They certainly were for one 38-year-old software engineer and blogger, who happened to look up her Amazon order history a few years ago only to discover that, in 2014 alone, she had placed 177 orders and bought 427 items. "I had acquired more new things than there are days in the year!" writes "Mrs. BITA," who asked to remain anonymous, of "Bayalis Is The Answer."

The numbers get worse. From 2008, when she first started using Amazon, to 2016, she spent $41,000 on more than 1,400 items. That's 178 items a year, or about 15 a month.

"I have no idea what most of those 1,427 things are, or even where they might be," she writes. "So not only did I waste the money, I didn't even procure anything of lasting value."

I tend to buy lot of stuff from there bot not nearly that much. Most of the stuff I buy is also cheap electronic stuff like under $100 with the odd higher ticket item.

The funnest part is forgetting about orders and then I start getting all these random packages and it's like Christmas. I have a bunch of stuff that should be starting to trickle in from Ebay orders too. Not for me though so less exciting, but there is a 10kw (lol) varistor I can't wait to play with.

That isn't a per year figure for her but her approximate 8-9 year total. 4-5k in shopping per year isn't exactly that much... Even someone not well off could easily pull that if they shifted their everyday shopping to amazon to save money.

I placed 12 orders in 2016, and less than half of them were for me. Most were gifts. I probably have a couple on the work account also. I prefer using other people's credit cards when possible.

That said, I don't buy from Amazon, partly because they don't take Paypal.

I've bought probably $4000/year from ebay the last year or two. Mostly Newegg, some BestBuy, AdoramaCamera, mp3superstore, refurbforless, and some smaller vendors and individuals that I thought were worthy.

Haven't had much luck with China sellers on ebay, so now I avoid them.

That article is stupid though. Yes I spend a lot on Amazon. Not madoka levels obviously but way more than most people I'd imagine. But - It basically replaces all my other retail spending. I buy nearly everything on Amazon. They haven't captured all my grocery spending yet but I do close to zero local retail shopping.

Also for anyone who has lots of spare time at work - I highly recommend going through all your amazon purchase history. At least for me it's like a time machine on the older orders, remembering the circumstance each was placed under. Less so for the more recent stuff as they've eaten all my retail spending but it's amazing how much circumstance detail I can remember from orders placed 15 years ago.

The only thing I hate about shopping on Amazon is that it's hard for me to categorize it all. Most stores you can put in an individual category. For example, if I buy from Home Depot I can put it under Home Improvement. For Amazon, I just file them all under "Shopping" - because categorizing the transactions individually would be a huge PITA.

Seriously? She's been ordering 15 items a month for the past nine years and concludes that it's been a total waste of money?

I am in a spurt this past week. Upgrading 2 bathrooms. Been getting 2 boxes a day from Amazon. Even yesterday AND today!. Towel rods, towel holders, shower pipe and head, tub spout, tub drain, control faceplate, hand soap dispenser, waste baskets, electrical face plates. They all have to color match the new sink hardware.

$41,000 in 8 years is pretty low dollar total. That's only $5,125 a year and average of $28.80 an order. She's a lightweight.

I did 38 orders last year, which was the most in a year since I joined Amazon in 2002 though the number of orders has steadily increased each year. This year I'm on track to equal or slightly beat 38 orders by a few orders probably, or so. I don't feel like adding up dollar totals so suck an egg.
