By now most people here have heard the news on where Amazon will be splitting their new Headquarters.

All I have to ask is - Where is your god now liberals? As you continue to shun corporatitions your states continue to lobby to offer massive tax incentives for them to plant their HQ on your face. I thought you were fighting for the people and not the evil corporations?

Oh well, better give them another 10B in tax incentives to squat on your land. They can always make it up by taxing you stupid middle class earning peons instead.

What you're missing is that, unlike Wisconsin and Foxconn, New York and Virginia will actually realize a net gain from Amazon.

I'm also not a big fan of cities offering massive, taxpayer funded perks to large corporations in order to try to attract them to their cities. To me, it seems like this just starts bidding wars. I don't suppose I know enough about the details to make a really informed comment about it, although that is another issue with the process is it doesn't sound like such information has even been released to the communities in most cases.

Definitely weird to see the kind of groveling and race to the bottom nonsense to attract a multinational to your city.

Invest in the local uni and colleges, fund incubators so your city can be the home of the next Amazon or even have a thriving mid-market business scene.

This sort of inventive driven nonsense where big companies who already enjoy massive advantages get special treatment from the government remains stupid. Then again it’s not like it’s news that Andrew Cuomo is a horrible governor so I can’t say it’s that surprising.

To me the most irritating part is seeing people complain about Amazon because of its effect on housing prices. There are many reasons to be annoyed at this deal but being worried that it will cause rents to increase because of a large influx of good paying jobs is the dumbest complaint imaginable. More high earners is a good thing! Maybe instead of trying to keep good paying jobs away they should look to why housing was already expensive.

Wisconsin will spend 4.1 billion subsidizing 13k Foxconn factory wage jobs that may go to imported Chinese workers. Virginia will spend 500 million subsidizing 25k workers that will earn at least 150k each or Amazon doesn’t get the subsidy. Liberals may sell out to corporations but at least they get better deals.

I used to work in Crystal City, VA and I'm just wondering where they are going to put everything. The area is pretty old and has this weird underground walking/shopping area too. But the area is already built up with some highrises and office buildings as well as apartments. I just really wonder where they are going to put everything.

Amazon is well known to be an abusive employer of wage slaves. I'm glad they won't be polluting California with their giant headquarters. I wish Facebook and Google would GTFO of California too, both of them are pathetic and malicious businesses that don't innovate and belong in red states.

California only needs innovative companies like Tesla, AMD, and Nvidia. We don't need pathetic social media sites like Facebook or robot slave warehouses like Amazon. Hopefully New York and Virginia enjoy their newfound abundance of wage slave overseer positions.

Last I saw office vacancy in CC was running north of 20%. A lot of shit will be torn down and rebuilt. I mean it basically has to given what the area looks like now. In the end Crystal City, or "National Landing" as Amazon seems to be renaming it, just is a well located piece of dirt that they'll reshape to their needs/wants.

Gotcha. I haven't been around there in like 6 years so I assumed it would have built up more but it sounds like it's still run down and they will start from scratch.

This whole process Amazon ran was kind of questionable. The locations selected make it pretty apparent that no mid-tier city ever had a prayer. Even places like Philly and Newark which could have used this kind of investment seem to have gotten left out in the cold fairly early. It just feels unseemly and throws the incentives Amazon is getting into a not entirely favorable spotlight, especially in NYC.

I have to complement them on their site selection though. I was telling people 10 years ago that LIC would sooner or later blow up lol.

I dislike all corporate welfare, especially when it is targetted at already massive corporations that already have large advantages over their competitors.

Most of these deals depending on the middle class paying for the deals through taxes and they leave the cities and school districts strapped for cash while requiring large infrastructure improvements.

It also makes no sense to me as a country to incentivize massive new employment in areas that already have high populations and low unemployment and maxed out infrastructure.

Yea, the developer is going to renovate a couple of the old buildings for them as a stopgap until construction can catch up.

Still going to be a bleak couple of years for anyone they relocate or hire for that site though...

Just what the Nova needs - more people and traffic.

In all fairness LIC started blowing up about ten years ago, haha. Just look at the amount of new construction there over the last decade, one of the busiest places in the whole city.

LIC is just like Williamsburg, only to the part of Manhattan that sucks.

Northern Virginia is not very dense, so why not more people? Just have to build the infrastructure to help with that.

It never ceases to amaze me what people in the US consider to be overcrowded. We are one of the least dense developed countries in the world.

Well there still is the Metro (when not on fire) and it seems the VRE station will be expanded. But yea the traffic is a bear, we have work in Tysons and DC so very familiar with the headaches.
