You cannot gift it at the discounted price. I contacted CS to ask.

Initial Question: I currently have Amazon Prime. I hear that today Amazon Prime is available for purchase at the discounted price of $73. I would like to take advantage of that to purchase Prime as a gift for someone. How do I do that? It is appearing in my cart at regular price.

10:39 AM PST Jason(Amazon): Hello, my name is Jason. I'll be happy to help you. Thank you for contacting Amazon.com.
Hi! I am so sorry to hear that, Kevin! I will be happy to take a look!
10:40 AM PST Jason: Well the reason it is not working is because it does not start until tomorrow.
10:40 AM PST XXXXXXXXXX: LOL Whoops!
10:40 AM PST Jason: Also - gifting Prime is not eligible for the promotion.
10:41 AM PST XXXXXXXXXX: Boooo!
10:41 AM PST Jason: According to the information I have right now.
10:41 AM PST XXXXXXXXXX: So I will have to tell him to buy it and I will re-imburse hime
him
10:41 AM PST Jason: Yes.
10:41 AM PST XXXXXXXXXX: ok that's cool thanks for the info
10:41 AM PST Jason: My pleasure!
10:41 AM PST XXXXXXXXXX: have a good day.
10:42 AM PST Jason: You as well! Thank you!

Good timing! I gave the 30-day trial period a good run for the money over the just-past holiday season but didn't sign up for the full year when it expired last week. At $73, I'll probably give it a longer shot to see just how much I end up using it when I'm not buying more "stuff" than usual. I didn't think it would seem like such a big deal, but I have to admit it didn't take long to get used to the 2-day/next day/same day shipping...

Wonder if Amazon has considered the Costco model. Selling things at almost at cost and making a profit through Prime membership.

Wuuuh? I pay ~$105 for my annual at Costco and every year a few months before it ends they send me a check for more than that as cash back on purchases. And in spite of buying less and less there over time I have yet to get less back than my annual renewal. It would still be worth it as long as I don't reach break-even on the lower tier membership that has no cash back.

Customer service gives all the info necessary to make this decision and points out that the vast majority of members make money off the deal.

So what is it you think the Costco model is?

If that's really Costco's business model, they must rely heavily on most (or at least very many) members not using their shopping "privileges" very much, and having higher online than in-store prices, or at least limited inventory available on-line? (Otherwise it just doesn't make any rational sense.) Since Amazon's entire presence is online, they couldn't do something like that and it's a lot easier to shop online than drag your butt to a brick & mortar store. I guess they could achieve a similar result by charging a (much) higher fee, but I really can't imagine many, if anyone, would be willing to pay a fee high enough to balance out those other factors.

Like Amazon but since they started taxing here, I have used them far less, also how in the world is a purchase of Amazon prime taxed? To me that should be tax free.

It's a service. Taxes aren't on just things but on the transaction itself.

Now that they push prime so hard, you can tell they purposely hold back shipping. What used to process same day or within a day or 2, now takes 3 days minimum. I won't be contributing.

The word is out about you... ordering one peanut at a time instead of the full packet. That's why they make you wait 3 days. It's all about the peanuts.

Completely. My first order after letting my Prime expire, said it would deliver in 5-8 days with the free shipping, I thought "eh, it's early enough in the day, it will ship either this afternoon or tomorrow". Well it didn't ship until 4 days later, just so it would arrive on day 7 after ordering.....Like they intentionally held it back to spite me back into ordering Prime.
