I will cancel at the end of my current subscription, which is in July, just to do a temperature check on myself. Probably will join back promptly after that, who knows.. but will definitely take a break.

It's worth it so my kids can stream Oomie Zoomie, Fireman Sam and Dora...and it's still only $49 for me

I weened myself off amazon prime some time ago.
Mainly because with prime I felt like a drug addict ordering stuff all the time.
The UPS guy must have thought I won a lottery, or was some kind of hoarder.
So I did not renew and broke the habit, well mostly.
I still order a lot but wait until I have enough items to qualify for free shipping.
And I've learned how to be an adult and be patient.
Not expecting everything delivered RIGHT AWAY.
Plus, as a prime member I often opted for the next day or saturday delivery, which still costs extra under prime. And if you order, say, 3 items thats not just one hit of $3.99 but three hits of $3.99 for next day. Per item charge.
And as far as their video streaming feature, I have netflix and Hulu and vudo and, well there are just so many out there. Amazon wasn't necessary.
Added to that, amazon only allowed limited users to stream at one time, where netflix I can have several streaming at one time. That was a deal breaker for me and amazon streaming.

With prime I felt I had to order this and that and this and that.
Now Im clean and sober. Well, almost. Not quite but almost.

Nah man you gotta work the system.

Order 1 item with the $3.99 shipping. Then make a separate order for the rest with the free 2-day shipping. A lot of the times they'll bunch everything into the overnight box.

Hmm, so there is a downside to online ordering. I just had an order with a few things arrive today. It was missing an item. It was a PAIN to track down the help page to actually talk to somebody. Once I finally got ahold of them, they said it was both a third-party seller and an add-on item (it was $10), so they couldn't replace it, only refund it. They could re-order it for me, but I'd have to buy at least $35 worth of stuff to qualify for them to ship it free. What the heck??

So to me, that's pretty crappy - I was waiting on this item (a food item), it didn't show up, and now they say I have to buy another $35 worth of stuff to get it. Lame. THEY screwed up and THEY should make it right. Stuff like this rarely happens with Amazon, but still...c'mon.

Even with the increase it is a good deal. I finally started a prime share this year, I should have done that long ago. That is a good way to get prime much cheaper. If you dont know you can sell four spots on your account to "relatives". They dont get access to the other Prime perks but do get two day shipping

I've had prime for years and years, I order easily 5-10 items or more in a month for either myself, friends, or family. $20 more is nothing, and it's still got instant streaming which is comparable to netflix (at $96 a year JUST for netflix).

I just joined for the first time last year. Not sure if it makes sense for me considering I never buy more than 20 items for the whole year. Never spend more than $800.00 US for the whole year as well.

Amazon Prime streaming does not work for me as well because I am not in the US region

Comparable how? In quality maybe but certainly not selection. Not close.

The price does seem fair for the service but I will be canceling anyway. Prime offered fast shipping on things I almost never really needed quickly. It was simply a convenience/luxury. I can learn to plan a bit better and deal with longer delivery times.

As business, it is probably a good move by Amazon. I am sure most people will pay the increase without hesitation.

You know what? I agree with you 100 percent!

I don't spend a lot of money or order enough items for the year to be worth it. I have to learn to plan ahead with my orders. Like I said, I cannot even watch the prime videos anyway. I will cancel my membership as well.

Seriously? I watch more on prime now than netflix because they got rid of Avatar the last air bender and stargate, amazon still has them. The selection on prime has steadily improved, the only thing netflix has really are the netflix exclusives and a few more movies, but for the most part the selection is very similar on amazon, and better in more than a few areas.

I am. I am also an impatient bastard. $8.50/month for free 2 day shipping? One item would cost $20 for 2 day shipping at most places.

Even better, when I need something in a big hurry, I can upgrade to overnight (or sometimes local express) for $4. I ordered something on a Sunday evening recently, and had it in my hands less than 24 hours later. I love it!

I just got an email confirming that when my prime renews is July the rate is increasing from $79 to $99.
My rate increases in July 2014. So check your renewal dates!

I shop on amazon a lot so I feel like the discounted prices I get probably even out the membership fee.
I will probably still come out ahead but not sure. Its probably still worth it but it pizses me off.

I wish I could do that, but a good amount of the stuff I buy is only sold through third parties and is also cheaper to buy through Amazon (usually due to shipping) than the manufacturer or distributor's site

I was too cheap to spend the $5 on overnighting a battery to me. They went ahead and overnighted it anyway. Thx AMZ!

I still have 9 months until my renewal so I'm debating if I will. I buy a ton from amazon and use subscribe and save but they just started collecting sales tax for purchases in NC last month. Also there are a few items I was saving a ton on with subscribe and save they stopped offering through s&s so it's getting less and less attractive.

I'm good until Dec, and really don't know what I'll do. I only looked at their video service once, and I've had prime for years. I get hit with tax because they have a center in the state now. I heard they are building another, so would the free shipping be so bad then?

Here's a complaint about Amazon prime. Yesterday I ordered a weight bench from amazon using 2 day shipping. The listing had one of those timers on it that said "order in the next 2 hours and X minutes to receive this item by Friday with free 2 day shipping". I'm not sure about the minutes, but it was definitely over 2 hours for Friday delivery when I ordered. So I get an email today saying the item has shipped and my guaranteed delivery date is Monday. That kinda sucks because I was looking forward to using the bench this weekend. I definitely would have gotten next day shipping if I knew this was going to happen. Is this something I should call them and bitch about?

Edit: Ok so I talked to someone in customer service and they gave me $10 off my next purchase. That's not so bad then.

One thing I like too is that they have Burays on sale all the time for a short period. Sometimes very popular new releases for like $5. You have to jump on it before it's gone. If you don't have prime you have to pay shipping, if you don't already have $30 or so in your cart for normal free shipping you'll miss the deal if you add it to your wishlist until you have enough for free shipping. I'm actually getting a pretty decent little movie library going on just $5 blurays.

They no longer have $4 overnight. It depends on the item. I was going to have a couple ball valves overnighted and they wanted $50+.

http://www.bls.gov/data/Inflation_Calculator.htm

According to that, $79 in 2005 is equivalent to $94.62 today.

Armed rebellion time?

I'd love a Prime Lite if it meant a discount, that doesn't have their lousy streaming service. Streaming might be decent, if the quality wasn't like a 480p Youtube video, and if it didn't lose the stream about 20-25 minutes into most videos, requiring a Ctrl+F5 reload of the entire page. And some of their videos weren't even deinterlaced. Freeware video editors can deal with that; the studios probably just didn't care.

Though I might go back to regular Prime if they'd offer music in FLAC format. I am quite appreciative MP3s that aren't saddled up with DRM BS.

An extra $20 a year compered to how much everything else has increased in price over the years seems reasonable. I'll be keeping my Prime membership when it's time to renew.
Ditto.

You are mistaken. You probably tried to overnight a non-prime item. It's always been this way.
