Everyone check your Amazon gold box, this is a really really good deal. I know I shouldn't post goldbox deals, but maybe some of you might get this, so I think it's worthy of a new thread. I just got this DVD player in it with a $30 gold box coupon:

$199.99
-$30.00 gold box coupon
-$5.00 ($5 off $35 coupon)
-$30.00 (rebate link)
-----
$134.99 TOTAL shipped

A quasi-review from a thread by MaxRC at FW:
<< Background:
This DVD player is the 5-disk changer version of the DVD-RP82, which is said to be the best DVD player under $500. The DVD-CP72K/S actually retails $50 more than the DVD-RP82 and the lowest price I could find for the DVD-RP82 was $206.00 shipped. The CP72K/S has one of the best de-interlacing and MPEG decoding circuits for DVD players of this price range. Checkout some forum discussions about it on dvdtalk.com and avsforum.com.

The J&R Music product info page has some detailed specs, but the most impressive ones are:

* Progressive scan (480p) output
* 54MHz/10-bit video DAC
* 192KHz/24-bit audio DAC
* DVD-R, CD-R/W, WMA & MP3 playback
* Optical digital audio output

For those looking to experience the superior progressive scan video output on a 480P capable TV set, this is an excellent deal. Pop in 5 movies and you won't have to get up for 10+ hours. >>

Hmm, any suggestions as to how I could increase my chances of getting this in my goldbox?

Yup, I got the same. I'd rather have the 5-disc

This is an awesome DVD player. My old Apex 703 was under the Circuit City 3 year warranty and crapped out on me with 3 months left. I brought it to them to get fixed and they just gave me the credit - I ended up buying the Panasonic CP72S .

I only have S-Video for my TV for now but I swear the quality is loads better than my old Apex. Super crisp and clear.

The audio is nothing short of phenomenal - I have a A/V receiver with surround speakers and use the TOSLINK digital output from the Panasonic. WOW! Loaded up Star Wars Ep 2 and the opening scene with the ship blowing up just rolls over you. Much better sound than my old player.

The setup menu system is nice and simple, the controls are fairly intuitive and the unit itself is pretty sharp looking. Even for $200 plus the rebate (although currently $219.88 at Amazon) I think this is a great deal. I havent had a chance to check out MP3 playback, but all reviews I have seen rave about it.

Snap this up if you have a chance!

Nothing but crap in my Gold Box. I haven't gotten anything good for months. I would buy this in a heartbeat if I could get it for that price. Great deal for those that can get it.

I got the 67s too...I was looking at the specs and the 72s has these features more over the 67s

-DVD-RAM Video Playback Capability
-MPEG Digital Noise Reduction (Mosquito/Block/3D)
-Audio Only Function (Video Circuit OFF)
-Built-in DTS® Surround Sound Decoder
-Built-in Dolby Digital® Surround Sound Decoder

everything else is the same.

I rec'd the offer on the 67S also. I'm not interested in these as being a DVD drive, but looking at ot as a replacement for an aging Sony CD changer/carousel player. The ability to randomly play CDR's containing MP3 files is key consideration. Even at high encoding bit rates, that could hold 30 hours of music easily. The progressive scan feature is a nice feature but I don't have a HDTV, yet so it is strictly a future. I picked up a deal on a Samsung 621 changer which is not progressive DVD player for about the same money. According to the manual, the remote is multibrand. Haven't opened it yet so can still return. Don't believe the Panasonics are multi capable.

I'm don't feel like I know enough about these devices to make an informed decision. Would appreciate other opinions.

Mine was also the CP67S, but it seemed like a great deal for a 5 disc changing DVD/CD player with Pro Scan so I bought one.

Thanks for the headsup!

Thanks for the post...I checked all four of my Gold Boxes and I got offers for both the 67S and the 62K, but decided against both in favor of (hopefully!) getting the 72S. If someone gets this item in their gold box and doesn't want it, please private message me or post back to this thread. I'd be happy to pay for it(make sure you use the $5 off $35 coupon ).

this player is awesome, but the remote blows! But I like it enough to have 2 at my house, as I have no brand loyalty and rarely buy the same thing twice.

I have the 67s and it DOES NOT play SVCD's. I was disappointed that it didn't, but it is such a kick-ass DVD player that it is worth getting and then getting a cheap-o Apex player for SVCD's.

Rich, which model do you have...there are several under discussion.

FYI, CP72S does NOT play SVCD's either. Only minor glitch as far as I'm concerned. Oh, and the remote is indeed a load of poo. The audio-only switch is pretty nice too. Not a big-deal, but one of those little touches. Not that it matters to most people, but I THINK that you have ability to change discs while one is playing. Not entirely sure on this but thats what it looks like.

I'd be tempted to pick up another at that price for upstairs - I'll keep an eye too.

LDegrelle: it seems like I've read before that the CP72(s/k) WILL play SVCDs if you use the VCD header trick. I can't really recall where I saw that but if I stumble on it again I'll post a link here. I was seriously looking at getting one of these players a while ago (for a lot more money) and would jump on it immediately if it weren't for the fact that I get nothing but CRAP in my Goldboxes. One really cool thing it also does is play .mp3 files off of CD-R/RWs and displays an onscreen list of song file names using something like 48 or 64 characters! Most only show you 11 or 13 which just isn't enough. Maybe in another 12 hours I'll luck out and get this offer

So did anyone else actually get this player for the Gold Box price? The Amazon web page shows $219 for the regular price, not $199 as shown in the first post here. Was this an isolated Gold Box item or was it a mistake about the model by the original poster?(No offense, it's an honest question.)
