recently here at work boss ordered a camera from amazon and they gave him an invalid tracking number (package was supposed to be overnighted but hadn't come for 3 days). Every time he emailed them he got the canned responce of "go to your amazon.com track your package" page.

Looked up this number, got us on the phone with customer service, FINALLY after a couple hours got the actual tracking number and found out the package hadn't even been shipped yet.

Just an example of how this # comes in handy from time to time...

Phone banks are expensive to run, especially when they've developed such a complete online system to tell you about your order.

I wonder if Amazon has recently made their customer service number harder to find. Last year I had a problem with a gift certificate and do not remember having any problem finding the number. I can see if they have an effecient online customer service system how they would want to phase out phone lines...but sometimes it just feels better to talk to someone.

Because of idiots calling up to find out if their steak knives are ok to cut filet mignon too.

Amazon used to include the 800 number with orders and on all invoices.

It's amazing to think that some people can only count the 0-9 digits on their phone, but can't spell google.com, amazon.com phone, or buy.com phone number. They are in all the top seach results. It makes me wonder who places the order for them as they point to the items on the screen that they want to purchase.

Yeah, back in 1996 I felt really stupid for looking for the paper to see what movies are on when all the while movie listings were easily available on the internet!!

Had a problem ordering a special edition of a book from Amazon a couple of years ago. The corners were all bent in an wasn't very collectable anymore. Found the number easily, called them up. They actually sent me a replacement book with a return shipping label to send the other back. Great Customer Service.

You do realize many companies choose not to list with 800 directories right?

Amazon USED to be unlisted...perhaps that is changed.

You've obviously never had a problem with Amazon. Email takes several days to resolve. An instance where this would be helpful is when you order something, and after it's set to ship, you see it's not going to arrive until after Christmas. If the order is processing, you can't cancel it. However, if you call, they can upgrade the shipping or cancel the order for you.
