So I didn't even know what it was until I received an item that it looked like it has been refurbished. I was a little bit worried there, but apparently I might have selected the frustration free packaging option.

Anyone here use the option frequently.

Doesn't it seem a bit shady? -.-

I just bought a pair of smoke alarms from Amazon and forgot to select frustration free packaging. Never again-the worst thing about installing them was getting them out of the ***** shell pack.

One of Amazon's better ideas. A return to the good old days when everything wasn't shrink wrapped (or worse).

I use it whenever possible. I just got a thumb drive using it. I'm sure the manufacturer saves money by not having to pay for packaging and in turn Amazon gets a better rate.

But what packaging does the Frustration Free Packaging come in? :hmm:

That brain-drainer aside, I've purchased several things from Amazon that came in these delightfully-easy to open boxes. Great idea. I'm sure I'm not the only one that has torn open the side of his hand on one of those hermetically-sealed, thickass-plastic blister packs.

I think one of the major con is that you don't know whether or not the product you received is a brand new or a refurbished one.

It makes it easier to trick consumers.

Please show any evidence this has happened.

I'll wait...

I thought I was cynical enough, but I'm apparently a Pollyanna compared to your depths of bitter suspicion

If you're frustrated by packaging you have bigger problems than waiting a few extra minutes to get your new inflatable love doll up and running. There are these handy-dandy newfangled inventions known as scissors, you should read up on them. They're going to change the world once word gets out.

Except with how much Amazon sells, someone would have complained and we would have heard about it so it's obviously not happening.

But then how do you open the scissors?

Seriously? I would pretty much ASSUME that this MUST be a ploy to resell opened returns.

An unopened return goes right back on store shelves. No one cries foul. An opened product is no less 'new' and will still get sold, as new, to someone, somewhere. Helpful hint: 'open box' items are displays/demos and whatnot. Not just stuff someone broke the seal on. Similar to how refurbs are clearly used items, and not the brand new returns that some deluded optimists seem to think they are receiving.

More importantly than any of this, however, is one simple question: What kind of useless dick-fingered invalid has to request that a company open his item for him?

Blister packs are not impenetrable fortresses. FFS, it's called a knife and/or scissors.

Maybe you can also select an option where Jerry Seinfeld will call you up and pander to you while you open the package. 'What is the DEAL with this thing? Who could open this? I know I can't stab plastic with a knife, either! Don't feel bad, it would clearly take a GENIUS to open this item! And I'm just a dumbass like you!'

What is frustration free packing?

I have never seen this option on Amazon and I shop there all the time. Is it US only?

(1) Think of all the waste caused by unnecessary packaging material-waste which costs YOU money as a consumer and as a taxpayer. Discounting entirely any cost of production of the packaging material and of shipping it, tipping costs (ie, dump charges) here run about $300-500/ton.

(2) The main reason for blister packs is to help foil shoplifters-totally unnecessary for e-tailers.

(3) The smoke alarms I mentioned earlier had such thick blister packs they couldn't be opened with just scissors-I also had to pull out a box cutter to make the initial slit.

It's for specific items where the manufacturer has agreed to produce an alternate packaging option. Not only are they easier to open, but they're packaged in a much less wasteful way, with easier to recycle components. In many cases, the frustration-free box is the shipping box -- the lack of an outer shipping box dramatically reduces the waste in getting it to you.

Not sure if it's US only, but here's the page that explains it, and shows the products available in this packaging:

Yeah, you've never tried to get a new childs toy out of the packaging and assembled while they are excitedly beating you over the head.

You'll need scissors, a Phillips screwdriver, some tin snips, a first aid kit, some beers and the temperament of a saint. And some brandy.

Then you have to find some batteries.

I user my Leatherman Wave's serrated blade on packaging.
