Would it surprise me that a company would sell its own proprietary DIMM adapter? Not at all.

I mean, you have to buy a $75 Hard Drive Mount from Compaq for their crap.

Still, who knows what this thing is? heh heh

Ygreenkitty, I think you might be Amazon Public Enemy Number One.

Hopefully Amazon fills orders first come first serve. This way you should get your keychain first.

"Went from sales rank of 940 to now 5."

"Sales rank number 3 now! 44,600% increase!"

The minimum memory this computer shipped with was 16MB in one SDRAM chip. This left two of three DIMM slots empty. You have to be kidding if you think Digital would actually sell a converter to fit two memory chips in one DIMM slot. There was no reason for this. At the time this computer was manufactured, even putting in three 16MB chips, for 48MB total, was considered a very healthy memory total. Give the converter argument a rest.

More likely this is a pricing typo. Or possibly this memory is somewhat propreitary and won't work in all computers. I did look at the diagram of the SDRAM chip from the Venturis FX2 manual and it had the notches in the correct places for standard unbuffered SDRAM.

Well, I just ordered 10! I don't know what the hell I'm going to end up with, but the most I'll be out lunch at Burger King...

I can't believe the sales rank has jumped into the top 5...unbelievable!!!! I have a feeling Amazon.com is not going to be able to deliver on all of these...I question whether or not their inventory is real-time...

Thanks! Ordered me a couple of keychains. As a bonus, they may serve to function as system memory in a computer.

That would be funny if these things actually list for $.67 not $67. The price they sell them for is still the same.

89,300% increase. I still think its highly unlikely that these would actually work for most people, why would the other places sell them for 50 cents-$2 either, so its not a pricing error. If only they put the mobo for the Venturis on sale, maybe a couple bucks shipped would be nice Gonna be either a lot of happy people with old ram or a lot of keychains soon

edit: From a post at FW, one of the sites selling these gives the explanation:

SYSTEM AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
· * BASE MODELS INCLUDE 16MB OR 32MB DIMM STANDARD.
· *SINGLE-BANK DIMMS ARE AVAILABLE IN 16MB AND 64MB MODULES.
DUAL-BANK DIMMS ARE AVAILABLE IN 32MB AND 128MB MODULES.
· * THERE ARE THREE MEMORY SOCKETS: TWO THAT SUPPORT THE DUAL-BANK
DIMMS AND ONE THAT SUPPORTS THE SINGLE-BANK DIMMS.

we should all go and buy as many $.50 items that we can and then use a free amazon shipping coupon with each one. They would have to be losing at least 3-4 bucks on each one(not they are making any money in the first place anyway). I personally am not to fond of amazon and i think this would be pretty funny..

I just checked for that part number on Ingram Micro's site, and there's bad news: It's only showing 3 units in stock, and it's discontinued by the manufacturer.

I would assume that Amazon would simply drop ship an item like that memory from a distributor, and Ingram fits the bill: $67 retail, $0.61 cost. This also explains why goog40 could find this at other sites, since there are many that just transfer Ingram's database into their own. Although I have an order for 4 placed, I don't think it will ever arrive.

Trying to make Amazon lose money just for the hell of it is an idiotic idea. All that does is increase prices on the other stuff. Use your head.

Just noticed Amazon changed the price to $58! Yes, Dollars.

I guess when the item went to #1 in the sales ranking it got their attention.

Chances are whoever was working at Amazon tonight doesn't know what this item is and freaked out assuming that this was a pricing error because of the huge sales. But it's really not because other sites have this item at $2.00 or less.

I still don't know for sure, but SimMike2's description seems most likely as to what these are. Didn't want to be greedy and blow the deal, so at 5:45 p.m. I hit every site I could find this for less than $2(at that time not knowing what the heck these were) for a few here; a few there. The in-stock numbers at a couple of places would suggest one source (probably Ingram Micro)with the magic number being three. I'm guessing Amazon's weekend crew panicked as this went up the chart, assumed missplaced decimal point and changed it based on assumption only, because these are all over the web for $0.58 to $2.00. I'm either going to have a lot of 32mb memory or a lot of keychains.

i think making amazon lose money is a great idea
1) they never have any good deals (on purpose)
2) if there seems to be a good deal they cancel it after they've charged you cc
3) they claim your private info is theirs to keep/sell
4) they are the MOST expensive store i've seen as far as any deals go
I am not one to hate "big and bad" companies. i love corporate america. Love egghead, buy.com, etc. but amazon just sucks

The reason it's around the same price at various stores is probably due to the fact that most of them set their price by whatever the distributor is charging + percentage of profit for their own operating costs, etc.. if Ingram Micro mispriced the part, it would automatically show up mispriced at any site that uses Ingram as their database source for that particular item. I've noticed it happen a few times with other items in the past, but they were usually all out of stock when it occured. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

In answer to the "Free Shipping" question, Amazon has automatic free shipping in Electronics, Cameras on all items and over $100 purchase in Kitchen this month.

To the person who wants to 'screw' Amazon. Your reasoning is biased. Just because they have cancelled orders of yours doesn't mean they cancel all orders. Most everybody has lost some of the orders they placed as Amazon has run out of stock in items.

Lots of stores sell our info--if you don't want it out there use a web certificate.

Like any place else, they are expensive on some things and a bargain on others...do your homework. We could make a huge thread just listing the bargains we have received, and everyone has some if they have been ordering in the last couple of weeks. I have passed on a number of items that looked good at first glance and were last years news. Some of my things have come very dusty, so they are cleaning out warehouses somewhere.

I know they are losing a bundle on shipping. There is no way they can make money when someone order 80 bungee cords at $.08 each (me) and they ship them in 8 different boxes!! UPS Priority no less. You don't have to play games, they are doing it to themselves and I have the empty boxes to prove it. Even when I go back and combine orders to "save on shipping", they still send everything in bits and pieces.

I have a small theory as to some of the cancellations. Amazon seems to have a good handle on some of their stock, ie items slipping out of the basket in mid-order. On other things, you can order as many as you want for days and then it may take days for your order to be cancelled. It could be that some items are done as speculation by them and once they get a large amount of orders, they group them and order the lot all at once from whatever supplier they have contracted with. That might explain why these later cancellations don't come in first in/first out order. My example being when I order the $.98 baskets ($13 at Walmart), I placed three orders and it took them a week to ship. They cancelled my first and third order and sent the one I place in the middle.

whew, my fingers are tired. Too much Drambui last night...

Since it appears this was a pricing error (price is now $58, not 58 cents), Amazon doesn't have to honor the price. This is clearly stated in Amazon policies.

Some people still think this isn't an SDRAM module because it is listed as "kit" and "upgrade." Keep in mind that many companies sold memory in "kits", which consisted of the memory and a folded over piece of paper with instructions on how to install memory. This constituted an upgrade kit.
