eh i guess I'm not that ancient...i just remember back when IE 3.0 came preloaded with my Win 95 PC and it wouldn't ever boot up...just had a link on the desktop that never worked...

i even used the system recovery disk compaq so kindly gave back then, but still, no go...IE3 was so broken it couldn't even run out of the box haha...

oh and netscape, what was it, 3? was the hit browser. Oh man i remember when I went to websites and saw that "cool" line across the screen and i was like WOW how did they do that?!
Hahaha...oh and remember when there was more content on AOL channels than most of the web because there weren't really any graphics-filled websites yet?

And one time I was fudging around in our school labs and me and my geek friends found a PC that had netscape 2 loaded on it and I spent quite some time trying to jam everything onto floppies just so I could have a copy of one of the oldest browsers.

Wait I think I just admitted to pirating because they CHARGED MONEY FOR NETSCAPE BACK THEN. HAHAHAHAHAH money for netscape hahahaha...heeheeheee...oh man

Man all these memories...I remember being so excited about windows 98 and it's FAT32 file system that would finally allow me to pack more text files onto my 2.5GB hard drive because of the smaller clusters. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...zip disks....hahahahahah

OK, now I feel old.

Nah, don't feel old. I think I have you slightly beat in that dept. I remember downloading the MS TCP stack upgrade for WfWg 3.11, and Mosaic, and the "Porsche of browsers" back then, Netscape 1.0 (16-bit). I actually still have it on my HD. I think I used Slipknot and Lynx before then, with my dialup shell acct. Ah, the joys of telnet. I tried Arachne for DOS too, ugh, that was a mess.

I remember the internet before the WWW... nothing but text, mainly. There were no fancy-shmancy all-singing, all-dancing IM clients, just things like "talk" and "finger". If you were lucky, you were on a VAX system with "phone", and could have multi-party online conversations. (Later on IRCII was invented.) Heck, back in my day... we had to push our TCP packets uphill, both to and from the server, by hand...

I never did actively ever use punch cards, although I know someone that did, when she worked with computers back then.

PS. That does remind me.. what did I do with my 8" floppies and my CP/M-80 source code printouts. I moved recently, and now I don't recall seeing them. Hmm. Perhaps they got thrown out before. Perhaps that was for the better. Sigh. I collect too many relics (aka "junk").

Thanks for the nostalgic way-back trip. I was ROTFL at your "guy from '96" comment above, earlier, too.
