been tagged to work for the Stick, and therefore won't show up on search. Well, except for one app that's pretty crappy and often crashed. It's very annoying!

I don't have any buffering issues with Netflix while watching something, but last night while browsing around shows on Netflix I got some 'network problem' and ended up getting disconnected. It actually happened 2 or 3 times. Not sure if the problem was Netflix or my network connection.

^^^I figured it out. I updated my post to reflect what the issue was. I haven't had much time to use it but hopefully I don't have the same issues you are. Especially now that I got it working.:]

Can it mirror the display from any app from an iPhone or iPad like an Apple TV? I could not find a definite answer in any of the reviews.

If you manage to install some sort of allcast software yes. But from what I have seen, I was able to cast from my Kindle Fire to the FireTV... so the Firestick should be the same really.
